I think the worst thing about Obama's presidency is that time he burst into an FBI interrogation room and started hysterically screaming Miranda rights at Dzokhar Tsarnaev while the Secret Service tried to drag him out.

The second-worst thing is his policy of over-regulating businesses. I know three separate small restaurateurs who have been shut down by the Obama administration for not serving Dijon mustard.

If they say something about the decline there, point out that what caused that decline and economic recovery was the New Deal and World War 2, and massive sustained government spending, and then ask them if what they really wanted was for Obama to spend more stimulus money. That should be good.

Are the usual suspects crowing about needing to find offsets in the budget before we can send aid to those affected?

I'm glad you asked, because this was my first reaction. For those who aren't aware, the person who derails every disaster relief effort since his election in 2006 is Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn.

Coburn is the most consistent Senator I've ever seen. He will use anonymous holds to stop any bill if it's unpaid for--Haitian relief, Ugandan relief, Sri Lankan relief, Sandy, Katrina, 9/11 First Responders, he doesn't give one poo poo. He will and has held up emergency aid for months over budget concerns. He's even sided with Democrats when it was a military thing that was overbudget. One of the only pieces of legislation that Obama sponsored as a Senator was the Coburn/Obama Transparency Act, to reduce spending on campaigns.

So this should come as no surprise.

quote:

:siren: Oklah. GOP Senator takes own constituents hostage, demands budget cuts or no tornado aid :siren:

In the face of a major tornado disaster in his home state, that has taken the lives of over 90 Oklahomans, including at least 24 children in a devastated elementary school, Coburn says he won’t support disaster relief for his home state unless the budget is cut elsewhere.

The Wendy's by the highway looks like a tiny cathedral. I stopped in at the mall, because they have the only Five Guys in the state, and I felt like I was going to get escorted out for vagrancy.

It's the epitome of the rich Mississippian, because it's adjacent to the capital, so all the politicians live there, and commute into one of the poorest, blackest, major cities in the country. Any pithy response should be fine.

1. Modern farming usually involves threshing the crop and destroying the seed anyway. Few crops have been harvested since the 1950's in a way that would allow them to reuse seeds anyway. It's no big loss for big farms.

2. That has nothing to do with GMO. Soil infertility has been a problem for a thousand years. Hell, by 1800, farms in South Carolina were turning infertile, because they'd been in continuous production for 300 years. That's why we know to rotate now. Problem solved.

3. Yeah, that is a problem. You might even bioengineer some new crops to fight that problem.

4. Terminator seed technology has never been used, only researched. Also, the last line there is hilarious. I guess infertility is a dominant trait? Can someone show me where infertility fits on a Punnett Square? How does infertility spread?

5. Ask Zimbabwe about the switch from centralized farms to small, local farms. I'll wait while you wiki Robert Mugabe.

Of course, the immediate response will be "Oh, I guess you think we should all just bend over for corporations and eat poison and you hate the earth!" Don't let them change the subject from science.

Wasn't that Monsanto case the US Supreme Court just heard about replanted soybeans? A farmer was buying seed from the co-op and not replanting his own in order to try to get around their licensing fees. He was able to just assume it would be resistant to Roundup since 90% of soy is.

True. A better response would be that if they really want to switch to local-only foods, they better start only buying foods that are able to grow nearby without any assistance. It's not like centralized farms are being used for no reason and we just like to ship food across the country because, I dunno, we like trucks or something.

If it really did make sense to plunk down a shitload of cornfields in Arizona, the big farm companies would have already done so by now. They haven't because it requires more energy (and thus, is more expensive and less environmentally friendly) to run a lot of climate-controlled greenhouses than it does to just grow them where they grow and ship them to where they don't.

The truck had a giant picture of the owner of the company with the amazing quote "The Government didn't build my business, I did" on it. (remember this?)

A Co-Worker decided this is the best thing ever and decided to go on and on about it to everyone. When I merely pointed out that this mans entire shipping business is literally built on the back of the government(the Highway system), and that his employees were probably educated in public schools(evil government again) the guy got upset, mumbled something about dumb liberals, and stormed off.

Actually, Monsanto would prevent you producing your own seeds. Short version: Terminator genes would cause plants grown from GMO plants to be sterile, meaning any seeds taken from them would be useless. This would cripple agriculture in developing countries who rely on keeping seeds from previous harvests and strengthen the stranglehold agricorps have on farming and seed production.
