The problem you will run into is that you'll need a shore duty billet after your sea tour (dear god, don't just extend your sea tour) and they're all 3 year tours. So you'll need to re-enlist or extend out to that. Prototype is a little shorter, but not much.

The only billet I would consider worthwhile is A / Power instructor, because it gives the best opportunity to get / finish a degree, has the most reasonable schedule, and it's far easier to secure a job from a shore billet than it does from a boat constantly in shift work / going to sea. I would not re-enlist without the billet guaranteed in the contract. Even then it's a hard call, and you're not going to get it as a junior 2nd anyway.

When I was a newbie, I had this grand idea that being part of a PCU would be good times, even had verbal orders to Makin Island at one point.

In hindsight, do you really want to be the person fixing everything from the breaking in process? I would have to believe the best ships to go through are those that are maybe a deployment into their life cycles that have just gotten out of an Insurv/ORSE thing.

I have heard both extremes.

Remember, you won't be getting the newest gear. You'll be getting the "as designed" gear that you will immediately have to tear out during your first shipyard period for your first planned incremental availability period, woo.

You will also have to deal with everything not working because one of a thousand wires was put in wrong. Also, power range testing is not fun. Trust me.

On the flip side, you really don't have anything to do until your equipment comes online. Then again, I know that some ships will make people stand fake watch at a fake panel for practice. I am not making that up. You will stand the midwatch staring at a cardboard RPCP. I wish I was making that up but I am not.

You haven't lived until you've stood Shutdown Reactor Operator without a reactor or RPCP installed. Been there, done that. I still had logs to take.

You will go through an asston of training and simulation. This is better now because they have no-poo poo simulators for a lot of stuff.

You have to deal with shipyard bubbas, they are the worst, laziest, untrustworthy fucks who will gently caress you without a second thought. They will gently caress poo poo up and have zero accountability and you will put in long hours fixing it, and God help you if they can claim it was your fault to begin with. This will be the case for any major avail.

Anything PCU being built now is either a Ford-class supercarrier or a Virginia boat; I'm assuming you're going Virginia. Even if it is not the newest new gear it's very recent and far better than any 688. This is a good thing. In hindsight I would've killed for a PCU VA over my 688i just for the gear.

As a nub you might not go to sea or they might lend you out to another boat so you can qualify junior watchstations. Nevertheless you're likely to do much less sea time over your tour than on a random seasoned vessel, which is the biggest perk of the PCU. I don't remember if they'll do provisional SRO qual before you can do RO / EO drills at sea.

This times a thousand. Right before I got off of active duty, a shipyard contractor organization got busted for wiring a bunch of poo poo backwards. They tried to throw me under the bus because I had gone around with them to make sure that all of their connections were tight since they had blown up a pump because a connection came loose. Luckily my chief came with me to the critique and said "I specifically told him that all he was doing was making sure screws were tight. Nothing else."

Chief-bro best-bro.

E: gently caress shipyard workers that would take forever on a job on my last boat because it meant their paid vacation in Charleston lasted longer. They'd even go so far as to brag about it to us when we were on 12 hour days until they got it fixed.

I have a buddy JO of mine being red-detailed (read: non-vol), after his 3.5 year sea duty, to a PCU submarine for his "shore duty". First thing my CO asked him once we received his orders? "So, what do you want to do once you get out of the navy lieutenant?"

In all seriousness, it has it's upsides; you're on shore all the time, there are periods of real low activity when you are waiting for things to be turned over from shipyard, but all in all....pray for an operational boat.

Some guys on grad hold go out to Folly Beach on a Tuesday with a bottle of vodka - cleverly disguised in a Gatorade bottle, apparently liquor isn't allowed on the beach - and have a good time. One of them is underage, so he's DD and doesn't drink. Later that night they run into some local chicks who've locked their keys in the car. DD thinks this is a golden opportunity and sends his drunk buddy 5 blocks down to bring the car over while he and his other drunk friend work on helping these poor ladies. Guy sideswipes a car and keeps driving - in full view of local cops.

Driver's fate is still out, but MM3 Worst DD Ever and the other guy were both the subjects of an open masting this morning.

Misoperating the plant is a much more serious and valid concern than a base lockdown or some crap just because guys got drunk in town on their weekend. I know KAPL likes to exaggerate the severity of non-primary screwups a bit much but it's still a real plant that costs real money to fix if you break it.

I think my best WTF NNPTC story was right around when spice was becoming a thing. My classmate gets busted for spice and goes to mast and then DTP and the whole nine yards. Dude then takes it upon himself to steal his roommate's XBOX when he's moving his stuff out. The roommate reports the missing XBOX and they search the guy's DTP quarters. They find the XBOX and more spice. Dude goes to summary courts martial and gets adjudged some time in the brig.

Cross posting from the AF, but we had a kid in Tech School get busted for heroin, so they put him on lockdown, and he had three airmen escorting him. Somehow he gets into the Sergeant's office, steals his car keys they siezed, and drives off base. They caught him two weeks later fleeing for Mexico.

For sub officers I'm pretty sure it works like this: You have to qualify Engineer, which happens after you've been an Engineering division officer for >1 year and have your fish. Once you have done that and are near the end of your initial tour you can sign your contract for a maximum of 7 years. The pay is 30k a year and if you sign on for 7 you get an extra payment.

I'm not a sub officer, but I've been kicking around the idea of OCS and asking our JO's about that kind of stuff.
