They say this in their KS FAQ:

quote:

Criticism: The name "The RoboRoach: Control a Living Insect from Your Smartphone" emphasizes this is not a scientific instrument but simply a toy.

Response: Given our emphasis on compelling demos that capture the public's interest, we chose a provocative title. A more accurate though much drier title would have been: "The RoboRoach: Study the effect of frequency and pulse duration on activating sensory circuits in the cockroach locomotion system, and the subsequent adaptation." Such a description though would have alienated novices who have never had any exposure to neuroscience or neural interface experiments. We aim to bring neuroscience to people not necessarily in graduate school and thus chose an easily understandable, provocative name.

Eh, it still sounds like a toy to me, albeit an educational toy.

Oh there is a distinct possibility he'll get 500k by the end of the thing. Even though Kicktraq overestimates by a mile because of early interest, the average daily interest is still really high. If it maintains $15k a day, it'll end extremely close to the 500k mark. If Gallagher does it right and starts creating higher tiers with exclusive physical goods, he can maintain that pace. That Kingdom of Death KS did exactly this and basically fed upon the initial 1200+ backers it got within the first two days. Very clever way to keep the KS total rising steadily.

Also, if it maintains that rate, it'll probably get a sharp last-minute push to get it over the edge once people realize HEY WE CAN GET PORN IN OUR MEGATOKYO'S IF WE DONATE ANOTHER $50K.

I honestly really hope it gets past $500k, just because Gallagher is probably the worst webcomic artist/writer when it comes to delivering on promises and creating content at a timely rate. He will gently caress it up, repeatedly, for years and years as he slowly grinds away at it. The only hope it has of getting done on time is everyone else associated with the project working with him. Unfortunately, all his parts are shared with at least one extra person, so when (not if) he inevitably flakes, someone else can carry the project forward without him.

For the time being, watching him flail about trying to create Stretch Goals that he clearly never had thought out properly is hilarious. Oh, part 3 you say? Where this godforsaken comic finally comes to an end? And only at $150k? He really doesn't want this thing to get to $500k, hahahahhaah.

Actually this is one of the few instances where you can report a project for its content:

Prohibited content list:

No offensive material (hate speech, etc.); pornographic material; or projects endorsing or opposing a political candidate.

Of course, whether they'll act on your report or just ignore it is another matter altogether. The hilarious thing was that back before the comic blew up he made a blog post threatening to shut down if he ever found porn of his characters.

I think he did that a couple of times. When presented with said porn on the MT forums he immediately did his best to deny it ever existed and bury it.

As dumb as it is it looks like they have a working prototype and at least some sort of crappy games to release with it when it comes out. Worse case, the dongle thing can be used for other purposes. I think they do a smart job in the video of saying "see how comfortable you are with the answers you're giving your friends" rather than "it's a lie detector"- doesn't mean that someone somewhere won't try to hinge an important life/relationship question on what it says.

Silly apps aside, I actually don't have too much of a problem with this one. It seems like it would be legitimately useful for a lot of people and is probably a cheaper, more portable alternative to a larger, more expensive device. At the very least, it's got research applications- assuming it's sensitive and accurate enough.

I know "iPhone device :jerkbag:" is practically shorthand at this point in the KS thread(s), but being one doesn't automatically qualify a project as "awful." Some of the most useful/least stupid successes to come out of kickstarter have been smartphone dongles.

In the last thread, someone decided to call out a project for an iphone-to-microscope/telescope adaptor (because :psyduck:) but one of the PIs at my grad school has one and he uses it all the time when doing microscopy.

If you have any understanding of research microphotography or the market for such products, then you'd know why a sub-$100 device that lets you attach a wireless 8 megapixel/1080p camera (that you already own and know how to use) to a standard scope fitting without tools is valuable.

$15 an hour is a good starting wage for some artists getting into the industry in some places though too. If it's their own project (and using a premade text game maker) then it's not that high a wage. The little animations are done by a completely different artist she's paying too. Then you factor in the fact that she's reusing the same 5 drawings for character portraits, just with different eyebrows drawn on...well...

Still, she's asking 60k for a Princess Maker ripoff game. At least she's paying other artists fairly for their work.

To paraphrase: "I didn't earn a sustainable wage during my first year teaching at a grossly underfunded public school, so an artist or creative professional shouldn't earn one either- ever."

How does this even begin to make sense to you?- unless you're the sort of idiot that considers art careers "frivolous" and devalues the amount of training and labor that goes into doing professional artistic work.

"MFA, huh? And internships? Two years? Very good...okay. So how about I pay you a waiter's salary- after tips, of course. I know what's fair. I mean, at some point you wanna have kids, right?"
