Playing as a viking is pretty easy but I can't stand Gavelkind at all. What's even better now is that my primary heir will get only the kingdom title while his brothers get all of the counties I've been upgrading. :argh: I can't reform because I spent too much time fiddling around with raiding and not conquering so everyone else has jumped ahead.

Well, it does give you an incentive to convert to Christianity, if taking the holy sites is out of the question and raiding has become too hard to be worthwile (because of forts). Plus it would allow you to holy war the hell out of your neighbors, though I guess they would raid you...

Found a bug. Pagan religions allow you to have women as chaplains (or 'seers' or whatever), but the events for the job still have the men_only line, so they don't actually do anything in that position.

Easy to fix, but still, that's a bit of an oversight. I don't really know why they put even put those restrictions in the job events, anyway, since restricting who can get the title does the same thing without the potential for these kinds of errors.

This isn't really accurate, since the two halves had been drifting apart for a long time before that. The mutual excommunication makes for a nice line in history to point at, but really, the doctrinal differences set in once Rome was no longer part of the ERE and no longer had to listen to the Emperor in Constantinople. The Patriarchs there always insisted that the 5 great Christian leaders (Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem) had to agree on doctrinal differences, whereas the Pope in Rome claimed the sole authority to decide, so we start seeing differences in major matters pretty early; priests allowed to marry in the east, various theological and liturgical differences that make my eyes glaze over when I hear them, and so forth. In addition to that, they were really concerned with different matters most of the time; the Pope was concerned about getting a powerful temporal protector (and then staying out from under his thumb) and dealing with bizarre politics in the city of Rome, while the Patriarch was involved in imperial politics and the theological disputes that rocked the ERE, like iconoclasm and legitimacy of divorce and suchlike.

So theologically, they were starting to diverge pretty early, even if they hadn't developed the concept of "Orthodox" and "Catholic", there was still a notion that the "Latin Rite" and the "Greek Rite" were different things, and from a real-world, practical sort of viewpoint, they were both concerned with different things, having different real-world effects that would have real gameplay differences, which would encourage them to be as separate entities from about ~600 onwards.

Speaking of all that, during the 900s the Papacy was real mess. Gibbon, I believe, called it the "pornocracy", because it made the Borgia popes look like the crusader popes. Is there a gameplay difference in religion to reflect that? Can you "reform" Catholicism? Haven't had a chance to crack open the new DLC yet, maybe once the kid goes to bed.

Can you only use the Subjugation CB against other King-level pagans? I'd like to subjugate the ruler of Wessex and complete my control of England in one go but it seems it's not to be. Also, I wish prepared invasions didn't phase out abruptly at 40 realm holdings, they're a really cool feature.

What checksum do you fine folks have? I got a CTD and thought to check the checksum and mine's YJPW, and according to the Paradox FAQ for Old Gods, it should be SKDF. I've verified cache integrity on Steam and reinstalled and it's still YJPW. All DLCs are ticked in the launcher, and no mods are.

I noticed a few other odd things - I can't built training grounds or housecarl training ground even if I build Castle Walls, which is what the red X is indicating the problem is, but on holdings that started with Castle Walls I can build them fine. And every upgrade just has [Improvement Name] I, II, III, IV etc instead of different names for each level - maybe I've just been spoiled by CK2+ but I could have sworn that different levels of improvements had different names and flavour text for each level in vanilla. Is this happening to you guys as well, or is it just my weirdly-bugged version?

EDIT: As it turns out the contents of the Paradox Interactive folder in My Documents has an effect on checksum.

Based soley on how much fun I've had with this one this afternoon compared to previous ones, I'd say it goes along these lines:

The Old Gods >>>> The Republic > Sword of Islam > Legacy of Rome.

As of a recent patch only family members in your court contribute to max trade posts and take a slice out of your profits, so landing and banishing people will get them out of your hair.

Started as the Boneless, managed to get the Kingdoms of Ireland and Scotland. At the ripe age of 80 I died and my kinslayer son, who I had in prison for half a decade, took over. Didn't last a year before a plot by his nephew came to fruition. Knowing that he wouldn't win the civil war, abdicated to the nephew. The very first thing the (AI) nephew did was conquer Norway. The AI doubled the size of my old realm in a year. Old Gods is pretty good.

The Republic DLC, unfortunately, only unlocks Trade Republics like Venice, Genoa, Pisa, etc. You'll know them by the presence of Patricians within the realm, and of course, their capital being on a coast for access to ships. Everything else is considered a "peasant" republic and cannot be played.

Keep in mind that when you pick a Republic at start, you're picking that Republic for good. You can go up ranks so Venice can become the Empire of Italia, but you cannot move and lose your capital, and you cannot declare independence from your Republic because that turns you into a peasant republic.

If you win a crusade as a patrician you can definitely become a new republic, that was my first republic game as the Most Serene Republic of Jerusalem.

More to the point I think you can split off as a new republic, but all trade republics MUST be Duke level or higher. If you are just a count, or any republic loses their last duke title, they are game overed.

You can also gently caress with console commands or make a mod to make a new republic where you want, just again it would need to be duchy level or higher.

Odd. It looks like (?) you're supposed to be able to capture leaders hiding out in their capital by sacking it, based on the line "is_ruler = yes" in the imprisoning trigger. But even when I turn the chance of a 'nothing happens' to zero, it doesn't capture rulers.

Can your heirs invite themselves into other courts somehow? My heir ended up in the court of his now deceased little brother in some worthless backwater county and I can't invite him back. Now I've lost control of the marriages for all his kids, I can't appoint him to a bisphoric since he isn't in my court, and I don't have the option to plot to assassinate him. Well, raiding is fun and the new norse portraits look great, but I'm 20 years after the start date now and all of france, germany and italy are united (into a country that can't decide on its name), sweden and denmark are united, and britain is united under jorvik, none of which I had anything to do with. Are these countries actually going to collapse at some point, because there's like 500 years left in the game and I want something to happen other than too big to fail countries crushing tiny rebellions.

I had an interesting bug as King of Scotland. I did the old piss off your vassal until he rebels trick to get the duke of Murray in prison. I proceeded to banish him and take the tyranny hit because it is only a matter of time before Lothian decides to back a usurper no matter how high I have their opinion of me. But what is this? The Duke of Murray is not actually gone from my kingdom and is the Earl of Murray county.

It ended up working out since arresting and giving him a second banishment drove Buchanan and Atholl to rebel whom I crushed with the mighty army of Lothian.

The second best part of this game so far is that during the war against the Buchanan and Atholl, Strathearn decides to back my brother for king. As I am about to take the second holding in Atholl, Lothian joins in on the faction so I know I don't have long. The claim is pressed just a day or two after I capture the second holding and I have to give up the kingdom, but before I do I check with the earls I am currently stomping and, miracle of miracles, they are ready to surrender and go to the dungeon. I banish the earl of Buchanon as my last act as regent and 5 days later after the earl of Atholl finally gets in my dungeon I execute him.

That is the tale of how I turned the lovely king of Scotland start into a 4 county demense in northern Scotland. Now to make my plans to make new plans.

Fake update: 2nd bug, after losing the title of king I got to keep my ex-vassals' armies, so now I have 3500 men, totally cost free, and can keep them around until I want to declare war. As of right now I am using them to help Argyll's independence war.
