Well SCREW YOU, SUBVERTED!' Nerd-types can have this issue where they consume so much entertainment they become overstimulated, and as a result they can start viewing traditional, classic storytelling methods with contempt (they're too familiar with it). Martin has a LOT of this in his work: in the earlier books it mostly worked for his benefit (Ned's death), but I think he may have over-reached with the Red Wedding: it seemed to happen as much due to plot as because Martin wanted to be REALISTIC and DARK and all those other words. What these types don't realize is that just because they're bored with tradition doesn't mean everyone else is, and while tradition shouldn't dictate what you want to write, it should always be taken into account and given a measure of respect. Writing to try and surprise a reader and defy their expectations is one thing; writing to purposely throw their expectations in their faces to spite their 'boring, less consuming of entertainment' mindsets is something else entirely, and I really think that's what Gurm did on some level.

I always felt the Red Wedding was just GRRM's attempt to one-up Ned's death. See, with Ned's death, it's so shocking and new and fresh and exciting, that it stimulates fantasy readers in ways they're rarely stimulated. So they keep reading GRRM's books in an attempt to capture that same high again, much like a drug addict. However, they're expecting genre subversion, so GRRM just can't do the same thing again--they expect it, they high won't be as powerful. So he dithers around with A Clash of Kings to throw reader's scents (and because he's knows they'll keep reading whatever he puts out--they're addicted) before reaching the Red Wedding in A Storm of Swords.

Following that logic, he needs to really throw off reader's before he can give them a new, stronger high. He's already hosed around for two books, so we're either going to get something amazing in The Winds of Winter, or... he'll just die and we'll all be forced to go into withdrawal.

That's right, ASOIAF fans are basically drug addicts. The TVIVers have it bad. The Bad Thread is the GRRMy version of AA. We know we have a problem, but at least we admit it--and admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery.

They'd probably be Red Wings or Penguins fans. The worst fans.

In football, the Babby Thread would be Steelers fans, The Walking Dead thread would be Falcons fans, and the Community thread would be Packers fans, aka the most annoying fans of anything on earth.

This thread, naturally, is the Cleveland Browns. Total poo poo, hepatitis and various other infections, and a Stockholm Syndrome-like following of something unimaginably terrible that deep down you know will be nothing but bad for you. And, on top of all that, the sickening knowledge that despite all your hope, you know this shitshow isn't going anywhere.

Yeah, its what Film Crit Hulk gets into (once you get past all the capitalization) on his review of the books. The whole drat saga is a perpetual witch-hunt by an author for ways to gently caress with his audience, intrinsic worth or entertainment be damned.

You know, people keep bringing up the whole 'Gurm has given up writing, he's going to just talk about football and creep on the actresses until he dies, then his notes will be burned and the planned ending will vanish into oblivion and we'll never have closure' thing, but considering how most people in this thread also think, at the same time, Gurm is completely unable to finish what he started in any way that's saitisfying, maybe this is a GOOD thing. Instead of a set canon ending that will probably just disappoint everyone, you're free to decide how it ended yourself. You want Mad Queen Dany reigning over the ashes? Well there's no set ending, so why the hell can't it end that way? You want the Starks to come back and crush everyone? Just as valid as the last one! You want the White Walkers to turn it into a kingdom of the dead and ice? Sure! Hodor on the Iron Throne? WHY NOT? Dany swimming across the Narrow Sea, pointing her butt at Westeros, and drowning the whole continent in poo poo? Hey, no set ending, yours is just as valid as whatever Gurm had planned. He didn't write it down, so it's open to the world now.

A counterpoint to the Red Wedding discussion. Yes, the entire entourage of the "good guys" is decimated, but at the same time, the Freys are systematically being assassinated while Roose Bolton only survives by the marriage of his bastard to a fraud, and that is unraveling. Tywin Lannister is dead, a product of his unconscionable actions against his son. His "heir" in Cersei is a paranoid lunatic. Jaime, our first antagonist, has been thoroughly humbled. It's less a book series of overarching themes than individual intersecting plots. These plots have consequences, and individuals bear the cost. The War of the Roses was the culmination of plots upon plots, wheels within wheels. And how did that end? Henry Tudor, barely related to anyone, seized power and killed everybody else. Not exactly romantic, but sensible. If we should ever receive an ending, it'll be something like that.

The GRRM told hbo how it ends, so we will have closure on stuff like Dany and Jon and Stannis.

But because HBO ignores all the subtle background stuff, we won't get closure on things like the Tower of Joy, the disappearance of Rickon, and Varys being a merling.

Considering I'd wager that this thread probably COULD write porn parodies of the five current books and the two theoretical ones still to be written before Gurm releases Book 6, SURE. WHY NOT.

This is not being trapped by plot. This is being trapped by characterization. Robb is repeatedly held up as being Just Like Dad. Unfortunately for him, what is one thing everyone knows Eddard Stark did? Bang some chick while away at war. Turned out okay for Dad, so Robb bangs some chick while away at war. But Robb is also really stupid and his sense of honour compels him to marry that woman, neverminding he was already promised to a Frey girl as payment for crossing the Twins. This is how Robb's characterization gets him killed, because he is His Father's Son. His honour gets his head lopped off, just like daddy.

Someone who's trapped by the plot in this series would be Ned, actually. Ned had to die to spark off the war. If he'd just been held hostage (or indeed never gone south at all), none of this would be happening.

Pretty much this. Depending on what happens with Jon Snow and his 'death', it's a little to soon to play that card against GRRM before ruling out Merense Knot and masturbatory reflections on his own writing.
