Don't hospitals need to report dog bites? I imagine if the burglar gets away, no one will ever know, but if he's caught and needs medical treatment for a dog bite, the owners will be fine or jailed. Which is exceedingly stupid, but there you go.

Or maybe this a lucrative new career move for burglars! Change to law so they can also sue for damages and then we can have people breaking into other people's houses and antagonizing their dogs for a little cash-for-bites payday. It's brilliant!

I guess it'd be like someone suing for cutting themselves on broken glass while the burgled your house. Broken glass that wouldn't have been there had they not illegally entered your home.

Problem!

I am the queen of France.
In the US burglars can sue you in civil court for injuries they sustain breaking into your house. Sometimes they win.

Somewhat related, does having a "beware of dog" sign posted open you up for liability if your dog bites someone in your yard because it displays that you know your dog bites? Or is this more uneducated bullshit being spewed by coworkers? I was considering putting one up at my new place because Max is a cattle dog and biting things is what he does and I don't want someone accidentally getting bit if they try to cut through my yard or something.

Signs can both be used to prove an owner was aware that their dog was dangerous as well as to prove that the injured party assumed liability when they entered the premise. Seems like a huge crapshoot, you might be better off with "no trespassing" signs. You should definitely check your county's dog bite laws though.

What I've heard (living in a city where gangs have shootouts with off-duty Army Rangers, at least historically) is that putting up a Beware of Dog sign increases your odds of having the police shoot your dog if they need to enter your property (or think they do, even if it's the wrong house).

On that note, law enforcement policy is starting to have a mood change (loving finally). All officers are being advised that if they shoot and kill a family pet, their department should expect and prepare for a lawsuit. Dogs are protected under the 4th Amendment of the Constitution, being considered "property" that cannot be unlawfully seized (or in this case, the life thereof to be seized). In addition, there's now precedent for this interpretation by several circuit courts of appeals, so now pet owners do have some recourse - how successful a lawsuit would be against a police department is still up for debate, though.

This is my mom's dog, Huggy. She's a rescue from someone who couldn't keep her and her and her father anymore, so my mom took them both. Huggy was used as a breeding dog and Buddy (the father) was kept separate from her all the time, and from EVERYONE, and had his own little room in the previous owner's house. He was quite anti-social when my parents took him home and would go off by himself in my parent's place to be alone. But he's getting better!

The moment my mom met Huggy, she knew she wanted her. This dog is SUPER affectionate and LOVES to be held. She'll go nutso crazy and beg for belly rubs or until you pick her up, and once you do, she's super calm. I'm not really fond of smaller dogs but she's so freakin' cute! She'll fall asleep in your lap or right beside you on the couch, even in your arms as you're holding her.

Just put up a "BEWARE OF DOG OWNER" sign, and if someone accuses your dog of biting them, claim it was actually you that bit them when you found them trespassing. You have the sign as evidence of an aggressive dog owner, so your word should have more weight than theirs.

Is this a US/UK culture thing? I have never once heard of someone with an aggressive or reactive dog using a beware of the dog sign. For a lot of people, having a beware of the dog sign is as much a part of having a dog as having dog beds and a leash. V:shobon:V

Sounds like it is. I've only ever seen beware of the dog signs used here to mean something like "careful you don't run over my dog or let him out or whatevs" or in an ironic "ha ha my scary guard dog is tiny and fluffy" way, not "my dog is a bastard he will straight up murder you".

Your cats eat plastic bags too?! My last cat Jimmy used to eat them all the loving time if we left them out. He'd ignore actually food sometimes in favor of chewing the poo poo out of a plastic bag. I'm happy to find out that I'm not the only one who's had to deal with a Real Dumb Cat.

I have no idea. My cat loves to eat sticky tape. If there's a package around she'll sit there and pull it off, then make the most :downs: faces when it sticks to her tongue and whiskers, then try to eat it.

Ok, so not Peta, but pica.

My cat just eats hairs. My very long hairs. I thought that was bad.

Of course, I do have to snip them off his butt when he poops them out with poo dangling, after I've chased him around the house since he was running like mad from the poo zombies.

That's always the way. One of my great-uncles was a professional golfer, and he ruined an entire championship season one year by throwing out his shoulder tossing a football in the back yard with his son.

Bailey is on what I'd like to call "poop strike". He hates pooping when its wet and cold outside, which it has been all week, but he was good about going until this morning. I brought him to the fenced in section and he just turned and gave me the saddest look. Wouldn't go sniff or walk. After trying to prod him into walking, he just got even more mopey. He only cheered up when we were inside the house. He better not poop in the house.

Guys who love kitties are adorable and clearly Sadie needs someone to hold the brush while she rubs and kneads while you're gone.

Major had his 8th vet check in a month and a half and they said I can finally stop bringing him in for rechecks! His facehole is dime sized now and should close up completely within a week or so. I asked the vet what I should do if it comes back and she said "if that thing comes back I am kicking your rear end out of my lobby and the specialist can deal with it because I still don't know what the hell that was". Good job being special, dog.

Now I just need to deal with the emotional fallout of so many unpleasant vet trips. The first visit he was perfect in the car even without all his car ride paraphernalia and was able to calmly great both people and dogs in the lobby. By visits 6-7 he was barking endlessly in the car and starting to slam into the sides of his crate again and was lunging and screaming at other dogs. I've got car rides back under control with a few sessions going around the block with his manners minder so I'm hoping the dog issues will be resolved quickly with a few drop in sessions at the behaviorist's office.

I'm just happy my life is no longer covered in face goo and sugar.

So far I have:

- collar, leash (plus spares)
- long line
- first aid kit + a handbook on dog first aid
- musher's wax
