The TNA Last Rites match is hilarious, the only negative is that they didn't go all the way with it. They should have dimmed the lights, played a casette tape of spooky Halloween noises, had sheet ghosts pop out of the turnbuckles, made Sting put his hand in a bowl of Dracula's brains, etc.

The Dark Canival match from early TNA was great. ISP vs Kid Kash, Glen Gilberti and a third person whom I forget. Was a standard plunder match only every now and then the lights would dim and ISP would start playing over the speakers.

I seem to remember sometime in '99 or 2000 that WCW did some kind of 'Fight Club' match, where the point was to 'so the most damage' or some nebulous criteria. I wasn't actively watching at the time (I actually haven't watched wrestling since '93 or so), and I just happened to catch the match while my father was watching it. I vaguely remember a guy beating another guy inside a boiler room or something. And the announcers kept saying it wasn't about winning, but about doing the most damage. I have no idea how it ended, or if it even did. So am I remembering correctly as this being an actual thing that happened? And if so, why? Who thought that poo poo would be a good idea?

It was a reoccurring thing where Jerry Flynn (not to be confused with Jerry Lynn) would set up shop in the boiler room and fight whoever showed up. I want to say it ended when Meng answered the challenge and demolished him, but I'm probably off.

He lost a couple times, once when The Wall fought without honor and Berlyn interfered (this was part of them turning on each other because The Wall wanted to fight with honor), and once to Tank Abbott. The Block lasted about 2 magical months because Russo had a thing for pushing people with any kind of shoot fighting experience. Once Tank Abbott was brought in he had a new favorite toy and jobbed Lynn out to Tank week after week for a couple months. Thankfully WWE.com realizes how amazing The Block was http://www.wwe.com/videos/jerry-flynn-vs-norman-smiley-the-block-match-nitro-dec-13-1999-26112912

To alleviate the exam season a little bit, I've been watching some random Nitro shows now and then. The last I watched was from early '98, where during a Goldberg match either Brain, Tony or Larry say something to the effect of, "It's as if the fans are getting behind this guy because he's winning matches!". Some might say that's logic that WWE could learn from today... or mayb vince is doing it deliberately to prove wcw wrong EDIT: The above episode, from towards the start of his "going completely mental" heel turn, has what is probably now my favourite Scott Steiner quote: "I hate referees! They're incompetent and they're stupid!". I get another kind of enjoyment out of watching Russo-era shows though and I was wondering if there any in particular that are just so ridiculous that watching them becomes essential for the campy wrestling fan. I last watched the one from after Spring Stampede '00, which wasn't a terrible show (I guess?) though it did have a right doozy of an opening segment where the highlights involved Russo and Jarrett taking time to each tell Jim Ross to kiss their asses, and so many balloons being dropped that the sound of the crowd popping them all actually drowns out the New Blood promos going on in the ring. Also, the Hulkster put Billy Kidman into a dumpster. Hedgehog Pie fucked around with this message at 19:02 on May 31, 2013 |

Give me a "Best of The Block" DVD set complete with Jerry Flynn commentary and interviews I originally typed that as "Jerry Lynn commentary", and decided I would also like that. A bewildered Jerry Lynn, unsure why they want him to do commentary over some Jerry Flyyn WCW action.

Not WCW, but here is the worst cage match ever (the goal is to be the first one out of the cage! Out of a cage that's barely big enough for for one man ): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVaTRP0-ud0 And I unabashedly loved Larry Zbyszko. I miss the day of old school heels like him, Tully Blanchard, Gino Hernandez, etc. It just seems to me that too many heels today seem more concerned with getting the crowd behind them than against them. I can understand that sentiment from their point of view, I guess. If they succeed in making the crowd absolutely despise them, then that's seriously going to cut into their merchandise sales, and who would want to lose such a lucrative income stream?
