Sometimes I feel like this.

Borderlands costumes are good for one female with a bunch of males. She could do any of the Sirens or Gaige, since she doesn't want something revealing (like Moxxie), and the menfolk could do any of the other player characters or just random bandits.

Man do I want to do a Patricia Tannis costume. It's not happening any time soon, though. :sigh:

Good News: Bought a respirator (thanks guys!). Bondo is done except for a few pits here and there. Sanding is coming along nicely on Thomas.

Bad News: The drapings from the plastic guys didn't come out. They said they'd have to make a new mold, and then properly vacuum mold it, which would be +$1000. Out of my price range, so I bought a heat gun and they gave me a slab of thin plastic seconds so I can experiment with the visors on my own. I think I'll tackle it this weekend :(

A tron suit would be pretty awesome.

My helmets have come out to $250-$300 on two helmets so far, the only thing extra I'm looking at are the electronics (Maybe another $50-$100) and if I have to make a goddamn vacuum mold in a weekend, that will be a little more. Honestly, I never thought I'd do something like this, but you got to start somewhere. For Emerald City Comic Con, my husband and I did full breast plates/helmets/swords/"leather" skirts for Discworld characters - that was our first cosplay, and we learned along the way. The Daft Punk is certainly a learning experience as well - but, seriously, the internet can teach you everything you need to know. Pick something that really appeals to you and have at it. You might be dropping some serious cash on new equipment at first, but just think about it as an investment.

The Venture Bros. crew would be great for you guys - the show has quite a few recognizable characters with varying body types that lends itself perfect for group cosplay. You can make your costumes as simple or complex as you want (ranging from loafers and a kerchief to a full blown super villain costume). For the girl, she has a couple choices, ranging from Triana (simple), to Dr. Girlfriend (who has two costumes - I've done her original one easily one year for Halloween), to Molotov Cocktease (if you're really brave). Or you could go as Hunter Gathers during his stripping days, which is totally on my list now that I think about it.

I wish there was some decent alternative to chroming my helmet to get a bright, shiny gold. I just fear it's going to be crazy expensive. I have some Dupli-Color Gold, but it's really not very shiny. Do I need to do a specific base coat?

I'm currently "priming" it with some white paint so I can sand it to a super-smooth finish. (Sanded to 400, base coat, and will sand with 600+)

I've heard that with a proper gloss black basecoat it'll work, but I don't want to spend a huge amount of time/money only to have it not work properly.

I did this costume at DragonCon last year, it is the Grand Galactic Inquisitor from the Venture Brothers, and currently my sister and I are rebuilding it. One thing I need help figuring out is how to get the audio to work right on it without it feedbacking. Basically I used a portable PA system (like a megaphone) hooked up to a microphone, which was housed in the chest where his speaker is. The problem is, it feedbacks whenever there is a radio or some electronics nearby, and it also picks up radio waves (I was playing smooth jazz out of my chest for a while).

Is your PA system entirely enclosed in some sort of casing, or do you have the PCB hidden somewhere in the helmet? You could try shielding the PA system or shortening your microphone cable length, just doing simple stuff to prevent your microphone from acting as an antenna. You could also potentially stick the PCB in an RF shield bag like this, though you'd need to verify that the inside of the bag isn't conductive first. Or buy a ferrite bead and put it on the cable.

I'm working on sort of Tron suits for myself and my girlfriend right now. Ellumiglow.com (when it's up) made my life incredibly easy. They have precut/prewired EL panel kits for Tron costumes that run about $120 or so. According to the instruction sheet if you're using a wetsuit or some similarly heavy/nonporous material for your base suit, the adhesive backing on the EL panels is enough to keep everything in place.

She's a huge Mad Men fan, so we went as a generic 60's era couple last year. This year was my turn to pick, so I decided to semi-reuse last year's costumes and we were going as Tron and Betty Draper (:v:). Now I've just got to figure out how to get this tape to reliably stay put on a suit jacket and a soda fountain dress. I'm thinking maybe carpet adhesive.

This upcoming weekend we'll be working at my friend's parents' house so they don't come up here and try to shank us in our sleep or something. Actually, I think I've decided on doing the Tron version - which is flat gray and silver as you can see here:

I think I'll order one of those EL tape kits, and pick up a plain black set of motorcycle jacket/pants. Then it's just order up a couple hundred white LEDs, and get a solderin'. I'll have to make a jig like Duros did... I might even need to make a subvisor rig to mount the LEDs. Luckily, the LEDs appear to end up around the nose area, so vision shouldn't be TOO bad. I hope. (also, wearing glasses with helmets like this is just... painful. :()

I suppose I could cheat if I have extra EL tape, and just do a straight bar... but that kind of misses the effect.

What about taking a hole punch to some plastic or heavy cardstock and using that to mask the EL tape? You could probably approximate the look of LEDs decently and it'd save you a buttload of soldering.

They actually make led strips. And cheaply too! Like $20 for 600 of them. They can't be programmed like the ones Duros did, but they don't need to be. I may make the strips sequence, but I don't need more than that. Only problem is they are 12v, so it's a little note complex to light them up.

Speaking of jackets... any idea where I could find something similar to the Tron Legacy jacket they wear? I'm not averse to getting one custom made, but I have no idea where to even look. The EL wire I'm getting is differently shaped, so accuracy isn't TOO important.

They don't SEEM to be too complex - it's just a basic jacket made with angled panels front and back, as you can see in the figurine photo here:

I'm just waiting for the paint to try before I de-mask the helmet and test-fit the visor. It's looking pretty great in the silver/grey.

I can't personally vouch for their leather work (yet), but look up "Machete & sons" on Etsy. They do great work - I had them make a fully custom tailcoat + pants for my wedding. We swapped sketches back & forth, they sent out some great fabric swatches and sent out a linen muslin before final assembly. It may be a bit excessive if you just want it for a one-off; in that case, Amazon has a surprisingly wide selection of "motorcycle jackets" or whatever they call that style.

Wow, they do nice work (it's MacheteNSons on etsy, BTW)... but that's waaaaay out of my price range. I suppose finding someone local who can take a pattern (this one is close: Kwik Sew 3570) and modify it slightly (different fabric, adding panels, etc) would be a bit more cost effective.

I'll be honest, I don't entirely understand where this leaves us.

I have a question about visor tinting (which maybe relevant to you guys doing the awesome Daft Punk costumes). I'm currently working on a Protomen costume but unfortunately the helmet I bought does not have have a decently tinted visor, so I'm lookiing for low-cost ways of tinting my clear visor. The two best options I've seen so far are tinting it with RIT dye (which seems too light for me) or going with a spray tint like Night-Shades. Has anybody tried these methods before and if so how effective were they?

I plan on using RIT dye and you can do multiple "baths" to get the desired darkness. All you need to do is dunk it in ice water for a bit in between dips into the RIT water
