FW sold Nectar. I'm not sure how that affected Black Xantus (which I believe was actually brewed at FW), but I've seen it a lot more this year than I ever have before. A good beer but not as good as Parabola.

There's boxes and boxes of Black Xantus at a bottle shop near me. I don't think anyone has a clue what it even is. Even I've got a bottle kicking around somewhere in my fridge. I should pop it open and find out since there's a billion of 'em so they're obviously not rare or anything.

I've only been in Denver for two hours but I've already picked up a 4 pack of Myrcenary, a Boulevard LC3 and a Crooked Stave Hop Savant. Life is excelllleeeeennnnttttt

Found all of the above at Hugo's Colorado Beer and Spirits, which has opened on 12th and Corona some time in the past year since I've last been here. Amazing selection, decent prices, and all of the beer is properly stored in fridges. They are obviously focused on Colorado beers, spirits and wine, but there was a nice selection of west coast beers as well. Definitely recommended to all Denver goons.

Black Xantus 2012 was a hot mess when it hit stores. I had some a few weeks back and it had started to mellow - you can certainly go for it now, but I think I'm saving my next bottle for December...

When a beer "starts to mellow" that just means it is losing flavor and never should have been released in the first place most likely.

If it isn't good fresh then it probably isn't good :radcat:

Drinking a Marilime Law Ninja from Pipeworks. Very unusual, but still pretty tasty. My wife picked up some elderflower in the aroma, but lime is the pre-eminent extra player here, as expected. Strikes a pretty nice balance all things considered, though the lime mutes the bitterness of the finish somewhat. Could have easily seen the addition of lime overpowering and being a disaster, but i am pleasantly surprised.

Couldn't drink this every day, but it is a pretty interesting beer, would be great outdoors if it weren't 40/50 degrees in Chicago right now. We'll see how it changes after it sits a bit and I take it out when I fire up the grill. I've had all the Pipeworks NvU varieties (except Citra), and while this was not my favorite (I loved Simcoe), ill buy pretty much any IPA Pipeworks puts out just to try it.

A bad beer won't get good, but a good beer might get great with age. See: Abyss, most good barleywines, a lot of sours, etc.

BTW, looks like Cigar City's collaboration with Widmer, Gentlemen's Club, will be released on June 13th as part of Portland Beer Week.

http://www.newschoolbeer.com/2013/05/cigar-city-brewingwidmer-collaboration.html

The New School posted:

About Gentlemen’s Club: Drawing inspiration from an Old Fashioned cocktail recipe and the Gentlemen’s Clubs where the cocktail was first served over 100 years ago, this collaboration beer brings together two breweries from opposite ends of the country and ingredients from the home states of both breweries. Using an Old Ale recipe as the base beer, Gentlemen’s Club was brewed with cherries and oranges, Alchemy, Sorachi Ace and Pacifica hops, and hand-selected specialty malts to mirror the qualities typically found in an Old Fashioned cocktail. The beer was aged on three different woods: bourbon barrels, rye whiskey barrels and new oak spirals, resulting in three unique versions of the beer, each offering a slightly different take on the same age-old recipe.

Sounds good. I'm looking forward to trying it.

The New Belgium takeover last night was a good time. I'm really glad I tried a sip of someone else's Pluot before ordering one for myself- I found it to be sickeningly sweet; not in the Southern Tier liquid candy way, more in the "was this fruit rotten when they threw it in the fermenter?" way. The Paardebloem was light and refreshing, though I didn't pick up as much of the herbal/earthiness from the dandelion greens as I had been expecting to. Still really enjoyable. The Coffee Chocolate Stout and Prickly Passion were delicious as always.

funkybottoms- that WWB Violet sounds AMAZING! Is it easy to find? Definitely going to have my roommate on the lookout next time she heads back to Denver, wish you had posted a few days ago since she just got back from her most recent trip last night.

(Speaking of local CO stuff my roommate and I just cracked open an Elevation Senorita horchata porter. Really tasty, I'm a big fan of cinnamon porters and this is hitting all the right spots, as well as making me wish that Roth could bottle Forgotten Hollow properly without making it a hot infected mess.)

I just got back from the shop and they somehow still have multiple bottles of Love Child No. 3 on the shelf a week later, so I jumped on that. Happy early birthday to me :toot:

WWBV is gone. It sold out on its release on ROY-G-BIV day because like 500 people showed up. The remaining stock is tiny and just used for competitions. I stopped by after skiing and all the bottles were gone but I got some on tap and, uh, it's really good.

But several other of the WWB stuff is still around in bottles. I had the red, orange and green and I enjoyed all of them. I tried one of them at a friend's house because I don't think whichever one that was had a retail release. I'd like to find the rest but :effort: Crooked Stave is really a good brewery though, and I'm glad they're moving their taproom to a larger location. Not sure if that will also increase their output.

High on Shatner's Bassoon
So after my last batch of American beers (GI Honker's and IPA, Sierra Nevada APA, Sam Adams Lager, Anchor Steam Beer) of which I found all pretty disappointing except the Goose Island IPA - which was just good - and the Sam Adams Boston Lager - which was a very nice lager hugely helped by the fact I expected very little of it after finishing up the others - I set out to find some better beers. Luckily I found a beer shop up the road that had a whole ton of stuff that I wanted to try so I went a bit mad and stocked up.

Here's the haul:

I pretty much grabbed every beer I recognised from being mentioned in this thread and a few other things at random, along with some German, Belgian and Danish stuff. Any suggestions on what to drink first, don't let me down again America!

again? <insert Revolutionary War joke> can't tell you what to drink first, but if you don't like any of those three stouts, you can go ahead and write us off entirely (since GI's IPA is English-style). and yeah, much better haul this time around.

it's raining zerglings!
Picked up a four pack of BBA Siberian Night last night from the brewery, along with two bottles of their BBA Wee Heavy. While I was there, I got to try a smoked black lager that they have as a taphouse-only beer, and it was really fantastic. I've only tried a few smoked beers, and they've all been pretty awesome. I need to pick up a rauchbier already, although I'm a bit afraid that style could be a bit too smokey for me.

Yeah, a bunch of them are way over the top - like every other time American brewers discover a "new" style. It's campfire turned up to 11. If you like smoke, maybe track down a good dry porter or something. I'm drinking a Smuttynose Robust Porter at the moment. It packs a lot of smokey deliciousness but it does it cleanly and as a result it's a beer you could sit and drink a sixer of almost any day of the year.

It's going to be a shared artisan market in an old foundry in the River North area. It has some eye-roll worthy name like The Space, but it sounds like it will be really cool. Forgot where I read it, it was only recently announced. They said it the whole market space would be able to accommodate a 500-strong line AND still allow for a taps only crowd at the bar area. I dunno specifics, but the more I type the more I think I should be googling this place.

Also all this Crooked Stave talk has me in the mood to grab some for this weekend. They had some WWBRed last time I was there, hopefully they have more. Otherwise I'll have to settle for Surrette
