I guess Allagash wasn't bullshitting when they said FV13 was coming to their entire distribution footprint. Just scored two bottles in southern Delaware, and we hardly ever get anything special (we don't even get Stone Old Guardian / IRS most of the time)

I think that it is also a product of people reading or watching reviews from others with more developed palates and a greater vocabulary and then trying to emulate that in their own reviews. "Nutty" can be a great number of things, as can "hoppy". Where I used to work, we would have sommelier-lead tastings of wine, and we'd taste something "well, it's fruity" and he'd get all pissed and roll his eyes and ask "What kind of fruity?" and then we'd all sit there for twenty minutes and really refine our perceptions of the flavors. It definitely takes a lot of time and effort to really be able to describe something as complex as a wine or beer. When I first started there, my notes on a tuscan white were literally "sweet and fruity". Same wine, seven months later: "honey, bosc pear, jasmine, lychee, mineral". How do you know? You go out and eat things and think about them. While I was there, if I went out to eat during the week, I would always order something I had never eaten before, if possible. When I went grocery shopping, I'd buy all sorts of weird poo poo. You kind of build on your ability as you go along. And it's not all BA-circlejerking, either (Well, if you're posting loving nutbag reviews about how you tasted "shade-grown georgian tobacco" or "unripe Vaccinium uliginosum from an upland seasonal bog", that's different). Working on your own palate is a lot of fun and you'll start to notice things in beers you've had twenty times before that you never picked up on.

The problem with the list you've laid out is that there's not any really easy way to get from Old City up to Northern Liberties unless you cab it, which sounds like that could be a problem for a bachelor party. Then either head west and do Strangelove's (this just opened and they have a great selection) Tria Monk's Misconduct Good Dog maybe Jose Pistolas maybe Nodding Head There's a ton of stuff around this area. It's almost too difficult to narrow down... Or head south and do Twisted Tail Tattooed Moms Bainbridge Street Barrel House Growlers Royal Tavern The Pope Lucky 13 Or take a look at Philly Tap Finder and map out your crawl based on the best tap lists. In any case, pretty much anywhere you pick is going to be packed with a ton of bars and you probably won't make it that far anyway. My standard crawl starts at Lucky 13 and head up Passyunk. We make it to Pat's just in time to end the night with a drunk cheesesteak party. That "nutty" flavor can come from aging the beer sur lie or from oxidation (just like wine), or from a whole host of different malts and adjuncts and even from barrel-aging. Is it "nutty" like hazelnuts? Is it a woody nutty flavor? Does it taste like roast peanuts or whole-wheat toast? Is it an unpleasant nutty flavor from autolysis of the yeast? Is it even supposed to taste nutty? Specificity lends itself to a better understanding of the stuff in the glass. I'd love to sit down and write up some wiki content on flavors and off-flavors and their origins, but  .

So I'm officially going to Apple's WWDC event this year, so can anyone give me recommendations for places to visit in the area of Moscone West in San Francisco? I won't have a car and will be limited to using the BART, and I'm going with a guy who probably won't really be up to traveling too far just to get good beer.

Looks like you'll only be a mile from City Beer Store. One of the best bottle shops I've ever been in, plus they have a bar with a great tap list and insane bottles. I'd also recommend a cab ride to Toronado.

Didn't find any Permanent Funeral at the Binny's by me tonight (apparently they went out Wednesday to the suburbs) but I did grab a bottle of Enjoy By 5.17 so that was cool. I've been looking for this one whenever I go into any beer store, glad I found one. I think I'll hit up Three Floyd's for lunch on Sunday to see if I can get it at their brewpub. If not, they have other great beers there.

I think I figured out why 2012/2013 Victory at Sea is so much inferior to the 2011 version. It's just way too bitter and acrid so you don't taste anything but roasted flavors. I wonder if they changed the recipe and/or had a different maltster on their roasted malts or something.

You have to go to a real crappy bar to not find some local (Weyerbacher, Troegs, Victory, Dogfish Head) or even Sierra Nevada on tap. It's not uncommon at all to see local beer on tap. What makes a good beer bar is one that knows how to balance their taps.
