It bothers me that most people color grade at 2.2 and dont check to see if they are too dark at 2.4 the way it's suposed to be monitored....

quicktime 7 has a "final cut pro compatibility" switch because FCP 7 and QT 7 render gamma differently

.mp4 is different enough that if you tried to open it up using quicktime methods it wouldn't work right.

Yes they still have moov atoms and have multiple streams, but the only legal thing to pack in there is mpeg-4 video variants and AAC audio.

it solves a lot of issues with having a mega container that can do everything.

also it helps that it wasn't designed with compatibility with 1994 hardware in mind.

well yeah like i said, call it mov 2.0 if you will (don't call it that)

apple basically just made mov suck a little less and gave it a new name. for the most part unless its got some weird codec or something that one of them doesn't support you cam rename a .mp4 to .mov or vice versa and it'll work

it works because the extension means nothing since there were 3 or 4 of them floating around. Anything that supports SO/IEC 14496-12:200X, ISO/IEC 15444-12:200X will check the headers to see if it's one of those files.

isn't there an official way to put AC3 in MPEG 4 containers now?

Note: QuickTime or any QT based application will not be able to play a MP4 file with AAC/Subtitles, unless it has the extension ".m4v"

I don't think it was ever "officially" added since Apple was the only one using it to deliver 5.1 audio in itunes rentals (because lol they don't support 5.1 AAC in any of their hardware), but I can't find any written evidence that it's not.

thats not true

like 80% of my mp4 files have 5.1 aac audio and subtitle tracks, they just have to be added as sbtl and i don't think you have to do anything special for the audio
