You went from meeting with the investigator on April 8th to getting on the register exactly three weeks later! That has to be the fastest clearance processing I've ever heard of!!!! fml hah, I'm still waiting three months now and I have a current clearance... Congrats on the placement, sounds like a sure thing with that rank.

From the "Be careful what you wish for department"... I've occasionally thought that I wouldn't mind getting medevaced to Singapore and getting out of China for a weekend, as long as it wasn't serious. I never hoped to do it because of my daughter though. It kind of sucks that her first Spring Break is being spent in a Chinese hospital.

Sorry to hear that, man. Serious health issues overseas can be terrifying, depending on the location. Hope everything gets better very soon.

1of7 posted:From the "Be careful what you wish for department"... Sending good vibes your way for your daughter and your family. Medevacs for serious problems are never fun. I had 30 minutes to pack for myself and my wife on her medevac to London - otherwise we were getting the air ambulance. Calling parents while we were on the ground in Kampala sucked. "Mom, Dad, don't freak out but our R&R plans changed. We're not going to Rome, we're going to a neurology hospital in London…". On the plus side, the mother-in-law loves me on how I handled it, so, upsides right? TCD fucked around with this message at 13:09 on Apr 30, 2013 |

Thanks for all the good wishes. She's already feeling a lot better (if not, I probably would be to worried to be posting about it). We know what the main problem is and it isn't too bad. The medevac is more of a follow up based on some of the test results that were a little concerning. Just need to rule out any serious issues there though we think it's probably a side effect of the main issue.

Getting involved with heath care systems overseas can be quite the cultural experience. For instance, who knew that Israeli hospitals are run by Russian nurses? All hired, evidently, by Joe Stalin. "Patients who want to eat will line up. You have 5 minutes. Patients who do not want to eat will not later complain about being hungry. You! In the red robe! Line up with the others! Blue robe man! Put slippers on your feet or go hungry!" No, I'm not kidding. Great trauma care. Great doctors. Nurses from the first circle of a gulag hell.

Everything went as it should, and MED worked with me and my wife through the entire process. Well, I ended up losing a R&R, but, I wasn't left with enough time (or leave) to use it anyways. 1o7, you have my info if you want to discuss anything. Hello everyone, It's been a long long time since I was in the SAForums but I had a great time here way back in the day, must have been over 10 years ago, easy. I'm back now almost solely for this thread. A friend recently relinked me to it and I remember reading it a long time ago, must have been before I took the test. I took the FSOT in Oct 2009 and hit the register in August 2010. Got my invite as a PolOff on Dec 28 and A-100 started at the end of March, 2011. I'm exactly 2 months from finishing my first tour, a CONS-ECON tour in Abuja. I'm checking in here to say hello to the other FSOs here and throw my hat into the ring as a resource for those who are interested in the FS. Cheers, all. Oh yeah, most people abbreviate my name as "Nute", if that matters. It's an old persona that I haven't really worn outside of ArsTechnica in a long time.

Did you do the survey after the fact? And write to the head of MED/FP? I found both were the only way to give feedback where it was due. That, and to ensure that the folks who went above and beyond got some gratitude. Believe me, I can sympathize with you.

1of7 - man, think of it positively... you're getting out earlier? (maybe). You have my well wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery. (Singapore has great healthcare, apparently, so it's one less thing to worry about) My experience with MED is they never want to put anything in writing, and when they do, they hardly want to back it up for some reason. But they will if you push an issue, because they put it in writing.

When MED fucks up, they tend to do it in a spectacular fashion. They royally gave the shaft to one of our DEA colleagues at post, but thankfully he is landing on his feet thanks to DEA giving him a soft landing homeward.

I know I've had some difficulties getting reimbursed from Med for my medical exams (it finally got worked out), but is MED really that bad? Or is it more of when the opportunity to spectacularly gently caress up arises, they take the ball and run with it?

MED and DS can REALLY make a difference in your career and assignments. Okay, GSO fucks up, you can't find your stuff for 2-3 weeks more. Worst case, it's an insurance claim. However, your health and suitability are things that make major personal impacts on either you or your family. Again, I haven't had a bad MED experience, but, when they go bad, they seem to go bad in a really big way.

I guess reading all of the, lack of a better term (or maybe I'm over-exaggerating) "horror stories" about MED, I'm having a "holy crap am I making the right move here!" moment, or is it just a few cases. It's just something to keep in the back of your head - i.e things can go wrong, so try to prevent them. Not that they WILL happen to you, it's just that a Situation A, with a fuckup can lead to Outcomes Y, Z that are not favorable. MOST of the experiences I have heard were generally positive; in DS case most of the DS (Hell, FSO) I have met are very competent at their jobs. But there's always one or two exceptions; thats where the horror stories come in. And like a bad cold, when they get around, they really get around. Basically, take nothing for granted. And don't be a dick, because also like an IMS, those people too have the power to ruin your day in ways you never thought possible. Seriously. You won't win every battle, so sometimes you got to learn how far you're willing to push things.

I have had no problems with Med so far & have been pleased with them so far. But, it is somewhat scary that whoever is medevaced loses their Med clearance & has to be recleared at the end. As it is, we are waiting until Monday for test results to see what the RMO says. Looks like my girl will be dropping to class 2. We will likely either have to send her to the US to live with my parents or curtail. Plus, it may affect my assignment to Suva, so I may not even know where I would be curtailing to. Basically, I won't have any idea about anything until Monday & we will be completely stressing over the endless possibilities until then. I am grateful that she is essentially healthy & the issues she has is a fairly minor one.

Soooo I left Libya today. Due to flight schedules, I'm overnighting in Frankfurt before arriving home on Saturday. I just had a meal that consisted of beer, pork, wine, and potatoes, all the while watching the Cubs getting their asses handed to them on ESPN America (which apparently exists). I feel like I'm home already.
