This is a lie in the last two cases. Light drug traffic and consumption in Portugal tends to be ignored if it's done with a modicum of decency but the public support for drug addicts is minimal to non-existant nowadays and police will search you and arrest you if you find them on a bad day, and most cops don't seem to have good days.

I mean, it's better than nothing, but it could be much better and certainly not what the macro says. And Cavaco Silva wouldn't support such a thing.

Might as well make it three for three!

Finnish teachers are not actually that well paid, except the most senior ones; certainly not as well as Finnish doctors (the average monthly pay of a doctor in 2010 was over 6000 euros, while for a teacher it was 3500 euros). The average classroom teacher in comprehensive school will earn about 2500-3000 euros a month, which is roughly median wage. Many careers, especially if you have a degree, will pay better.

However, teaching is a prestigious profession (at least for now - there is a risk this will change if salaries stay stagnant), the field is nearly completely unionized (like most workers in Finland are), and all teachers in a permanent position must have a master's degree in education or the subject they are teaching.

However, what really helps the Finnish education system along is the fact that Finland's social welfare system is especially targeted at reducing child poverty and advancing the living standards of children.

Social inequality and poverty in general are low, which means that there are no segregated schools that are significantly worse off than others, and both the children and their parents have the ability and the stake to advance their children's education because education is free and is universally recognized to be critical for success. Special needs children are catered for, and there is a large, public, and free library network. Or to put it more succintly, Finnish children do not have to look after their siblings full-time at home, they won't need to work to help their parents make ends meet, and they will have all the textbooks they need (mind you some of them may be a bit old and knackered).

Basically, the macro is wrong, but it wouldn't have to be.

The more complex the concept, the worse an idea it is to try and encapsulate it on a picture of something with some text overlaid. I'm sure someone said that once. Or on a piece of cardboard. I always liked the intent behind the Iceland macro though, it just sadly wasn't as quick or dramatic as it tells. We are prosecuting some of the bankers now, for instance, but the idea that our turd of a president had anything to do with that, ech.

Reddit killed the GBS star. And absorbed a large chunk of message board activity all across the net. Honestly, I just browse the front page, and some of the discussions on there are not much better/worse than here.

Unlike Something Awful! :v:

I will say in SA's defense that we're pretty open to self-criticism, with goon.txt being a treasured collection of the most heinous goonery, unlike Reddit where a lot of people flipped their poo poo over the sub-reddit "poo poo Reddit Says". Along with this, there's also the fact that SA actually has moderating.

r/ShitRedditSays isn't anything like goons.txt, it's a little forward base of criticism of Reddit that was founded by and is (as far as I know) mostly moderated by goons. That, and the fact that it focuses mainly on calling out despicable examples of straight/white/cis privilege and assorted bigotry being upvoted, agreed with and defended by the reddit community is why reddit users despise it so much. It also exists partially to troll the rest of reddit, incredibly successfully, by regularly engaging in FYAD-esque grandiose self-parody of feminist/social justice critique intermixed with the legitimate discussions of hateful privileged posts. It's pretty art.

I think r/worstof is reddit's casual self-mocking goons.txt equivalent. They hate that too, but not as much, because usually the comments showcased there are unambiguously horrible and have none of the support of the crypto-MRAs peppering the reddit userbase.

It's only on VHS and is one of those beyond-out-of-print releases such that the only seller on Amazon is asking for $300.

The entire 14.5-hour thing is on Youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU49MR19CcA

If you want it to keep but don't want to pony up serious money (also apparently there are abridged European editions, watch out) you could always download the .flv files from Youtube using an extractor and then run them on VLC.

Fair warning, most of the reviews tended to think the entire thing was boring and way too long. I kind of miss the age of the NETWORK TV MINISERIES EVENT back from when network TV was the only game in town, it's a small part of my childhood. I'd never heard of this one before today.

So I saw this book recently at my parents' friends' house.

Wow, that's pretty dire! What on earth could the Devil's Bait be? Their daughter is a lesbian and recently married a woman, is this some how related? Is this nice family hiding some deep, dark secret that will destroy my opinion of them? :ohdear:

quote:

Escape the enemy's deadly trap! The Bait of Satan exposes one of the most deceptive snares Satan uses to get believers out of the will of God-offense. Most people who are ensnared by the bait of Satan don't even realize it. Don't be fooled! You will encounter offense, and it's up to you how it will affect your relationship with God. Your response will determine your future. If offense is handled correctly, you will become stronger rather than bitter. In this tenth anniversary edition of his best-selling book, John Bevere shows you how to stay free from offense and escape the victim mentality. With more than 400,000 copies in print, this book includes testimonials of transformed people who have read copies in print, this book includes testimonials of transformed people who have read the original book and a devotional supplement, featuring discussion questions, scriptures, and prayers.

You will find answers to tough questions like these:
Why am I compelled to tell "my side" of the story?
How can I fight thoughts of suspicion or distrust?
What can I do to stop rehearsing past hurts?
How can I regain trust after someone deeply offends me?
This book will help you escape the enemy's "offensive trap" as well as empower you to stay free of offense, enabling you to have an unhindered relationship with God.

The Devil's Bait is taking offense at things.

Faith in humanity=restored.
