Install Gentoo posted:usually the cable company will just kill off analog entirely and issue digital cable boxes. bit odd of them to encrypt the analog channels first tho. all analog is dead, every cableco is required to be all-digital now and offer a free lovely set top box for people that don't want better than basic cable last year fcc said "gently caress it, encrypt it all what could go bad about that?!" and because it's encrypted 100% that means you HAVE to have a cablecard to get any channel once the system is put in place further locking you into comcast's craptastic set top boxes unless you do something like a ceton, hd homerun prime or tivo

digital stuff has been encrypted for a while now. like years and years. its not new
|

until the fcc ruled last year it was illegal for telco to encrypt basic cable and all local channels had to be provided 100% unencrypted free of charge
|
# ? May 30, 2013 15:23 |

they've always offered local channels unencrypted. analog cable is going away and being replaced by digital which has been encrypted for years. there isn't really any problem here.
|
# ? May 30, 2013 15:24 |

no, digital cable is not encrypted and they moved a long rear end time ago that's why if you had old rear end boxes you kept seeing commercials for a set top box you HAD to have to get cable it's just an atsc tuner, the same thing in the back of your hdtv atsc does not have to be encrypted the only thing encrypted are premium channels above 99 because before it was illegal to encrypt 1-99 shagger quit being wrong about things gosh

twc has been encrypting everything on digital cable beyond broadcast for like the last 7-8 years. now idk if this was ok because analog cable also existed at the same time or what, but I definitely could not pull unencrypted channels out of the box outside of broadcast when I tried. this was a real docsis cable box tho, not an atsc tuner translating to analog cable. also now days they're much more complex than that and contain onboard switched digital tuners (you know, like that thing you need to hook ur prime up to). even if they decided to send the channels unencrypted (they wont) the tuner in your tv would be useless because it cant do switched digital.

eh youll still be able to record things once decrypted piracy is saved

fox, nbc, abc, etc.. are broadcast, not basic cable. yes those were not encrypted.

altho yeah if they're encrypting broadcast channels that's weird and dumb.
|
# ? May 30, 2013 16:01 |

its not weird and dumb from the cableco view because they can force everyone to get a cable box and then start charging for it as is happening to pagancow. most cablehavers dont realize that ota broadcasts are hd now and some will start paying to preserve their "superior cable experience" its not like local broadcasters put out advertisements to get people to buy rabbit ears. if youve ever wondered what rent-seeking is this is a textbook example

Shaggar posted:altho yeah if they're encrypting broadcast channels that's weird and dumb. Yes. Its what they are doing I only paid for basic cable because it was more reliable than bunny ears for me to watch PBS Now they are encrypting it and giving me a box for 2 years that I will have to pay for after that. its dumb I bet it's a way to squeeze the 17mbps Mpeg-2 into like 8 to make more room for other stuff. basically YVCPOS bithc

also irony alert, the rich man's channel doesn't cost anything because he made the people pay for it lol owned

i hate how telco/radio does encoding sirius downgraded a lot of their less-popular channels to add more poo poo in and on the edm channels it sounds like 128kbps mp3s now

i was housesitting for a friend who had some insane cable package with ~1500 channels and there was nothing on it was all timeshifted 'the view' and ppv porn and the picture looked like garbage and there were multiple levels of black bars on the sides and bottom and everywhere and it was really bad i ended up just watching youtubes and downloaded tv anyway welp thats my story watch 420 pbs on rabbit ears e'ryday hail satan

the extra-lovely thing comcast is doing though is when it went all digital it forced consumers to get those atsc boxes these were given "free" for 2 years now with this change they're charging these people for the new boxes my sister was bitching about how comcast was forcing new boxes that cost money and i was all confused until pagencow bitched today

build your own antenna with this one weird trick made by a single mom! cable companies hate her! http://uhfhdtvantenna.blogspot.ca/ $15 worth of material, only one of which (the coax adapter) was sorta-hard to find. Best goddamn thing I ever did. I can even get the U.S. broadcast of the Super Bowl and see all the Super Bowl commercials you guys keep raving about.

just did a 400 swatch calibration on a 6-bit $120 asus TN panel with an i1 display pro. it looks a lot better. it allows you to select "white LED" as the backlight type and it knows what to do. amazing.
