I don't think this is quite the "gay sex" vs. "straight sex" some people are making it out to be. What was banned is literally in image someone holding a cock and blowing it. (First two pages here: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=preview&id=16005 ) Marko and Alana's page of them having sex didn't show explicit parts (I'm not including breasts as explicit). I can't remember exactly what was shown on sextillion and if it was anything beyond nudity or 'softcore' depictions of sex. This seems to me like a "softcore porn" stuff is okay, and "hardcore porn" stuff isn't - at least as far is Apple is concerned.

It's not really censorship. As content providers there aren't really any measures to ensure adult content is only being sold to adults on the App store, beyond a one time credit card activation - and even then, a 12 year old kid could buy an Apple card from the store. It just feels like a bunch of lawyers are making this call to protect their butts. If Apple really was trying to 'censor' this, don't you think they would have blocked the web download workaround that was posted immediately? I can understand where the decision is coming from.

I think the real outrage is that we have to wait until August for #13.

Never bring a duck to a cock fight.
No one should ever buy their comics from within the iPad or iPhone app because (I believe) Apple gets a cut from every sale on their devices. All that money should be going to Comixology and the publishers, not friggin Apple. I say this as someone who owns two iPhones, an iPad, an AppleTV and a Mac.

Apple are stupid backwards morons for being opposed to adult material and it's unfair to a lot of creators who want to sell their stuff through one of the biggest avenues of distribution available. This just happens to make them look homophobic, too.

This is an absolutely piss weak defense of censorship. I cannot explain how happy I am that Brian K Vaughn is not rolling over for Apple.

Hopefully, what will happen is that Apple will see that they look like a bunch of homophobic pieces of poo poo and allow Comixology to publish Saga #12, which is exactly what happened before when some dudes were adapting Ulysses by James Joyce into comics form. Apple pulled some similar poo poo on a Eurocomics publisher and a few manga publishers, but since nobody cared about them I'm pretty sure they're still censored.

And you know the best part? There's a thread over in Ask/Tell>Business, Finance and Careers about writing erotica to make money. That thread has inspired hundreds of erotic stories, many of which have been published through to the iTunes store directly, not in any third-party app like Comixology or anything. Each one of these stories has graphic depictions of sex an order of magnitude more graphic and explicit than anything BKV would bother putting in Saga. Ohhh ohh, but it's text so it's TOOOOTALLY different. Except that it's also intentionally lewd, lascivious and each of those stories is outright pornographic. It took me five seconds to find one of my own stories about gay werewolves having buttsex. Apple doesn't ban that stuff, but for some reason comics featuring gay sex get the banhammer.

Question: how come Saga has 12 issues and is already slated for a Volume 2 paperback in July, while Prophet is up to 14 issues and there's no sign of a Volume 2 yet? Is it a sales thing? I ask this as someone who almost exclusively buys in paperback rather than month to month.

Yeah, fair enough, it does make Apple look really inconsistent on this, although Apple still doesn't strike me as doing this from a place of homophobia - but that's just my personal opinion. Apple recently ordered a French company to remove comics that were considered pornographic, but didn't define exactly what that meant so the company removed pretty much anything with nudity.

I'm not defending Apple's actions, but they can do whatever they want with their platform. I do feel like this situation is in a state of flux and that they've been thrust into the position of being content providers for several different types of media that all come with different issues. It's easy for a retailer to filter who they sell an issue of Saga or SEX to, but there's nothing like that on the App store or Comixology yet.

This policy is pretty standard for a lot of big corporations, eBay makes you enter a credit card to view "adult material" auctions. Comixology and Apple could put something like that in place. It is pretty funny when there countless twitter accounts that post porn and there's nothing stopping anyone from opening Safari and viewing endless porn.

Kiss the Joycon to Kiss Zelda

Apple don't like pictures of genitalia being available through their apps. It's the same with apps like Grindr etc, people can't use explicit pictures on their profile because it violates Apple's TOS. I don't think it's a selective thing, I doubt that they have people who can comb through every single item of content that's available through iTunes, or through App Store apps. On a certain website, it was mentioned that they had taken down those sexually explicit French comics, and how, until now, Saga had escaped a similar fate, despite having stuff like that as early as #1. It's possible that the guy who runs that certain website clued them in as to what other comics were sexually explicit.

I'm pretty sure it's less to do with the fact that it's comic book characters partaking in disgusting gay acts (I'm pretty sure Apple doesn't want to alienate or drive away or piss off 90% of their customers, who tend to be quite vocal about this stuff), and more to do with the fact that they don't want parents suing them because they bought Little Johnny an iPad because it's easier than actually raising your child, and look at the filth he was able to download onto it.

Trades don't have set number of issues in them and trade departments can be weird but I would presume that Prophets arc hasn't ended yet so there's no point putting out a trade which is only 80% of an arc.

Prophet is a weird case though since the first TPB only included one of the short stories in it.

Luckily it's easy enough to work around for those of us who read Saga digitally.

Yeah, as stupid a decision as this is, it's really hard to make a claim that it's coming from homophobia, even though it can seem that way. As noted, the CEO is gay, the company donated to anti-Prop 8 groups, and have long extended benefits to the partners of gay employees.

As far as Saga #12 goes, I think it's worth mentioning that it is indeed available in the iTunes book store. BKV was wrong in his assessment of Apple "sometimes letting" more explicit content available there. The bookstore is not curated like the App Store is, so you can publish whatever you like there. They mention it fairly frequently when something gets pulled from the App Store for explicit or political or offensive content, they feel that sort of content belongs in the iTunes book store and not the App Store.

Apple's content management is as pointless as Nintendo. Everyone else requires age verification to access adult content, Apple would rather not have it at all or push it to some dark corner.

You know, I try not to rush to judgment but I think I'm just gonna drop Sex. Casey's had two issues now to do anything at all to truly grab me for the long term, but it's just amounted to a half-baked Batman elseworld with genitals. And for as much controversy as the sexual stuff has surrounding it, it's quite dull and inconsequential when all is said and done. Actually, that sums up the series for me thus far: dull and inconsequential.

Thanks for the review. I was thinking I was going to give it one more issue, but I don't think I'll even be doing that now. From a bunch of series that I've been reading I get the sense that the writer is so caught up in telling a big story arc that they're forgetting that they need to make each issue compelling on its own. One of the things I love about Saga is that its really nailing both.

Looks like they're backing away their position against Saga #12:

quote:

To our customers -

In the last 24 hours there has been a lot of chatter about Apple banning Saga #12 from our Comics App on the Apple App Store due to depictions of gay sex. This is simply not true, and we’d like to clarify.

As a partner of Apple, we have an obligation to respect its policies for apps and the books offered in apps. Based on our understanding of those policies, we believed that Saga #12 could not be made available in our app, and so we did not release it today.

We did not interpret the content in question as involving any particular sexual orientation, and frankly that would have been a completely irrelevant consideration under any circumstance.

Given this, it should be clear that Apple did not reject Saga #12.

After hearing from Apple this morning, we can say that our interpretation of its policies was mistaken. You’ll be glad to know that Saga #12 will be available on our App Store app soon.

We apologize to Saga creator Brian K. Vaughan and Image Comics for any confusion this may have caused.

All the best,

David Steinberger
CEO and co-founder
comiXology

And here's Vaughn view on it, and his mistakes about what was happening:

quote:

UPDATE: In light of the news, Brian K. Vaughan released the following statement:

I wanted to apologize to everyone for this entire SAGA #12 kerfuffle. Yesterday, I was mistakenly led to believe that this issue was solely with Apple, but it's now clear that it was only ever Comixology too conservatively interpreting Apple's rules. I'm truly sorry. I never thought either company was being homophobic, only weirdly inconsistent about what kind of adult material was permissible. I'm grateful that the situation was cleared up so quickly, and I'm delighted I can go back to reading smutty comics on my Retina Display iPad.

Just finished reading Star Wars: Legacy. It was pretty much everything I wanted out of an EU story. I loved the characters, the art was fantastic (Duursema's consistently incredible), and Ostrander always manages to write dialogue that is never awkward, like in some other Star Wars comics (I'm looking at you, Tales of the Jedi).

That said, the wrap-up, War, felt a bit rushed. All the loose-ends were tied up neatly, but they could have drawn it out for maybe another 3-4 issues to let it breath a little bit. Why exactly was the series cancelled after 50 issues, anyway? It was great, and I'd heard it sold well. Doesn't seem to make any sense.

So Old Man Logan was the last Millar book I checked in on and I figured Frank Quitely was a good as reason as any to check it out. I quite enjoyed the Authority, Old Man Logan and Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, but other times (Wanted, Kick rear end, Civil War) Millar has left me a little sour.

Jupiter's Legacy was pretty mellow, I think was the word I have been searching for, considering what I was expecting. The fact that there is more world building than punching and one-liners is something I enjoyed.

I didn't really feel like I wasted 3 dollars (Quitely art is always worth at least that) and I'll check it out next month, too.

My local shop had a table set up for two local guys who are starting their own comic. It's called Cowboy Mummy. I picked up what served as the first issue and all their shorts today because it's supporting a local guy and why not. All of the stuff they've put out is available free on their website. It's not too terrible. You can definitely tell that it's a beginner work. The dialogue isn't bad but I feel it needs some work and the art isn't bad but could probably use some refining. It kind of feels like he's trying to channel Atomic Robo with it and falling just a little short. Figured I'd post it here because why not.

He's a Suicide Squad fanboy, and Copra is his homage to John Ostrander's classic late '80s run -- very familiar characters but changed just enough to not infringe on DC's intellectual properties. Is it any good, though? A TPB with the first three ultra-rare issues just became available.
