I walk through the train station most days and laugh at the guys with their unloaded rifles.

Ai'ta, a militant breton language group, blocks the driveway of the French Prime Minister's secondary home in Brittany. They collected a bunch of monolingual road signs and used them in their barricade.

The guy with the French flag represents both the French state and the Breton personification of death, the Ankou.

That reminded me a little of this episode of Common Sense, by Dan Carlin, another former reporter.

Basically, federal drug war incentives are leading to small town police departments buying paramilitary and SWAT equipment and training, which they then use to militarize every aspect of police work.

He clearly criticized the capitalism of Reagan and Thatcher, describing it as "a market without a social contract," and he explained how unrestrained capitalism has lead to the creation of a demonized underclass. He's not a Marxist, but he's not shy about saying bad things about capitalism. It's worth adding that Marx didn't give a poo poo about the lumpenproletariat, and that this guy does.

I agree, he doesn't call himself a Marxist and then spends 15 minutes calling for class warfare and collective action to defeat capitalism. It's very :ironicat:

I love his show and its message but we need to as a society stop making Marxism or Socialism a bad word. loving admit it, Marx was right.

David Simon is on the verge of being a socialist, though. He understands how rotten to the core capitalism is and can explain why it is perfectly but can't bring himself to just say what we need to do is get rid of it and put something new in its' place because of how indoctrinated we're all led to believe non-market economies are dystopian hellholes.

He's saying bad things about neoliberalism, not about capitalism. He wants to go back to the era of the postwar consensus - just like all weak-kneed progressives - because it's seen as somehow 'fair', but that paints an idealised picture of the era. It ignores the fact that it was a system which could only exist thanks to the exploitation of the third world - it certainly wasn't fair to those outside of the west. And more importantly, it ignores the fact that it's impossible to return that era because of the fundamental differences in the global economic power balance.

Well gee Crasscrab, let me try and convince you using the magic of image macros.

Clearly, the irony of using a literal muppet will make you change your mind. Still not convinced?

Well I don't care anyway! My incredibly far-fetched ideas about how the Harlem Globetrotters are a zionist conspiracy to normalize the imperialist basketball the world over is true, no matter what you think!

But if logic and sci-fi references won't convince you, how about some good old :godwin:?

Now it is patently impossible for you not to believe any and all of my truths. And I do mean all, I'm not picky about believing in multiple contradictory theories on who rules the world/wants to rule it/wants to destroy it/whatever.

Thank you both. It's sad to read about, but I've thought it'd be nice to immigrate to Sweden if I could in the future so this is important information for me.

Things took a turn for the worse two nights ago when nazis formed vigilante groups and drove around the suburbs looking for "troublesome immigrants" to beat up. At first the police was apparently more concerned with chasing a 14-year old than stopping a nazi mob from beating up a kid on crutches.

The situation seems be starting to calm down now, this is somewhat due to increased police presence, but most of it could be attributed to parents, organisations, schools and older people who started to gather outside in suburbs, throwing BBQs, talking to the kids, and generally calming everything down. The riots were as big as the media made them look like. There are even some accounts of a paper trying to incite more car fires and rioting. And to do like the US and UK and advise their citizens from going to those areas is a bit ridiculous, you won´t get lynched by a mob just for being there.

Anyway Picture of semi-related things. Labour protest during a strike in Ådalen 1931. A couple minutes later five people will be killed by the military in an attempt to stop the protesters from reaching strike breakers.
Since then, the military can't be used against demonstraions or civilians.

I don't think it's implausible. I've seen material reasonably supportive of the idea that Al Qaeda wasn't really a big to-do until we started talking it up, then all sorts of loosely associated groups were like, "Yeah, that's us." It'd make sense, too. Instead of selling the American people on the 'War on Terror,' a war against something that's actually very complicated, it's Al-Qaeda, it's a simple image.

You, McNulty, are a gaping asshole. We both know this.
al-Qaeda is more shorthand for "Salafi extremists influenced by violent Qutbi ideology" than a name for any single jihadist group de facto. al-Qaeda was and is a very real group in and of itself but pretty much any faction with whom they share ideology is likely to be labeled "al-Qaeda affiliated" whether or not they have actual organizational links to al-Qaeda.

Such as, for example, these lovely fellows from Somalia:

On top of those small grains of truth however, are piled massive heaps of poo poo. Bad logic, straight up lies or just bizarre conjecture supported by nothing but steadfast conviction are what make up these kind of pictures, showing their distrust and paranoia towards anyone and anything.
