if i remember right when they were first planning a new trek series in the 70s they were going to have little one-man transporter pads on the bridge and in sickbay

i think with those they figured the bulky equipment would still be at the transporter room and the bridge/sickbay pads would basically be like extra pad space directly connected via a long extension cable or something like that

Started reading Consider Phlebas on audiobook since I'm getting laser eye surgery on thursday. Great narrator, and drat the story and writing is good. It's a shame Iain Banks died.

i was looking at the website for one of those cutting-edge artificial hands the other day, the kind that you train to read your nerve endings, and it had a downloadable manual for it

that's what really struck me, we have science fiction devices that we can download the manuals for. that's one of those things that we do all the time for mundane technology, but we never thought about doing for sf stuff. it's like how in all of the various sf stories about a moon landing, not one of them had it shown on live television back on earth
