I don't think I've ever heard of that, but I also used lovely TN panels until like three months ago so don't go by me. You could look at a MBA?

Regular nVidia drivers cause the laptop to crash to a halt completely, and they stopped providing updated modified drivers in 2009. So my video drivers are from 2009, and I can't update. Wouldn't any computer that's 5 years old have trouble with modern video streaming?

Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus (great name ha) announced, 3200x1800, 12 hour battery, 1.4kg. I'm really hoping the battery life holds up; I was expecting new ultrabooks to be maybe 10 hours, given that the new Air is 12. Supposedly slightly better trackpad and keyboard than last gen Series 9, too.

Hopefully Microsoft will actually implement something to improve the user experience with these screens. It's a shame they don't mention the specific processor/GPU for the Plus.

The real question is HD4400 or HD5000? If I can get an HD5000 GPU in there, I will be all over that.

A lot of theoretical power that's pretty constrained by a tiny thermal envelope that results in throttling and the (admittedly much improved) drawbacks of SLI, including microstuttering. It makes a lot more sense to either get a single 750M or get a better GPU altogether.

Toyed with the idea of a gaming desktop awhile back, priced it out around $900 and was set to pull the trigger, but suffered a crisis. Realized I don't value face-melting performance as much as mobility and being able to move easily around the house with my laptop, and I don't count a ~7 lb laptop as too heavy. With that in mind, I am willing to pay more for a laptop than a desktop PC, and am willing to accept significantly lower performance. Disclaimers done. What do you think of this laptop? My goal here is to get the top performance possible for my dollar without reaching the zone of diminishing returns (over $1,200 by the OP's description). Specific games include Path of Exile, Borderlands 2, Guild Wars 2.
15.6” FHD 16:9 LED Backlit Wide screen (1920x1080) i7-4700MQ (2.4 GHz) Nvidia GeForce GTX 770M 3GB 8GB RAM @ 1,600MHz 750GB HDD @ 7200 RPM (note: do not require or even overly desire SSD) 1 year warranty Runs about $1,165 without an OS. Questions:
Anyway, forgive my ignorance, I tried to do my research but am not so hot on computers.

However if it's priced in that area would it really be worth paying $400+ extra over the MBA/Sony Vaio Pro 13" when it's only real advantage is it's resolution (which isn't a huge selling point running Windows) Cretin90 posted:What do you think of this laptop? quote:750GB HDD @ 7200 RPM (note: do not require or even overly desire SSD) quote:More RAM? For what it's worth, I swapped in a hybrid drive into my current laptop because like 80% of other sub-$400 laptops the hard drive it shipped with was slow as hell. It did make a good performance boost. Although I can't comment on how long they last, it is a decent inbetween traditional platter drives and SSD, especially where space is concerned. I unfortunately have no idea how the cache SSDs affect performance, but I'd be wary of the hard drive it's paired with being a piece of poo poo.

My boss wants a new laptop for MS Office, general web surfing, and a proprietary .net application. Can't be an Apple, unfortunately. No real heavy lifting, and it will be plugged in most of its life on a desk. I was thinking something like a refurbished Thinkpad T410. Anyone have any other recommendations under $600?
