Taue's match with Kawada from January '91 is a favorite of mine, because it's a straight up loving streetfight and not something you'd expect to see in AJPW. Rudo Taue is awesome. hunnert car pileup fucked around with this message at 03:11 on May 14, 2013 |

Kobashi (c) vs Misawa - 1/20/1997Ditch posted:This series of matches has come to be known for billions of finishers and nearfalls. The reason why this match is the best of their series isn't because it has the most big moves- it doesn't- but because it has the most STRATEGY. Rather than be a champion who lets his challenger set the pace and 'take his best shot', Kobashi is aggressive and seeks to weaken Misawa. He works over several body parts, including a very unique two-pronged assault during the middle. By the end of the match the strategy is paying dividends, as Misawa struggles far more than he ever had before in trying to put Kobashi away. Some gigantic nearfalls in the final minutes cap off one of the top singles matches in either man's career.

Dave was saying on his podcast today that Terry and Dory Funk used to be the bookers in AJPW despite not speaking Japanese. While I'm sure there was a bilingual front office guy to serve as the go-between, how well did that work out? I easily could see a lot of guys in the locker room having problems with that.

Every puro wrestler is taught to call a match in English, so I can't imagine it'd be too difficult.

The Funks were very respected by the boys. A lot of Japanese wrestlers went through the Funk territory in Texas as part of their seasoning. Also, several wrestlers speak English well or decently, and ref Joe Higuchi is bilingual. That said, it was a rather unusual case.

DDT has a lot of super short-lived stables based on transient ideas and pop culture riffs and sight gags and such. A recent example is several wrestlers randomly deciding to be El Samurai and wear El Samurai masks. One of them had his mask stolen, which led to this: http://i41.tinypic.com/ztl4m.jpg http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o141/JamieOD/msamurai_zps77f785cc.png

Edit: I know, I know, no puro here. But puro covers will be coming eventually. Looking forward to watching the Kobashi show. I don't have it yet and I'm holding off on seeing it until I do. shinsuke nakamura dropped the iwgp ic title in mexico, abdullah kobayashi (and who knows else from BJW) may have hep C, and mutoh may be resigning from AJPW completely after being passed over becoming president. bad news day.

More a matter of Mutoh wrestling so rarely nowadays. On a completely unrelated topic, I'd like to request that any patrons of my media pages please support the cause; annual fundraising goal comes up at the end of the month and I'm short over $200. Which matters given my lack of employment.

Well he's already far far far better than Abby...or Bob Orton for that matter. I remember there was discussions that Hase was chairing with the various groups (and a former PM) after Misawa died about medical regulations for Puro (doc at ringside and some other things), did anything come out of it? I always felt that not having a doctor or EMT is a bad idea...even if its some 200-400 paid event. I mean as we saw with Lawler and I recall something with NJPW having a doc there is worth the cash.

Hase's party lost an election right around that time. As with so many things relating to news from Japan, we lose track of it after the initial story.

Dave was saying in his free show today that not only is Mutoh out of AJPW, but that he may be thinking of starting his own company featuring a bunch of All Japan guys. That's basically the story behind NOAH when Misawa and Kobashi left, right? Wouldn't it probably be a very bad idea to try something like that again in the current climate since All Japan hardly seems hot right now to begin with?

the reports since then say Mutoh is looking to buy AJPW stock back from the new owners Speed Partners who are apparently not eager about owning it anyway, and if not he will leave and probably be followed by a couple of others and may make his own promotion. also Koba's hep c test came back negative. he said he had positive news to report when he announced it which is a good way to word it. e: and enuhito just posted an article with Mutoh in the last 5 min, he's out http://blog.livedoor.jp/hbkidcool/archives/51905929.html highlight: quote:Shiraishi wants to do MMA. But I said to him "Pro-wrestling is not MMA". He also said "I want to get The Rock".
