Anybody know of any good music with steel drums that isn't super calypsoey? I'm thinking of stuff like The Knife - Pass this On or the Commando and 48 Hours soundtracks.

I follow this dude/guy on tumblr, and while I don't know him I think his ambient music is loving off the CROOK. Don't know what that sentence means either. But I'm high on benzo and ambien and listening to some loving sheen of a soundscape here. (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

Does anyone here know dreampop bands similar to The Bilinda Butchers? I'm mostly looking for stuff similar to the tracks on Goodbyes, like hai bby and half open. If not, does anyone have any suggestions for someone who's crazy about Beach House, Grimes, and M83? Edit: Might as well add... What albums should I listen to if I like contemporary classical pieces, like the tracks on The Blue Notebooks by Max Richter or on Philip Glass's soundtracks for The Hours and The Truman Show? I'm currently in love with Lovage - are there any bands / albums that sound similarly? I've listened to the members' separate projects, and while I like the ambience of Elysian Fields or trip-hop of the Dan the Automator, I think it's the sensual vocals that make it most for me. I think if Peeping Tom had more female vocals, maybe that would be it? Anyhow, the highlights for me are Loveboat and Pitstop, but in general I think it's a solid album through and through, so... any recommendations? And a second request - anything that sounds similar to With Joyful Lips (preferably something that sounds like this: Melatonin)? I'm impressed by the album and enjoy the general feel of it (fascination with sleep/death + ambience/electronica + sampling). His music reminds me most of Portico Quartet, Ori, but in general I'd say - any relaxing music, with lots of sampling going on, that's not making you sleepy.

Anybody remember the too-cool-for-school band Test Icicles that people claimed were founded as a joke and allegedly disbanded because they hated their own music? Well, I dig their stuff, and want more like it. I've checked out a lot of Last.fm similar bands (Help She Cant Swim, Bolt Action Five, Trash Fashion, Glamour For Better) but they all sound like pretty standard brit-rock ala Arctic Monkeys. I miss the rawness and despair of their sound. The only similar band I can think of is The Blood Brothers (whom I also dig). Any tips? Self-titled and Citrus are pretty strong shoegaze records with dreampop. Hush is pretty much straight up dreampop, Fluorescence is more of an even mixture. They are all solid, but most will tell you to listen to Citrus.

On the back of asking for dark orchestral music, can anyone recommend me any piano concertos or violin music/quartets etc that are sad, depressing, slow, moody etc? A friend of mine showed me a violin quartet piece a few years agothat was from around the WWII era, really sad eerie stuff. I would love to find more like it, (I can't remember the name of the piece he showed me)

Is there any post-hardcore out there with instrumentation (specifically guitar-playing) like the Fall of Troy? I'm a pretty big fan of post-hardcore as well as "mathcore"/spastic hardcore and metalcore a la the Dillinger Escape Plan. But I've yet to find a band that marries the two styles the way TFOT does. I already know Just Like Vinyl.

The closest I can think of is probably The Number 12 Looks Like You. Also maybe Dance Gavin Dance or Alexisonfire, but I don't really listen to them so I'm less confident in the recommendation. Tom just joined the band Chiodos on guitar so probably be on the lookout for new material from them. Even though they're quite a bit softer than Fall of Troy, I feel like I have to mention Faraquet, probably my favorite post-hardcore band. Their complex guitar work reminds me of Fall of Troy for sure.
