OK, I wanted to ask you guys some advice on making snappy tight snares. I'm thinking about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42GTZYaCz0A

(Min 1:35, first beat that comes in).

Any compression, EQing techniques, base samples to look for recommended?

Thoogsby posted:

You can recreate punch like that by taking a 707 tom and pitching it up to ~200kHz, also parallel compression all day.

Transient Shaper or something similar, with it set to be heavy on the attack and light on the release, is also useful.

No, just sequenced out with Scarbee bass in Kontakt and then hosed with it a lot to make it sound human.

Haha whoops, I meant Hz.

Parallel compression is basically mixing a dry signal with a compressed signal, don't know what DAW you're on but this a pretty decent tutorial for Ableton even though the music in it sucks.

I made an instrumental mixtape a pretty long while ago if anyone wants some free beats:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IypawQMx0H0 - the first track

A lot of the mixing and mastering is sloppy because I lost the original project files in a format and had to just go with the (mostly) old exports (and some of them are old as gently caress.)
My friend got on a lot of them too. Check him out if you want:

dudes making beats and then selling "leases" to 'em for like fifteen or twenty bucks. ends up leading to poo poo-tons of bad internet rappers using the same beats and usually the dudes that produce em lace em with a ton of producer tags so you know exactly who made it

if you look at that video dude posted its all like "contact me for leases" or something

i think this is the absolute worst way to approach production

Yeah I use Rough Rider compressor for parallel comrpession but don't know how to pitch stuff up in Hz, what would that be in tones/semitones?

Pretty minimalistic and depressing, don't know why... which is not a bad thing in itself, mind you! But I think this could be much better if the drum pattern didn't sound so stiff, try to get some inspiration from Flying Lotus or dudes like him.

I found another snare I like, internet producers tell me how the hell pull this off:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cPPZFK9OK0

ALSO, the sample at 20 seconds comes from this song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUx9CG4ouAY

(Minute 1:02)

I'd like to know how do you guys try to sample stuff like this, which have got some other instruments going on at the same time. The way I do it, it's basically hardcore EQ and filtering to try to get the frequency where the instrument is sounding resides (I think I actually asked this before in the thread, so this is probably me just repeating some great advice I got here). The thing is that this loving man, Omega One, gets it so "clean", I can't do it like that! Is there any trick or just be lucky, tweak the EQ like a motherfucker?

Thanks!

You can just look at a spectrum analyzer while pitching it up but a 707 tom hits naturally at about 130-140Hz and pitching it up about 5-6 steps get it into that chunky snare range. That's what a lot of those dubstep guys are doing to get those crazy punchy snares that feel like they're hitting you in the chest.

As far as the snare is concerned, it's pretty much plain parallel compression. You've the clean snare sound, and the crips snappiness is just EQing+ very heavy compression.

For the sample, the loop sampled is a high frequency synth, which would not be too hard to isolate with some EQ, but there's also the possibility that it's simply a re-creation of the synth, which wouldn't be too hard as well. But yeah, there are no miracle recipes to isolate busy samples apart from time and dedication.
