The serialized manga industry is notoriously volatile and most new series will get shitcanned immediately if they underperform. Putting as much work into the story/universe as this guy did before the first chapter was published was a major gamble on his own skills and the sustained interest of his audience, especially considering that this was his first publication and his drawing skills are unusually weak. Worked out obviously, dude's moved ~20 million copies of the ten manga volumes so far.

Fair shout, I forget how up in the air the manga industry is.

Reading comprehension is key! Filler isn't necessarily bad(a lot of people who watch the One Piece anime consider the G8 filler arc great), however, those two scenes are indeed filler, even if you think they're good, and that was what the list was of!

Filler is padding to fill the runtime or what have you. Something like Rico's speech in this episode. A five second sequence is not filler. Just because its not in the manga doesn't make it filler.

I enjoyed everything about the show up until the Eren is a titan reveal. It didn't bother me that Eren turned out to be a kid with a crazy superpower (well it did a little bit, it's a common trope after all). What bothered me was that he was brought back to life after he was killed. It took away all the impact that his death had and suddenly made me less interested.

I too agree that that the quality of the pacing has dramatically fallen, especially when the characters spent a whole half an episode sitting inside a ribcage debating about what to do next. I'm not going to abandon the show just yet based on the last three episodes, but if those episodes seem to set the precedent for a future trend of pointless padding and filler and you expect me to just "hang in there" I don't know what to tell you. I've been burned before. I'm looking at you, every shonen jump anime ever.

To be fair, after watching Tengen Toppa I pretty much think everything else is going to fall short in terms of pacing and crazy escalating action.

Also wasn't the episode of the kids at boot camp pretty much a filler episode? That wasn't a bad filler. I hadn't read the manga at that point and it didn't cross my mind that it was a filler episode. I think it actually contributed something to the plot because a few of those characters you are introduced to get killed later on.

The manga is enjoyable every step of the way, but that's no guarantee that the rest of the anime will live up to it. We've got eight great episodes in a row and three middling episodes in a row.

I imagine if the next episode doesn't step up its game, some viewers will start to abandon the series. People don't have time for mediocrity; give us the great stuff we know you have.

The bootcamp episodes are flashbacks done in the manga after this arc is over. Instead of Introduction -> Battle of Trost -> Flashback of Bootcamp we got Introduction -> Bootcamp -> Battle of Trost.

We're all clear that he never actually died, right? He managed to bust out before drowning in the titan's digestive juices.

As a manga-reader, I can say that if you stick with the anime, you'll get hooked on the plot twists. The next big one won't be for a while though, so if you're easily bored, just stop watching I guess. If you're looking for an anime that breaks free of all the tropes and does something new and unique, I guess I'd say again, stop watching.
As far as the side characters without screen time go, a lot of them do a lot of stuff later and we see less of the terrific three all the time.

TTGL wasn't perfect either. There were slow-pacing issues from episodes 4-6 and 9-11. The rest was pretty absurd(ly well done) though.

They've been really slow at talking about it, I mean we're about halfway in and they finally acknowledged that it might be important and we should probably get around to taking a look at it someday maybe. Meanwhile we've known it was important since close to the start of the show.

Because of that I think it's the sort of ~mystery box~ crap that will be mentioned every once in awhile but due to plot reasons they won't have the downtime to go and investigate it until much later, no matter how much we as the viewers know that something really important must be down there.

As for what's actually in it, maybe important notes from Eren's father about the titans? Maybe they'll have some sort of shocking revelation. Titans are people too? The titans built the walls to keep humans out? Mankind is the real monster? It was Earth all along? (or maybe it will just be more of whatever Eren was injected with so they could raise a titan army of their own?).

But I'm just getting silly with some of those guesses there. Outside of throwing out wild, random speculation there's not really much to say because all we know is that A) Something important is in the basement B) Eren's father knows what it is and C) Considering the subject of the show whatever is in the basement probably relates to titans be it weapons, information, or whatever.

Inside the basement Eren is horrified to find a room smaller than his house built into the very earth beneath it and filled with boxes that hold old things put in storage and knickknacks that never found a home in the house above it. In one box, he finds clothes that look familiar to him, but are much too small to fit him now. Has Eren been a Titan the entire time?

Doesn't everyone?

Obviously, in the basement is the dad's porn collection. Everyone will be terrified at the tremendous loss of life spent to reach this basement.
Until they realize it is all of Mikasa's mom and thus the last remaining Asian porn humanity has. Then it becomes justified.

Alternately, it is a city of small folk. Eren accidentally smashes their walls and eats some of them. Then one of them transforms into a human and later finds his dad's basement. The cycle continues infinitely smaller.

Murdertime

Months of research and development, experiments on Eren and excursions into Titan controlled territory are necessary to develop weapons and train soldiers to take back the area Eren's basement is in. When he arrives there, he discovers a cache of information and documents detailing everything they've learned in the past few months, which would have been really helpful at the time, but now all that's really useful is his family recipe for distilling gin.
