I agree with a lot of this post. I'm not gonna continue the argument because I'd rather not get my rear end probated for 3 days, but whatever. I think it's something to recognize that these conversations couldn't have happened 10 years ago or even 5 years ago, the landscape and soundscape of rap is changing. It brings in a lot of questions and discussion.

In regards to the Mac Miller song, I agree with that too. There's something about his voice rapping that really annoys me, but I kinda dig this and a lot of that is definitely The Internet's production. Same thing with Guild. I dig his verse alright, but a big part of that is it doesn't have the standard Mac Miller voice.

I've actually enjoyed his solo work more than his stuff with mellowhype. After OF started getting big it always seemed on the mellowhype albums he was trying to copy Tyler. That being said, I will say his solo stuff is typically a bit more "restrained" (I wouldn't exactly call it boring, although I don't think that's necessarily unfair).

edit-more importantly, going to download the new hodgy i saw that there's a new jet age of tomorrow tape. I saw Shabazz Palaces mentioned earlier, Jet Age Of Tomorrow has a somewhat similar vibe although usually more ambient and not as abrasive.

Also I remember some dude's here were into the post-hyphy stuff that's been coming out, supposedly this week DJ Mustard's "Ketchup" and Iamsu!'s "Kilt II" are scheduled to drop

i really enjoyed his energy on past mellowhype tracks like 64 and 50. you're right about his current mellowhype stuff being a pale tyler imitation (Numbers is terrible). his solo work generally has really nice production but i just think this calm relaxed style he's trying to pull off doesn't suit him and he just comes off as sounding bored and lifeless.

I'm pretty sure it is well known fact that aside from a small percentage of UK rap, due to it's roots in the English language (hence the ability to make two words match ie rhyme), rap from nearly every country aside from the US is automatically disqualified as being "good". There are a few rare exceptions, which while they exist, are seldom or never heard by nearly anyone. Occasionally people in this thread try to pass off some third world Necro knockoff (usually clad in FUBU and standing on a pedestrian overpass for thier country's only interstate highway) but the music, while reminiscent of a bygone era still fails to hold up to the most flippant scrutiny. There is admittedly a tiny existent rare gem here and there, but I'm ok with the statistically accurate statement: "There is no good foreign rap."

I used to like big krit but didn't really pay much attention to him, but in the last month after his latest mixtape dropped I liked it so much I went back and listened to everything he's put out and now he's my favorite rapper. So my question is, why isn't he way bigger? Like at least kendrick lamar (who I can't stand) level? Maybe I'm missing something since I'm not american, but how come kendrick made it and krit didn't?

I know you're trying to be ironic with that post, but most non-american non-english language hip hop is aimed at the local audience of that rapper and it would be stupid to expect americans or other foreigners to like it. Like I'm from eastern europe where rap is way more popular than in western europe and here if you throw 3 bricks into a crowd you're gonna hit at least 1 aspiring rapper, so growing up I had to listen to a lot of local rap and even liked some of it but I'd never expect a foreigner to like this poo poo.

For example, this is my favorite local rap group and they have a lot of songs I like but there's no way an american or whatever is gonna like it even if they somehow understand the lyrics, since it's not for them

That's a dumb argument, you could say the same thing about foreign movies/art/books/other music (like house) being marketed towards locals and yet somehow there's a ton of good foreign stuff in all those categories that Americans like, but all the foreign rap I've ever heard is almost unequivocally garbage. Non-north americans are just really bad at making rap.

To the first the reason Krit isn't more popular is because he's simply not that good. I mean, he's nice but he's not like "wow". His production is really nice, but he's gotten worse as a rapper every album since his first. I give him credit for "krit wuz here" because it took a lot of the common southern/texas style poo poo, but went about it from the perspective of someone trying to avoid all the thug poo poo rather than someone in it. It was just a regular dude who's trying to do good, but due to environment keeps getting dragged back in. He got a little fame and lost that and pretty much just became some generic knockoff of his influences afterwards. Also Kendrick doesn't produce but he's 1000x the rapper Krit is.

And as for the second the problem with most foreign rap isn't all that stuff you said-it's that it's garbage. It sounds like whatever was popular in the US 5 years ago, with the addition of having dudes who can't rap whatsoever. It's not aimed at a local audience any more than Gucci, Keef, Kendrick, Eminem, Scarface, E-40, Max B, or any other rapper from the US who drops "local" stuff in their rhymes is. The difference is 99.97% of foreign stuff is just a knockoff of some US dude, only much much worse. That's one of the reasons I really respect a lot of Grime dudes-it's actually something different than US rap.

Yeah I missed this post too. Do you listen to rap music or just watch the videos with the sound off? Riff Raff has no loving character and I suggest starting up a new thread for all you Riff Raff fans because he's the worst thing to come out of rap ever. Since this whole discussion started on the guy I went back and got some of his poo poo together and listened to it. IT'S A LOAD OF CRAP. One or two songs might work here or there but it's not "fun" as you keep saying and its not clever. I have no idea why he's so popular other than the color of his skin. I mean sure you might like his crappy music the same way teenage girls like One Direction but don't for a second tell me that his music is good.

Go listen to Action Bronson and krit, you'll probably need to print out the lyrics or something because you're obviously not able to listen to them without concentrating real hard. The reason why people like them is because of their ability to put words together and deliver them in a way that none of us are able to do. It's got less to do with their character or personality because that poo poo only goes so far after you've been listening to a person's discography for the past week.

Furthermore, I didn't even understand what Alan posted but he certainly made you all look like a bunch of idiots. Stop arguing with him unless you understand the issue at hand because its hella boring for the rest of us to watch.

This post seems so unnecessarily hostile. Why are you so mad about what people listen to? Why are you commenting about race relations in a country you don't even live in? Why are you unironically using the word "hella"?
