The whole thing just full of these because of all the japanese puns that are nearly impossible to translate. I can sort of understand that. However, "She's so genki" is inexcusable.

Yeah, Aoishiro had REALLY bad translation. I mean, it wasn't at gibberish level at any point, but there were tons of sentences that were poorly worded, or seemed like outright non-sequiturs due to the shoddy translation. I was surprised since the guy who did the translating seems fine in everything else I've read from him (obviously I can't compare with the raws, but none of the above issues).

So I finished the After Story True End in Clannad. Whew. I can't really say this was a rollercoaster ride, but it definitely was long journey.

I could never really take Nagisa as a character in the main game, and she was probably the least interesting part of After Story. Whenever she was around, it seemed like I was reading... I dunno, "The Tragic Lives Of The Marshmallow People" or something. The supporting cast and the main end were pretty interesting, though. It was nice to see the story continue when many others would just have ended it right where the Main End and True End diverge.

Aaaand apparently the game has a fuckton of extra content, like Little Busters. I guess I should check that out. Also, from what I've seen of the anime so far, it makes the VN pretty much obsolete. Faithful to the original, but better executed. Tomoya being voiced makes everything a little better.

You don't really need to spoiler that Nagisa is the main heroine/true route when you meet her within the first 2 minutes of the game.

I liked Sakaki/Class Rep a lot so I decided to do her MLE route, and jesus Sakaki's mom saying she was with a lot of men for money throughout Sakaki's childhood and "thinking back on it, those men might've done bad things to her."

Is she seriously saying she just sat back and did nothing while random men abused Sakaki as a child? What the gently caress?

For a stupid high school harem parody this got absurdly dark all of a sudden. Jesus, Sakaki :smith:

Honestly, so far I think Takeru's being kind of a clueless dick, but Class Rep is pretty great so I like it so far. And things like her having to deal with everyone thinking she hosed Suzumiya up on purpose so they bash up her locker, talk poo poo behind her back, etc are an interesting direction to take things, especially after the happy-go-lucky perfect Lacrosse win in Sumika's route. I'm at Chapter... 5, I think? In the middle of the goddamn jungle with Yoroi. It feels weird having Yoroi be way more competent than Takeru is.

The game is great so far but I feel like it's luring me into a false sense of security with Yoroi's cheerfulness and the happy music, especially with all I've heard from this thread about Unlimited and Alternative bringing the tears. :ohdear:

It definitely feels like a nice change of pace from when I played F/SN with how quick and effective the pacing is. It honestly trips me up sometimes.

edit: I can't help being really suspicious of Yuuko. It feels like she's so cagey about Kasumi and what her real purpose is, plus she keeps talking about how 'busy' they are. The brain in the room is probably a BETA's brain or something. Kasumi probably has some connection to the TSFs or the BETA too. I have no idea. :downs:

I started playing No, Thank You!!! (some parts of the official site are NSFW) yesterday. I'm not even through one route yet, but it's a lot more interesting than I thought it'd be. I was sort of just expecting slice-of-life stuff with BL shenanigans, but there's a lot of action and intrigue and I already spoiled myself on the big twist the MC is a dirty, lying snitch! but I really can't wait to see how that plays out now. It's also probably one of the most modern/clean-looking BL games out there in terms of system stuff (most BL games are like 5+ years behind the times). At any rate, it's really interesting so far and a pretty far departure in a lot of respects from standard BL poo poo.

I still want to see what the BETA look like. And from what they're saying about Hangar 90 I think that Kasumi might be Sumika with BETA injected into her. That would be pretty horrific as well as confirming my suspicions about Yuuko being true. :ohdear: And if she's a bioweapon, that means she's probably going to die to take out the BETA. Maybe Yuuko was the one who remotely manipulated the HSST or whatever it was to turn on its thrusters and set itself on a crash course for the base, but I doubt she'd be that suicidal, so it doesn't make sense...

This game is so good so far but I have no idea what's going to happen :tinfoil:

I just realized, is Squad 90 an intentional parallel to Unit 731? The timelines are off somewhat but it seems really familiar.

edit:

Why the hell would you put in a scene at the ending with the love interest of choice and her child? And have them talk about the (presumably long-dead) Takeru?

Why did Kasumi leave before Takeru could find out the truth?

For more sadness here's Takeru's translated speech at the end of Unlimited:

I had a dream.
A dream of people living innocently, without knowing the meaning of peace.
I had a dream.
A dream of people risking their lives and living for the sake of protecting something.
I think...only God knows which it was.
But I still ask myself...was there something I could've done?
I wonder, was that why I came to this world in the first place?
If this was my unavoidable destiny,
then what exactly was I to this world?
Sad partings...the fate of humanity...and my own...
I still wonder if I could've changed them.
If I'd had a strong will to protect what I was meant to protect...from the start...
Then maybe there was something only I could've done.
I think there was.
So...so...
At the very least...I'll live on...and try to protect everything.
I want to survive and protect this planet everyone gave up on.
I think I can do that.
The people left behind...the feelings left behind...the people I love...
I'll protect them all with my life.
I should be able to do something.
There must be something.
Humanity won't lose.
I'll never lose.
Because...I'm here...
Because...I'm...still here...

Alt is a very international setting and they felt that having the opening in English would heighten the realism.

For better or worse (better) they went ahead despite not having anyone who really nailed their highschool English class.

Well, at least I'm sure it felt very authentic to Japanese players.

I think I'm... five chapters in, or something? I got to see Yoroi's dad. He's... he's something. Kind of genuinely scary.

My theories about Kasumi so far: She's probably connected to the BETA and definitely connected to Sumika. She has demonstrable psychic powers, which explains why she can loving read Takeru's mind at points, as well as being able to monitor his brainwaves.

The brain in the tube is definitely connected to BETA, as illustrated by the opening cutscene with a bunch of them hanging from the ceiling in a hive. And... that's where things get a little hazy. Maybe the BETA take their victims back to hives and use them to make more BETA.

So the brain in the tube is Sumika's brain, and it was transported from the still-active hive below Yokohama Base. It's possible that Yuuko joking about "it would be bad if just your mind got transported" isn't that far off and Sumika's brain is between worlds, but more unstably than Takeru because Takeru's the only one who wants her there, which explains why sometimes Kasumi remembers memories from Takeru's world and sometimes she doesn't.

And Kasumi's body is an artificial one created through whatever means, controlled remotely by the brain, and that's why she was afraid to lose it.

Alternative IV is a project to have Kasumi take control of the BETA hivemind (it's always a hivemind, isn't it) and have them destroy themselves. Or maybe Kasumi is going to use the accumulated data from Squad 207 to become the ultimate Eishi... or something.

I have no idea! :v:

Thought I'd make a followup post since I finally finished a route in No, Thank You!!! I think it's pretty handily the best BL game I've played already? It's a shame it probably won't be translated any time soon, if ever.

I guess for some background here's the premise: One day a young man (the player character) sees a dude about to get hit by a car and jumps in to save him. Our heroic MC ends up with a nasty head injury and amnesia. As thanks for saving his life, the guy he saved puts him up and gives him a job at his jazz bar, sótano. MC gets a name from the employees there––Haru––and we soon discover that while the bar is, in fact, a legitimately classy jazz bar, it's also a front for some extremely shady business!

From there, the game's split into chapters and basically each chapter is sort of a different 'case' they're presented with, like the first chapter involves dealing with the sister of one of the bar's employees and her stalker problem, and so on. Eventually drugs and yakuza get involved and everything gets more complicated and deadly.

The game has an interesting mechanic that, in addition to regular multiple choice options, on certain occasions the "No, Thank You!!!" button pops up on the screen and you have to decide whether it's appropriate to push it by sort of reading between the lines in a given situation. It seems like kind of a silly gimmick, but it makes a little more sense after the big twist and mechanism's sort of emblematic of the style of the storytelling in general––the game doesn't like to give you blatant answers to a lot of things, you have to read into it, especially where character motivations are concerned. I haven't really played all that many VNs, but it felt pretty fresh to me since a lot of VNs do like to just up and tell you stuff like that vs. showing it to you and letting you intuit it yourself.

The other interesting mechanic is a big spoiler: once you complete one route and discover Haru's true identity, subsequent playthroughs read wildly differently because now you get uncensored access to Haru's thoughts and actions

It is an eroge so there's plenty of porn, but most of the sex is actually pretty plot/character-development relevant (and not I'm-in-heat-because-plot/I-need-my-mana-replinished-with-sex-because-plot/etc type plot-related either). The relationships seem to have a bit more... I don't really want to say 'depth' necessarily, because in some respects they're rather shallow relationships, but there's more going on there than the average BL and they don't follow the standard romance script at all (I'd really hesitate to describe any of them as particularly romantic, except maybe Hiroyuki, but he's not terribly invested in the central plot).

Anyhow, if you like/don't mind BL and you can read Japanese it's totally worth checking out, it's not like any other BL game out there.
