Yeah, I don't have texting so I end up paying a couple of dollars per text but I really don't text message very often.

I wish I jumped on that older $10/month for 500 text messages or whatever it was but now $30/month for unlimited texts is rediculously too expensive.

Ok, so don't switch to mobile share. I don't see what the question is? You won't be forced off that plan in any way, so really it's just up to you if you need the legit 5Gb tethering plan.

For the record, if you have a voice plan with either limited/no texting, and/or a lower data plan, almost everytime it will be less than a mobile share plan. For better or worse, mobile share is meant to pile on all features at a lower rate.

You would be surprised how many plans I still see of 1400-2200 minutes. Those people should switch to mobile share.

I'm curious why the OP says to avoid the 300MB plan so much. I'm a techy person living in San Francisco and I only use about 150MB a month. Sure I don't stream music or watch youtube on the bus, but it seems drastic to tell everyone to avoid it. My parents living in the midwest that spend time doing what 60 year olds do are never going to get close to 300MB.

Am I just not checking instagram enough when I'm away from a computer? I look up directions when I need to, find restaurants, check sports scores, etc.

Like I said, I will probably upgrade my data when I get a new phone soon so maybe it's just a matter of switching and realizing everything I've been missing, but it's sort of sickening how much everyone sits on their phones at all times here.

The ladies brother is like that. He barely uses a gig every month. But he's also a nerd like you/me whatever. He actively tries to stay on WiFi. Normal people don't always think of that. Then overage is a mother gently caress on those small plans. Because its another 15 bucks for another block of data.

On the flip side. I Dont use WiFi at all. I do Google music and Facebook. Some light light tethering. I use 20+ gigs a month.



So long story short. It does work for some people but even my grandmother uses more than 300 megs a month and that's just keeping up on Facebook looking at pictures of her grandkids. Its not a fair priced plan at all.

Just checked. I'm at 9 gigs. I have until the 7th of next month in this cycle. I have not tethered this month. Its all Google music.

It's just a crazy hard sell and ATT hasn't positioned it well marketing wise. People don't walk in thinking about home security and ATT. Also, home automation is nice but not a necessity do I get s lot of "oh that's nice" and that's it.

The LTE is so fast it's not frustrating to use. That's why I find myself using more data. It's not, oh, well lets wait for this lovely HSPA to load this loving page, or youtube video endlessly buffering... gently caress it I'll just wait until I get home.

The LTE is like having WiFi everywhere you go, it was worth the upgrade of phone all by itself.

One of my best speedtests on LTE was 33.7 Mbps down, 18.4 Mbps up with a ping of 69ms on my iPhone5.

Exactly. You tend you use it more because things happen drat near instantly instead of waiting 30-60 seconds for something like Facebook to load. Or endless YouTube buffering. And god forbid you want to watch it in HD because SD looks like total poo poo anymore.

So. you use it more because its not frustrating to use. And poo poo downloads faster so it just ends up using more data.

Keep your unlimited. You Dont need the overage and just tether like you are now .

Depends on market. Verizon hits 50 here. Att in the same market peaks 25-30.

I'm not the guy with unlimited. That's the other guy. I have the 200MB plan right now and my family is thinking of doing the mobile share.

My apartment complex forces me into only having one ISP option. It's decent, but not great (worse than cable). When I get tired of it, I switch to cellular because it is SO MUCH FASTER. HD from the NBC and Crackle apps with ~2 seconds buffering!?

Here are the new changes to prepaid that were announced today:

But in my market where there's no Sprint or T-Mobile and Net10/Straight Talk aren't great its gonna clean up. I'm probably going to switch my personal line from contract to this when it becomes cheaper for me to do so.

So apparently the whole state of Minnesota was dark this morning, at least as far as voice calls go. Anecdotally Verizon and Tmobile were down as well in my immediate area.

Pretty retarded, I wonder how such a thing could happen?

May I rant for a moment?

The billing with AT&T is a complete loving joke. Last month, we were apparently charged the $35 for a 3rd line that we added the month before, but then the charge was eliminated for some unknown reason. So this month they have charged us the $35 twice. They also mailed me a $13 check for some completely unknown reason.

Can folks (particularly AT&T employees) share their experiences with blacklisted phones?

Do they tend to come back eventually, or just circulate on craigslist/ebay indefinitely?

An AT&T employee told me yesterday that even if you were to buy a second-hand phone legitimately, the original owner would still always be able to call in and have the phone blacklisted. Could this be avoided by doing the purchase/transfer at an AT&T store?

This whole blacklist setup just feels unhelpful on both ends. On the one hand, I had my phone stolen on a drunk night out (yes I'm dumb), and had it blacklisted soon after. But it sounds like the chances I ever get it back are slim. Meanwhile, I'd be willing to buy a used replacement, but there appears to be no way to protect myself against getting scammed.

I've worked over 6 months and have yet to run into a blacklisted phone. So for what it's worth it's somewhat rare at least.

Notes on both accounts about the sale can help. Just gotta get a rep willing to note the sale of the device.

On the other hand, an Apple Genius Bar dude recommended meeting a craigslist seller at the Apple store so they can inspect the phone for hardware damage (obviously an iPhone specific issue). He had horror stories of people trying to sell phones on craigslist that had removed several components from inside for later resale.

Sounds like it's pick your poison, as no one is going to run around town with a stranger to two different stores just to sell a phone.

Why are you buying second hand? To get a discount. Discounts mean making concessions in terms of quality or warranty. If you're scared shits not gonna be legit, the only way to be sure is to buy brand new.

No loving way would I note an account regarding the sale of a phone from one person to another. Go make a contract/bill of sale and have it notarized or lawyered or whatever.

Yeah, I'm willing to take a beat up phone without warranty that is functional for a discount, but I'm not willing to take on the risk that the whole phone is going to be rendered inoperable due to someone being a dick.

The problem is it seems nearly impossible to reasonably protect against that risk.

When I lived back in downtown Philly, there was an Apple store about a 10 minute walk from my place. When selling an old phone on craigslist the guy wanted to meet there also so they could check out the phone. He recommended calling AT&T to let them know the phone was changing hands. I told the guy buying it to do it if he wants and to contact me if he needed anything. Never heard anything back, so I guess it's all okay.

I've sold every iPhone I had from the 3G to the 5 until I switched to Android. Blacklisting never came up and obviously wasn't an issue because why would I do that to someone I just sold a phone to? I'm not an rear end in a top hat I just want to cover the cost of the upgrade.

When you activate a new phone for a number does it automatically disassociate the account with the old device? Or can people still call in and blacklist at that point? Just more curiosity than anything else.

Why wouldnt you? I did it all the time at AT&T and I do it all the time at sprint. I can promise you some of the dudes that would have otherwise would of reported it stolen the second they walked out of the store. People are shitheads, Rather protect good customers. Maybe its not 100% successful, But im sure it prevents some of that. You're gonna be the rep that calls and activates a soon to be stolen phone anyways, Or gives that customer a new sim or whatever the case may be. You might as well make sure it dont come back on you.

I was told by an AT&T rep in a corporate store that the original owner can still call in and have the phone blacklisted, even long after the phone has been activated on a new account.

With liability how it is I wouldn't note an account with something like that either.

There's nothing that could back on me regardless as we have no policy in place currently to check every customer owned device against a blacklist. Also, there's nothing official or enforce-able about a sales rep noting an account with regards to witnessing the sale of a device. I tend to err on the side of caution and not over extend myself. There is a simple solution that AT&T could implement itself.

You already ID people in-store when they make changes to their account. Well, customer A and customer B come in to the store. Customer A wants to sell his phone to customer B. You ID both customers and confirm that they are who they say they are. Customer A instructs you to remove the device from his account, and add it to customer B's. Some note is made in the system to this effect, and if customer A (or someone claiming to be customer A) ever calls back to tech support or whatever about that device, the system says something like "this device no longer belongs to customer A."

It would not be difficult, but would require AT&T's system to have mechanisms for this.

I did a search in this thread for "Nexus 4" and "N4" but didn't find many results.

I'm heavily considering buying a Nexus 4 from Google Play and jumping on my Fiancee's account. It looks like a couple of people have activated N4's on AT&T, I just wanted to check and see if anyone ran into any problems.

I know that the N4 is capable of HSPA+, and I currently live & work in an LTE Market (which I would assume is also an HSPA+ market...not exactly sure how to check that...?), so my question is if there is anything in particular I need to do in order to activate the N4 and get HSPA+ speeds. ...and then how do I check to make sure I'm connecting to HSPA+ once the phone is active?

I'm pretty sure the HSPA+ market covers the same. They don't release maps for it anymore.

The reason you probably don't see many people discussing it is because... well why get an HSPA+ phone when on AT&T you can use LTE?

Some folks like to stick with the hardware upgrade cycle and not the carrier subsidy cycle. For some that means the Nexus line of devices.
