I want some more goddamn gun pornography in my life. I want tons of detailed guns and many opportunities to paint and customize and stick stupid tactical doodads on them. Also targets to shoot at. Preferably in single-player. I'd play MGS 4 or Peace Walker, but I'm a PC dopewad. I've also all but worn out Jagged Alliance 2 v1.13, R6: Vegas series and most Call of Duty titles. Did they ever fix Future Soldier's PC port?

SiN Episodes: Emergence is an ok but easily forgettable single-player fps released in 2006. I've kept it installed on my computer ever since release purely because of its "arena" mode, which is like the fps equivalent of peggle or microsoft solitaire in that it is a stupidly simple and addictive means of keeping my eyes occupied while drunkenly listening to a podcast or something. Basically you pick a difficulty level at the start and are placed in an open map where enemies constantly spawn. The difficulty of the enemies is periodically increased or decreased depending on how well you are doing. If you die once it's a game over. That is more or less it. Anyone know of any games which offer a similar mode? I've already tried Max Payne 2's "Dead Man Walking" mode but I keep coming back to sin because the headshots and bunnyhopping are really satisfying and I like the way it dynamically changes the difficulty.

I'm looking for PC multi-player games for small LAN-party / lunch break play. We've been playing Quake 3 Arena for a while and we're looking for something relatively new (like released within the last 10 years). The major requirements are: - 3 to 5 human players (bot play is acceptable, as long as the bots aren't horrible) - 5 to 10 minute rounds. 20 minute rounds would be OK if people can hop in and out as needed. - The game is free or cheap. I already have extra copies of: Lead and Gold, Section 8: Prejudice, Red Faction: Armageddon, and Company of Heroes, but I haven't tried multi-player in any of them.

As the University simester closes, my friends and I are looking for some summer games to get into that have a healthy length to it. I've been looking around the 4x genre and other sim games. I personally plan to try to get everyone into Neverwinter Nights 2 on the hardest difficulty for better or worse, possibly someone blowing up someone else with a fireball, resulting in an all out murderfest until we have to reload a save, but I digress. Anyone else have any recommendations in the same vein or other outstanding suggestions?

Is there a good sim/strategy/management game I can get on my iPhone? It seems like so many of the "strategy" games on the App Store are basically variations on that same style of "build a thing, wait 3 minutes, build another thing, wait 10 minutes, but premium currency to speed up building!" Game. You end up just building things in a set order so there's really very little player involvement at all. I want something more along the lines of a Sim City or Transport Tycoon, where you actually have to think about what you're doing (it doesn't actually have to be a game where you build stuff - just something that requires actual thought and has deep systems). Ideally it's something not driven by IAP either. I don't mind the presence of IAP, just as long as it's not the kind of thing where you have to wait an hour of real-time to build things if you don't use it. I'm perfectly happy to pay for a game up front; I just don't want a game where I have to keep paying just to make things normal. I have King of Dragon Pass which is a great game, but I haven't really had much luck otherwise. The Kairosoft games are fun too, but I'm looking for something a bit deeper than them now. I'm looking for something really immersive and time-consuming to get into now that I have a lot of free time this summer, either via a really interesting and atmospheric setting (E.g. The Witcher 2, Planescape, Baldur's Gate, Dark Souls) or through gameplay that basically acts as its own story and makes you really feel like a part of the world or like you are the character you are controlling (Mount & Blade: Warband would probably be my prime example for that). PC games are preferable. Any genre is fine, though I do tend to favor RPGs, action-adventure, and strategy games.

So just in case you somehow haven't played it, it should probably be your first choice. And seconding The Walking Dead, it's only about 10-15 hours long for the full five episodes, but you'll be enjoying (almost) every minute of it. It brings you into the story and makes you care about the characters in a way that's rare, even for adventure games.

Anyone can recommend a game where you feel that you have accomplished something? Beating the big bad or completing the storyline doesn't count. I'd like a very strong sense of character progression. Probably needs to be quite sandbox-y. Terraria, Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress and their ilk, while fun, don't give me that "I'm on the top of the world" vibe, because you're building relatively small stuff. Same with city builders (Anno, SimCity, Rome and spin-offs, etc...) I guess the best example of what I mean would be something like the X series, where you go from a single spaceship to owning half of the galaxy.

I'm looking for a game recommendation for something that is basically World of Warcraft's battlegrounds, but a separate game. Why am I not playing WoW? I played WoW for a long time and quit after playing the Cataclysm expansion. I ended up quitting because I wanted to play a different class in BGs, as the one I was playing had lost it's pizzazz, and I just couldn't bring myself to do the 1-85 grind again just to play a class in BGs that I wasn't even sure I was going to like. While I liked the PvE stuff for a long time, I eventually got to the point where I felt like I had done everything in the PvE game several times and didn't feel like grinding another character up the level chain solely to get to the game I wanted to play. What other games have I tried? I have been playing Guild Wars 2 for a while and the PvP there just didn't quite what I'm looking for. The WvWvW reminds me of those ancient Alterac Valley games that raged forever, too long and eventually it just feels like a slog with no end. The hot-join PvP was better, but it felt like it was missing something vital that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Fun as a diversion from the main game, but not enough to keep playing just for that. I also always loved playing a pure healing class and Guild Wars 2 does not have that, and I've found the support-heavy options I've tried to be lackluster. I tried League of Legends and didn't care for the concept of changing champions around in response to what the other team picks, since from what I could tell, a player could be asked to switch around roles at the drop of a hat. I don't enjoy melee roles as a general rule, and I tend to find a role I enjoy and want to stick with it. Also, the lack of different game modes really turned me off, but the biggest issue I had is that the mechanism of controlling the champion was fundamentally off for me. I had a huge problem adapting to the control scheme and, even after going through the tutorials and a bunch of games against bots, I found myself fundamentally disliking how the control works. MOBA games just feel too much like an RTS for me to enjoy them. I'm not sure it even exists, but I though that if it did, someone here could point me to it. If nothing exists that is better than WoW in this regard, I may go back to that, but given that I would need to play through the PvE content to get a character to max level, I was hoping something existed that would just let me play. Thoughts?

I'm looking for some zelda-type games or just some more rpgs in general I can get for my PS3 or through Steam. I already own Okami (although I want to pick up the PS3 version sometime with the Move) and I've tried the first Infamous, although I didn't enjoy it so much that I actually ended up returning it. I've also picked up Demons/Dark Souls already as well as Nier and Just Cause 2, just to give examples in case it might help suggest other stuff I might enjoy. e: Metroidy stuff is fair game too. Just nothing turn-based unless it's really good.

You were right about what darker and edgier means. It definitely has a hokey 90s comics/Spawn sort of look and vibe to it. I also felt that the puzzles were too easy. However, it does successfully pull off a Zelda structure, but with game play that's a sort of pastiche of other games, especially God of War. It works, though. I haven't been able to get into the sequel, however.

I'd just gotten close to the end of Far Cry 3 and bought Blood Dragon as well. Some of the most fun I've had playing FPS games in recent years comes from an absolutely brilliant and very well-made mod for Doom 2 called Stronghold: On the Edge of Chaos. It's basically Doom 2: the Tower Defense game, but way better than that sounds. You start off in a really elaborate mission hub with NPCs and merchants and cool stuff to look at and everything, and each mission group you complete unlocks the next area of the hub until the whole hub is unlocked. Each level spawns enemies in huge waves, and you have a ton of tools at your disposal to deal with them, namely a ton of new weapons, powerups, deployable turrets, and deployable NPC doom marine buddies. I really can't say enough about just how good this mod is, other than it's without a doubt the best Doom experience I've ever had. It is basically the classic Doom FPS gameplay everybody loves, distilled to its purest form and modernized. You constantly blast your way through waves of absolute poo poo-tons of demons with as little downtime as you want and it is loving awesome. Oh, and as a random side note, the regular shotgun is actually viable from a distance in this mod. The pattern stays tight even at like 50 yards away. Small detail, but it was one of the first things I noticed and I still appreciate that there's at least one game out there where shotgun shells don't feel like they're being fired out of a gun with a barrel shaped like a traffic cone. Here's the feature list from the website: 35 new maps all from scratch (+4 secret maps) 18 powerful weapons (some totally new ones) 20 different powerups to play with 30 additional new monsters (some totally new ones) 5 different gamemodes (e.g. Deadline, Core, ...) 1 complete new HUD (add. info on screen) unique voice acting & announcers full soundtrack with exclusive songs by Lexus Alyus 32bit skyboxes, fog, lights and environment dynamic lights for actors and in maps cinematic sequences for gamemodes and endings special effects, atmospheric and beautifl full multiplayer for Skulltag, up to 8 players bounty, earn credits for killed demons dynamic skill for all skill settings and player counts hub system with several tiers to battle through shop system with countless items to buy Also, once a map is unlocked, it's infinitely replayable. The maps are varied as hell too, not only in visual style and color but also in layout and mechanical design. There are levels with one large path enemies travel through, multiple paths, single and multiple spawn points, paths that interweave and circle around, grids, platforms, cliffs, huge singular arenas, everything. http://stronghold.drdteam.org/ GreatGreen fucked around with this message at 16:21 on May 2, 2013 |
