Eh? If you're talking about previously discussing the general idea of marriage and family and how you both feel about that etc, then okay maybe. But if you're saying that the girl shoud know that the proposal is coming up in the very near future, that the ring is bought, then you're just being weirdly contrarian to 200 years of cultural tradition.

What's the best way to cover up a tattoo for work? It's a two-to-three inch circle above my right ankle. I figured if I was in a work setting that wasn't okay with tattoos, I'd probably also need to wear long slacks as well, but my current job involves working with children. The dress code is somewhat relaxed over summer, and I'd rather not sweat through dress pants in August.

I could wrap it in a gauze or an Ace bandage, but that might get weird questions. Or I could try putting make-up over it, though I don't know if the tattoo might bleed through.

How exactly does are you supposed to read Reddit? I've never posted there or really read the comments. I just signed up for an account, and the threads are sorted by rating not chronologically? People are referencing replies that you can't see unless you know already know exactly where they are in the thread. I tried to read an AMA and I have to ctrl+f to find the responses from the subject, it's awful. Am I just doing it wrong?

I think this is less of a problem than you think it is.

Question: Is it passive aggressive/bad to withhold my new employers name to my current employer when I submit my resignation? And what should I say when asked about it?

Background:

I'm going to be submitting my letter of resignation to my current employer in about two weeks. I work for a small family owned company of 25 employees. 6 of the 25 employees are family members including the president and vice president. I've worked there 6 years and this was my first position in this industry.

I don't want to burn this bridge as this company has given me the experience to land my new position, so I'm keeping my nose clean and working hard until the end of my employment. This is the most disfunctional, backbiting and poorly managed company that I've heard of. (Actually, Tiger Oil Company is just slightly worse. Look up the letters)

I don't have any precedents that they might try to sabotage my new job, but I simply don't trust them farther than I can spit. I'm concerned that withholding the name would stir up suspicions and the proverbial hornets nest. The company I'm moving to is a competitor, but only for 10% of our business. I don't have a non-compete clause in my current position.

I will very likely have to work with my current company in the future in some capacity. As a matter of fact, my current company and future company are working for the same client, in different capacities, on the same project. These are huge civil projects. I can't get too much more specific.

How have you guys dealt with this? What is the professional way to handle this?

Thanks.

Why do you care about burning bridges if you would (presumably) never go back there again and they are just as terrible as you say?

It probably doesn't really matter what you say, if they decide you are being unfair they will be angry and if not, they won't.

I guess I'm unsure why you would want to withhold the name of your new employer. If the industry is that connected, and you "will very likely have to work with my current company in the future," won't they quickly learn of it anyway?

And all I can think is how unimaginably awesome would it be to have a tree in your backyard that completely dwarfs everything around it - the sort of thing that people could see for miles and miles. And sure, here in Richmond, Virginia we don't have nearly the right climate to grow to their full height (~300ft), but even if it grows to half its potential it's still reaching over anything else in the area. So my questions are

1) How tall could a sequoia or redwood grow in Virginia (climate zone 7a)?

2) Would there be any legal ramifications to having a tree that large/tall in your backyard?

and 3) I live near a modest-sized park (260 acres), is it terrible of me (from an invasive species standpoint) that I daydream of planting a half dozen of these across a couple acres, so that generations from now, long after I'm gone, people can come to marvel at the sheer beauty of a miniature redwood grove 2,000 miles away from where it's supposed to be?

It would take a very very long time. But hey, gift to the future.

As a disclaimer that I know nothing about trees or tree regulations, from a commonsense standpoint you wouldn't be allowed to have such a huge tree in the middle of an urban area due to risk of it snapping from high winds and causing some real damage. I'd wager you also have to worry about tree diseases of some sort but again no idea on that one.

#3:
There's a reason there aren't giant redwoods growing all over the place. You could certainly try but wind/heat/rainfall/competition probably will not give it the right conditions to survive to adulthood.

I recently saw a tree that the landowner claimed was some sort of redwood indigenous to the east coast (Maine, perhaps?). I'm sure it's not as tall as the giants of the West Coast, but it was still a pretty impressive tree. So, you might look at related species that would survive better in your area, and could still put on a nice display.

Or, you know, plant some of your nicer local tree species. Maybe plant them in the shape of a Mandelbrot set if you want to give the future a fun treat.

Edit: I've spent a little time on Google, and I don't see any redwood trees native to the East Coast of North America. Maybe I misunderstood the owner, or maybe she misspoke.

All the responses are grouped. You can make a comment and then people reply to that, which nests within. If people are replying in new comments, they have no idea how reddit works and you can safely ignore them nine times out of ten. If you're interested in a specific person, you can bring up browser extensions that will help you sort, and there are other subreddits that put things like AMAs in grid formats that are easier to read, or you can just click on a name and read all their posts.

The threaded comments are a neat way to have little discussions without making it cumbersome, especially considering the size of the userbase.

They survey a sample of people, asking if they were victims of a crime and if they reported it. Methods of doing this vary. For one example, see National Crime Victimization Survey Criminal Vicimization 2010 (pdf) and scroll down to methodology. More answers with varying degrees of usefulness at yahoo answers and reddit. If you're really interested in this technical issue, this document goes over the methodological issues in self-report surveys.

Canada has 100 Mile House in British Columbia.

Edit: there's also 150 Mile House, 70 Mile House and 93 Mile House. "The name 93 Mile House results from its location at the 93 Mile-post from Lillooet on the Old Cariboo Road, which was built to serve Cariboo goldfields-bound travellers before the opening of the 'newer' Cariboo Road via Ashcroft" so that's what the distances are referring to.

Love this: "150 Mile House was an important stop on the Cariboo Wagon Road during the Cariboo Gold Rush. It is the junction for roads to the communities of Likely and Horsefly to the northeast." Likely and Horsefly :canada:

That makes perfect sense, I hadn't thought of that one. In my neighborhood a 300 foot tree coming down the wrong way could take out half the block. Not that it would ever hit 300 feet, but it's fun to think about. :)

No they're hyperactive monsters that will destroy your home, cause you to get criminal charges (since it's illegal in most places to have as a pet,) and will always slip it's leash, you have to build the animal equivalent of Fort Nox to keep it, and the current Rabies Vaccines aren't tested for Foxes, so if it bites someone it has to be euthanized. On top of that most Vets won't take care of a Fox even in emergencies.

I'm not an expert in this, but I think it is more likely to be legal than you think. For example, in my state all breeds of foxes are legal to keep as a pet. No permit required. This is just based on my limited googling of the subject a couple of weeks ago when I saw a fennec fox video on Reddit.
