Cerepol posted:Alright I'm looking for some rap similar to Childish Gambino. I've never really listened to rap but I've enjoyed pretty much all of his stuff. Looking for recommendations on similar artists. (Tried NWA - Straight outta Compton and it didn't really do anything for me) Can think of few rappers more different from donglover than NWA... But to answer, he took his flow almost 100% from Lil Wayne, so that's a good start (specifically, everything after Tha Carter II). The content won't be quite exactly the same, but much of the same stuff will be there. If you're looking for some stuff that's maybe not quite so similar stylewise but more content-wise, I'd recommend Danny Swain (or sometimes just Danny!). Also check out Blueprint, possibly (the rapper, not the album). If you're looking for more general rap recommendations, I could put together a "sampler list" that would let you check out a lot of different styles, etc to see what you might prefer.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I could use some help. I just recently got a job as a Trivia Jockey. Essentially what I do is go around to different bars/restaurants, depending on where I'm scheduled, and run the trivia game that's being put on that night. The format is pretty simple: Introduce the game, ask question, play a ~3 minute song, make sure I have all the answers in, read off the correct answer, ask another question, etc. Basically, what I'm looking for are recommendations on ~3 minute (2:30-3:30) songs that won't have the patrons of a bar wanting to kick my rear end or yelling at me for playing lovely music. I don't really have any DJing experience at all, and I understand that each bar or whatever will have a different mood, but I was just wondering if anyone could think of a good resource to find songs that fit that description.

Is it a suburban-bar scene with older patrons or more of a younger/hipper crowd? When I've been to trivia night, the guy played mostly 90's alternative radio rock.

Well, it's basically South East MI, and most of the places I've been to so far have leaned towards the 30s-40s crowd. However, the bars that I want to host at this Fall (hopefully I can get them) will be in a college town where I assume it'll be more of the 20s crowd. I feel like I'd be more comfortable with the latter. And yeah, 90s alt rock is kind of what I've been stocking up on for this. Just trying to capture the feel of what I've heard so far.

In honor of Yeezus coming out, I dove back into to Kanye West's first two albums. I've listened to them in the past few days waaaay more than I have to Yeezus, funny enough. I can't get enough of that upbeat, soul-sampling sound. Any other hip-hop like that I should know about?

And like 1000000 different rap producers use soul samples, it's not anything Rza started. Also the last thing I'd call Rza production is "upbeat" You might wanna check out Common's "Be" album since I think Kanye did a bunch of production for that. Big Krit does a ton of sampling and most of his stuff is fairly upbeat.

I've been getting into what I think is called french house or maybe nu-disco, but it's hard to find what I'm really after using these terms. I like most of what I find in this vein, but my favourite stuff is the stuff that isn't too chill, has groovy and prominent bass, and vocal samples. Here are a few examples of what I mean so pretty much cool groovy contemporary disco sounds, I want more of it

Anyone have any recommendations for some cool funk, like the sort from Daptone Records and bands like The Budos Band or The Apples? Older stuff would be nice too. Honestly I'm up for about any sort of funk because I'm still exploring the genre but I've been enjoying this stuff a lot. This is the sort of reaction I'm aiming for.

I'm looking for some 80s new wave/pop with an emphasis on gross drum machines. Bonus points if it has world instruments. I can't get enough of that. Wanna lay some Linndrums over marimbas and wood flutes? Let's do this! Timpanis and analog synths? YUP!! Anything similar to early 80s Genesis, Shriekback, Wangchung, the Manhunter soundtrack, etc. is welcome.

So after years of being hung up on my music biases (I only listened to classic rock, you see ) I'm trying to get a bit out of my comfort zone and try to explore areas of music that I've traditionally kept away from. And there's none that I've avoided more than the Indie scene, for all the typical reasons that don't need to get dragged out here. Over the past few years though, I've slowly been warming to the idea that if I put aside my prejudices there's some really good indie out there. Recently on a whim I got my hands on some of Arcade Fire and the National, and found that while there were things I wasn't a huge fan of, overall I was really impressed to hear a lot of things I've traditionally despised (the use of a wide range of instruments and time signatures, the sort of expansive sound, etc.) harnessed to really good effect. Above all else it made me really want to explore and give indie a real chance this time. At the same time, this is the absolute tip of the iceberg in terms of music I could get into, and I'm not sure what my next step should be. Obviously I dislike stuff that I feel is trying too hard. The indie I've found myself liking so far generally has a strong sense of rhythm, and the guitar generally uses a wide range of tones and chords. I have a fondness in general for anything blues or jazz-influenced, and being able to make good use of piano, sax, or violin/strings. There's probably more I could throw out here, but I think that's good for now and am curious to see what people have in mind.

Amazon shows a 40th Anniversary, a stereo and a mono release Pet Sounds was originally mixed down to mono, per Brian Wilson's specifications. Therefore, the mono is Brian Wilson's original mix (likely remastered but still), while the stereo is updated to be, well, stereo (left and right channel distinction, among other things). As far as I can tell, the 40th Anniversary MP3s are the remastered stereo versions (while the 2012 mono mp3s are the latest version). As for which is "better", well, that's personal preference. The "purist" option (whatever that means) is probably the mono version but you should honestly just A/B(/C) the snippets and see which sounds the best to you, and if you can't tell, just go with whatever's cheapest.
