For some reason*, the Barbaras' "Summertime Road" sprang instantly to mind. It's extremely lo-fi, but extremely catchy:

*Actually, I guess the reason is obvious. Summertime road trip --> summertime road. Not the biggest associative leap.

e: That was the first to spring to mind, but the first one *should* have been the Modern Lovers' "Roadrunner":

Does anyone here know dreampop bands similar to The Bilinda Butchers? I'm mostly looking for stuff similar to the tracks on Goodbyes, like hai bby and half open.

If not, does anyone have any suggestions for someone who's crazy about Beach House, Grimes, and M83?

Edit: Might as well add... What albums should I listen to if I like contemporary classical pieces, like the tracks on The Blue Notebooks by Max Richter or on Philip Glass's soundtracks for The Hours and The Truman Show?

I'm currently in love with Lovage - are there any bands / albums that sound similarly? I've listened to the members' separate projects, and while I like the ambience of Elysian Fields or trip-hop of the Dan the Automator, I think it's the sensual vocals that make it most for me. I think if Peeping Tom had more female vocals, maybe that would be it? Anyhow, the highlights for me are Loveboat and Pitstop, but in general I think it's a solid album through and through, so... any recommendations?

And a second request - anything that sounds similar to With Joyful Lips (preferably something that sounds like this: Melatonin)? I'm impressed by the album and enjoy the general feel of it (fascination with sleep/death + ambience/electronica + sampling). His music reminds me most of Portico Quartet, Ori, but in general I'd say - any relaxing music, with lots of sampling going on, that's not making you sleepy.

Anybody remember the too-cool-for-school band Test Icicles that people claimed were founded as a joke and allegedly disbanded because they hated their own music? Well, I dig their stuff, and want more like it. I've checked out a lot of Last.fm similar bands (Help She Cant Swim, Bolt Action Five, Trash Fashion, Glamour For Better) but they all sound like pretty standard brit-rock ala Arctic Monkeys. I miss the rawness and despair of their sound. The only similar band I can think of is The Blood Brothers (whom I also dig). Any tips?

I'd say you should check out Asobi Seksu. Good dreampop that can be a little shoegaze-y at times, which seems to be what you want.

Self-titled and Citrus are pretty strong shoegaze records with dreampop. Hush is pretty much straight up dreampop, Fluorescence is more of an even mixture.

They are all solid, but most will tell you to listen to Citrus.

can anyone recommend any down- to midtempo more thoughtful semi-ambient stuff (like reality harshness condenser)

I guessin the same field as mellow Tipper, Bonobo etc

(I really like the Surrounded and Broken Soul Jamboree albums)

Also everyone should donate to Dave with paypal openheartdave@gmail.com to cover his medical costs

or you can buy his revamped VIP release at addictech to further assist

Dream Poppy - Youth Lagoon (probably already know), Young Wonder, Silver Swans
Ambiancey Pop - Jon Hopkins
Ambiancey/Spacey Post Rock - This Will Destroy You, Helios,

I find all of these are usually in the same taste range, hopefully someone you'll like is in there.

What's similar to M83's most recent album (Hurry Up We're Dreaming) with the vocal tunes like Midnight City and Steve McQueen? Or older songs like Up !, Teen Angst, or Moonchild.

Try out Young Wonder first, wouldn't say they're exactly the same, but similar, sort of uplifting but chill pop. They're the most similar out of that list I'd say, but honestly would recommend you at least try all of those guys at some point.

Is there any post-hardcore out there with instrumentation (specifically guitar-playing) like the Fall of Troy? I'm a pretty big fan of post-hardcore as well as "mathcore"/spastic hardcore and metalcore a la the Dillinger Escape Plan. But I've yet to find a band that marries the two styles the way TFOT does.

The closest I can think of is probably The Number 12 Looks Like You. Also maybe Dance Gavin Dance or Alexisonfire, but I don't really listen to them so I'm less confident in the recommendation. Tom just joined the band Chiodos on guitar so probably be on the lookout for new material from them.

Even though they're quite a bit softer than Fall of Troy, I feel like I have to mention Faraquet, probably my favorite post-hardcore band. Their complex guitar work reminds me of Fall of Troy for sure.

Check out a polish band called moja adrenalina. They have a soundcloud page > http ://soundcloud.com/moja-adrenalina They've taken down my favourite song off the soundcloud page from the first album but I love them, it's spastic as hell and sounds like the Grover from sesame street has made a band with Animal and they're loving awesome.

I have, and I'm not really a fan outside of Violent Waves.

I'm also wondering if there's any modern hardcore with notable lead guitar playing. I love stuff like Defeater and Modern Life is War that's really focused on impassioned vocals, but instrumentally those bands always seem to keep it pretty simple besides maybe the drums. Same goes for screamo. Any bands that combine the emotional intensity of those bands with guitar heroics?
