French left wing antifascist militant Clement Meric (age 19) was attacked and killed in Paris yesterday by members of the far right (not sure which group yet), who had Nazi tattoos and apparently a Front National t-shirt. There's a march in his honor and against fascist violence in Paris this evening. The Left Party, the French Communist Party and the Young Socialists are calling for the dissolution of these fascist movements. I know this will be probably an upopular feeling right now but if you go around shouting about how you want to kill all the facists, then go and bash them, are you honestly expecting some other response in reply? All the reports seem to be saying it wasn't 6 people jumping him, it was 2 groups of people having a grand old barney.

Fascist ideology is literally based on political violence, it doesn't matter if you've never even said a bad word about the fash, you're still liable to get beaten up if you're part of a target group. Thus talking as if somebody had it coming because they were antifa is pretty absurd. Sure, anti-fascist activism might make you a target sooner, but being a leftist will just make you a target later anyway.

You smash them in the streets and expose them for what they are, you don't make them a loving cup of tea.

I find I never have much say in what happens at anti-fascist protests anyway. The SWP show up, never let anyone else speak, run to the front and cover everything with their posters and take over the whole show from start to finish. We had a wee SWP guy who borrowed a megaphone off a pro-Palestine group (and never shared it ) who'd start his own chants or sing a song over whatever everyone else was already saying or chanting. Including "Tupac was a Muslim" (he wasn't) on seeing an SDL kid wearing a Tupac T-shirt. Presumably the kid didn't have any actual black friends to invite along to show he wasn't a racist, honest guv. We saw a few known Combat 18 members there with him and a few Nazi salutes, maybe he was really just an Islamophobe and was actually surprised his movement was racist. Still, they help make up the numbers and they'll probably grow out of it and join a decent left-wing cause when they see what their party gets up to.
