Just had a Stillwater Existant, it was wholly unremarkable. I wish Cellar Door was in 4-packs, that's one I'd buy. I am going to be driving from Florida up to Bar Harbor, Maine by way of Raleigh area as well as NYC and others next week. Anything really noteworthy along the way up to Raleigh I should know about? I'm familiar with the NYC scene, will probably just hit up Torst as I'm only gonna have a day or so there. Hoping to hit up Ebnezers while I'm in Maine.

I don't know how the gently caress we survived the relentless assault in the first OT but at least it gave me time to make some marinade and get my jerky soaking. Added some storm king to a smaller batch. Will report back with results. Voting love child for next bottle to be popped. Parabola is a good choice though. Finally tried some at haymarket during ccbw and daaaaaaamn.

Trip report on the Parabolove- This is not a good thing. Parabola bitterness rules the glass, completely negating the funk and tartness of the LC3. Unfortunately, the funk and tart cancels out the subtle sweetness of the Parabola. You get a tiny hint of acetic character at the end, but the previous bitterness makes it taste like pennies and cider vinegar. Don't do this. Don't mix great beers unless it's a proven style mix. Luckily, I still have 80% of a Parabola to mend my spirits. Also, did FW stop putting the infosheet in Parabola? I had 4 last year and all had them, but I'm 0-2 so far this year. I always liked reading the barrel notes.

After having Kona Big Wave and Sam Adams Double Agent, I'm really keen on beers that are heavily aroma hopped but mild on bitter and flavor hops. Does anybody have a beer in that scheme of things they'd recommend to me? Something about catching hop power on the nose only and then getting a mouthfeel you can enjoy in full blast summer heat really attracts me.

Its hard to find, and only on tap...in Florida...sometimes...but White Peach Jai Alai is the best smelling beer I have ever had. Its delicious too and the peach and hops somehow cancel each other out, so it more like a pale ale with peach undertones. I once carried around a glass for almost an hour at a beer festival just sniffing it it smells so good.

I'm bringing about 3 gallons of thai tea to work tomorrow, and because blending is the theme of the night I think I'm going to run off 1/3 of a pint of the tea (in its final form, not the hot-brewed tea itself) and combine it with 2/3rds of a pint of my Kern River Citra homebrew clone. I'm expecting godawful things, but I'll drink anything once so I'll make sure to report back. Unfortunately that goddamn hockey game made me wait to brew all this tea, being done one household coffee maker carafe at a time, so it might be a while.

Started bartending tonight, and my trainer said "make sure you try every beer on tap so you can accurately describe them to the customer". We were having a Goose Island tap takeover, and I hadn't tried about 3/4 of the beers, so I had about ten 2 oz samples. Got to try Sofie Paradisi a few times, and it was absolutely wonderful. I felt it had lost a bit of the saison-ness (I don't really know how else to put it), but was still a wonderful beer. Goose Island 25th Anniversary is a really good ESB, and I enjoy it a million times more than Honkers ale. GI The Illinois was pretty good, although I have to say I enjoyed the aroma much more than I enjoyed the taste. Night Stalker was really delicious, and one of the hoppier RISs I've ever tried. Big John tasted like soy sauce. Madame Rose was good, but tasting it side-by-side with Lolita is a bit of a let down. I find Lolita to be much more tart, and I don't really like cherries that much, whereas I love raspberries. e: Oh yeah, has anyone tried the new Revolution, Firestone Walker collab? We just got it into the shop, and I snagged a bottle. Looking forward to trying it, but I don't really feel like drinking it tonight after drinking so many beers tonight at work, my palate needs a rest. Captain Shortbus posted:I'll wait. So here's the deal, I'm probably being way too optimistic about the possibilities, but beneath the garbage I just drank was a layer of potential. I'm afraid I'm conflating the skunk weed nose on the tea with what works great in those like-scented IPAs, and I'm failing to address the fact that what makes my thai iced tea so good is the balance of sweetness from the brown sugar and creaminess of the half & half alongside the pungent tea flavor. I'd addressed this in the homebrew thread, but this kinda confirms it, that if it's going to play a part in a great beer, it's going to be in a milk stout or something along those lines.

If you're going through Richmond, VA (which I imagine you would be since 95 literally goes right through it) you owe it to yourself to stop at Mekong Restaurant. It was voted #1 Craft Beer Bar in America, has a ridiculous number of taps, insane randalls, and a good stash of bottles. The food is excellent, too. Keep an eye on Mekong's Trinkin page for an idea of what they'll have on tap when you make it through town. You should also try to hit some of the breweries that are right off 95 like Hardywood and Strangeways. If you plan on making a day of it you can check out Trinkin to get an idea of what the city's bars and restaurants are offering. I highly recommend Popkin Tavern for good food and good beer. Also, I love having Trinkin. Do any other cities have anything like it?

I lucked out yesterday and wandered into my bottle shop and found that they had just received Something Hoppy Comes This Way having just been delivered by their shitbox astrovan a few hours ago. According to the driver, the stuff had been bottled that morning. Picked up two, popped one open last night. Very very juicy and floral but otherwise pretty easy to drink. I still think Citra Ninja is their best DIPA by far though. Even cooler though, I was talking with the beer buyer and lamenting that it's very difficult to find Pipeworks stuff. He pulled out a Marilime Law that they had stashed away behind the counter from the last delivery and let me have it. I plan on saving that one for my next bottle share for sure. According to him, they are doing a very small batch of Orange Truffle Abduction and part of the reason why they don't announce deliveries anymore is to give people a chance at grabbing it. Frankly, I think that logic is garbage but whatever. Compusaurus fucked around with this message at 15:13 on Jun 13, 2013 |

Last night I said what the hell, I've got a few hours to myself to drink a beer and chill out so lets go big. The Bruery Cuir, 2011 Anno beer The first thing I notice on pouring this beer is how light amber/red colored it is in small amounts, though once it fills the glass it looks quite dark. Nice carbonation level, it really lets the aroma take off. The aroma is predominately dark caramel/toffee and tart apple, brandy, creme brulee, and a touch of tobacco. The flavor follows very closely, the tartness that stuck out a lot when the beer was brand new has integrated with the rest of the flavors quite nicely. Its overall character is reminiscent of cognac, with some dark toffee and tobacco giving additional complexity. The creme brulee notes peek out again in the finish with a bit of brandy. I don't remember how much of Cuir was bourbon barrel aged but the typical flavors you would expect from such a process are fairly absent. In typical Bruery style, this beer is relatively dry and lighter on the palate than its ABV would imply, its very rich but not super thick and sticky so it doesn't fatigue the palate. The amount of the Bruery-house-special candi syrup along with the long fermentation time from the solera process no doubt has a large effect on this. The long fermentation time and bottle age have turned this into a very smooth 14.5% ABV. I've had much lower ABV beers that had much harsher alcohols, there are no fusels, nail polish, etc to speak of. The beer does taste well aged but there are still no signs of this beer getting old, so it is probably good to age for many more years. I've not had any of my Fruet or Bois yet, but it is interesting to see how different Cuir is from what I remember of Coton and Papier. I'm not sure where the solera process for this beer is going to take it, along with the changing of the barrel composition, but I have to admit its a success and it makes me glad to buy and age these beers.

This is the "normal" Cuir version which was blended with some from barrels. The 100% BA version was iirc 100% from bourbon barrels. Its dry for the ABV, meaning its attenuation is relatively high. Its still a big rear end loving beer.

So about that trip to the Portland Fruit Beer Fest the previous weekend. Mr. Crooked Stave was there and WWBV was indeed pretty epic. There were around 18 or 20 other fruit beers, mostly from around OR, and there weren't any stand-out awful ones. But man there is no way I'm dealing with this event again. The entire locale was balls-to-balls crowded, and you had to jostle your way around like you were in Tokyo to get anyplace. The only activity of note to do there was stand in line and listen to the awful DJ bust out hip-hop hits from the '90s like you were at your cousin's wedding. That, and no shade. Forget that stuff. I should've just spent the equivalent amount of money a few blocks south at the Cascade and been happier. Better news for Portland is that Crux was doing events around town, debuting their bottle line and offering their BBA imp. stout called Tough Love on tap; quite good and not enough OR breweries do something like this too regularly. Another brewery called de Garde were also doing their semi-launch in Portland, and this joint, man; they're pretty neato. It's run by a man named Trevor from Tillamook who decided to go all wild-fermentation and even though this is the first time he's professionally brewed, he must have some kind of beginners-luck beermaking power because his stuff ranges from curiously interesting to really excellent. On the low end is the "Bu Weisse" which is 2.1% basically a huge sour bomb, and on the high end there is "Loak" which is a 11.7% BBA dark ale. In between is all kinds of random aged and fruit-infused stuff, and most of it really kicked rear end. And also Apex was serving beer from Alpine for the first time ever. And some random guy at The Commons let me have a swig from the bottle of DIPA he got from Hill Farmstead. Saturday in Portland.
