I got to see them film the Cuba Gooding Jr coin toss. We were at a Calgary Stampeders CFL game, and the game started with two totally different teams coming on to the feild, Cuba Gooding Jr popping out of nowhere to do the coin toss, and then yelling "Show me the money" over the stadium audio system. We ended up seeing the movie opening night just to see if we were in it. We weren't.

I don't know what else to say other than that. The problem with documentaries is that sometimes life doesn't give you satisfying answers and this movie just leaves as much unclear as it does answer (through no real fault of it's own). Also really slickly made without actually getting in the way too much (a problem many slickly made docs have). I guess I did have a few other things to say.

If you like documentaries about criminals but without perfect documentary slickness, instead favoring an insight/cheese combo, check out John DiMaggio ham it the gently caress up in Carl Panzram: The Spirit of Hatred and Revenge. The movie was shot 1.37:1, but the studio with the blessing of the director's son have backed 1.66:1 in that tired jackassey fight against pillarboxing they always get into. It sorta sucks but I don't really think it's a very big deal, the headroom gets a little tight in some shots but the framing's never really ruined.

I disagree on a few levels. On a basic plot level Tommy needs to be defeated to truly let go of the past. He's spent his whole life just fighting his past and he needs to be shown that that won't work. If Tommy had won, he would have taken the money and never looked back. Brenden needs to win. There's also no way Brendan won't help Tommy with his problems while Tommy wouldn't care if Brenden lost his house.

On a more broad level the movie really sets up Tommy as a villain and Brenden as the lovable underdog. Tommy has underdog characteristics and the things he's fighting for are legit but on a broad level he is shown as being the terrifying, silent rear end in a top hat that knocks people out in one punch leaving them half dead. Without all the backstory, he'd be the villain but the beautiful thing about Warrior is it gives us that backstory so we feel more conflicted.

The only thing that really bothers me in Warrior (and this might seem silly), is that Brendan's wife shows up to support him. She's really right in the movie at pretty much every point and when she gives him that speech before he leaves it really feels like him doing this is hurting her but that's just kind of forgotten because he's winning so all that subtext and all that emotional stuff just gets thrown out the window so she can support him. It just felt like they took a shortcut there.

If you want to watch a movie that is visually pretty and full of style, action and music but has very little in the way of substance otherwise, watch "Streets of Fire". It's basically a very stylish comic book set to film.

If you want an idea of what to expect, the movie poster pretty much conveys what the film will be like, a Google Image Search on the title will also pretty much show you what you'll be getting.

It's like Johnny To intentionally tried to make a lovely Wong Jing movie. It's ugly, the cinematography and editing doesn't let the choreography feature at all, the humor doesn't work, and I was so bored I was falling asleep. I really found very little to like.

What makes Wheels on Meals great is what The Heroic Trio is sorely lacking. Take the Jackie Chan/Benny Urquidez fight, for example -- aside from having great choreography that you can see clearly, it has room to breathe, it develops, it tells a story. There's a psychology to it. The Heroic Trio is just constant dizzying motion with zero attention span. It's all flash, no substance.

To clarify, the original 1953 release was cropped to 1.66:1 with George Stevens' blessing, even though it was shot for 1.37:1. His son supervised a new transfer that adjusts the 1.66:1 framing from the theatrical release shot-by-shot instead of a static center crop as in 1953. This is mainly for showing on TV and theaters as an alternative to a straight 16x9 crop or pillarboxing 1.37:1 (which isn't acceptable on some channels).

The Blu-Ray will be the 1.37:1 version.

I felt bad actually for not getting some parts because there was a lot I picked up on but did not put it together. I've always had some isssues with auditory information retention and also with "getting" things that are implied but not explicitly stated.
Anyone know any good movies on the flix that rely on an attentive and intelligent audience and have a plot that is not predictable (if it's predictable or cliche'd I probably will pick up on those and predict things based on them instead of more human things)

The best scene involves Van Damme fighting a woman wearing a Pittsburgh Penguins mascot suit in a kitchen.
