thunderspanks posted:Holy poo poo, the same libertarian douche I've been posting for the last few weeks has finally hit critical mass: People who unironically recommend Ayn Rand to friends are the worst kind of person. Atlas Shrugged is quite possibly the worst book I've ever read, and the only one I've actually abused. One's opinion is their own, but that poo poo is over the line.

Really Ayn Rand is a terrible author. I mean there has to be authors with just a lovely philosophy who can actually write. The best thing to do is recommend Ayn Rand, then after someone has tortured themselves with it, tell them about how Rand basically backpedaled on her philosophy when old when she needed Medicare and Social Security to like, live. Then recommend Milton Friedman, then later inform them on how Freidman also was in favor of a guaranteed minimum income. Every conservative hero is basically a bleeding red socialist in some regard that always gets ignored.

So libertarians are just showing off signs of stockholm syndrome after reading through Atlas Shrugged? It all makes sense now.

Adam Smith wanted heavy regulations on the free market to prevent capitalists from exploiting their labourers. Also, my favourite thing about Ayn Rand is that because she's such a terrible author (not even making a judgement on her terrible philosophies here, just pointing out that she's objectively an awful writer), she wouldn't even be part of the elites she worships, because she was never one of the world's best authors. If the world's top 1% of every profession went Galt and vanished, Ayn Rand would be left to starve (supposedly) with the rest of us, because she was nowhere near the top 1% of authors in terms of writing skill. Once you realize that, you realize just how sad a person she is, worshipping a bunch of rich and 'talented' people who she could never be a part of because she lacked both the wealth and the talent. Also, she worshipped a psychopathic serial killer, so there's that.

vyelkin posted:Also, she worshipped a psychopathic serial killer, so there's that. This came up in the scary Wikipedia article thread awhile back. This guy literally put a dead girl's body back together after he'd dismembered it, including using wires to hold her eyes open, in order to trick her father and collect ransom money. He then threw her head and torso out of his car for her father to discover. Any Rand called him an "amazing picture of a man" because of his lack of regard for other human beings.

You're obviously going to get hungry if you are collecting enough tissue samples to fill up 2700 petri dishes. But look on the bright side, the $1050 you just spent earned you worth of sweet pizza!

Strudel Man posted:Testosterone is a steroid. So are many hormones in your body. Any hormone derived from cholesterol is by definition a (chole)steroid hormone. The colloquial term "steroids" is meant to be equivalent to "synthetic anabolic steroids." You can't get as swole as the dude in that pic with natural test, even if you inject it. You'll gain some muscle, sure, but you'll also retain a ton of water and suffer a bunch of other side effects without the bighuge muscle mass growth. That's why 'roid guys inject synthetics, dianabol and winstrol and so forth. Beyond that one of the points of having Big Pharma control preparation is that FDA regulations can exert their control over proper dosing, handling, and quality assurance.

I ended up getting into a facebook argument with a conspiracy theorist, I didn't actually think anyone on my friends list believed in this bullshit when I posted the article. For context Hamilton in NZ recently banned fluoride from it's drinking water and the group that was behind it is trying to do the same to my city now. swampland has a new favorite as of 00:12 on Jun 12, 2013 |

That tactic works on me every time too. "Oh, you have your 'science' and 'logic' and whatever, but here, why don't you just keep an open mind and watch this youtube video by a nutcase (duration: 3:41:58)?" No. Jesus.

I've never seen one with THAT theme though, got to admit.

It's also a community segregation issue - I get a lot of people on my Facebook feed (usually friends of friends) complaining about women in burqua, but they've never been anywhere it'd be likely to be common.
