Here's my soundcloud. Genre hopping psychedelic rock. We've been compared to Ween, The Flaming Lips and TMBG. It's mostly demos but there's a few studio recorded songs in there too. We're working on an album.

This is my experimental DJ Set/Mixtape series.

The first episode "Proof of Life" was a test run that turned out pretty good and very close to what I wanted in the series: A half hour show of very eclectic, amusing, high quality tunes and found audio/samples in an interesting format. This one was kind of freeform but it has themes involving food, phone calls, and FEELINGS.

The second episode which that was just posted is a DJ set love letter to the spirit of Metal and Satan. It's way more aggressive than the first and would make a great soundtrack for driving a black camaro super fast into a brick wall.

We set it up about a month ago, so it's still a little sparse right now, which we're hoping to rectify soon. We've got a couple of thrash metal tunes on there, one of which is a fuzzy live recording from our last show, and we're slowly putting up clips from our experiments with noise metal, which I'm really psyched about. Hopefully we'll have a lot more from those sessions soon.

Direct link to the live tracks. Doesn't sound great, just two condensers set up at the sound booth. Lots of reverb in the room, it was memorial day weekend in a beach-town, so no one was really out that night.

Love the harmony going on in the "The Scrambler"; the way you do the turnaround at 1:00 back into the main melody is great. Also, it seems you have a talent for playing dissonant chords before going back into the main melody, which always makes it interesting for listening (like in "Jumble of Bots"). My only suggestion/advice/whatever is that in some of the songs the drums sound a bit too robotic. For example: "Moon Too Blue" could use a little more variety in the rhythm section. However, those are minor nitpicks. Great work.

Man you guys should try playing a few soft jazz songs, in the style of Chuck Loeb or something.

Anyway, your rhythm section is tight and the funk is fun to listen to, especially the groove in the beginning of "Chameleon" (which is tow-tappingly good). However, some of the songs could use a few minutes of trimming as they feel too long.

Also please write an old blues album... "Shifting" and "Road to Caroline" are superb. You captured a little bit of that old delta blues sound and I would love to hear more of it.

You do fantastic work with layering sounds, especially in "Whether Vain" and "Introduction to Flight". I didn't really like the first part of "Cable", if only because there was an electronic tom hit that seems out of place. But everything after that is gold.

Do you listen to the Malah? You sound like a more electronic version of them. Really good stuff.

Thanks! We've got a few more standards that make their way into our rotation, but those usually only come out if we're playing legit jazz joints (which we seldom are) or if it's early in the night. I'm sure it's like this in most areas, but the jazz scene here is incredibly clique-ish. We're still working on making the right contacts to get into those places. But even then, they kind of look at us funny being all electric and no horns. We're kind of determined to start a bit of a fusion movement here because it's absolutely non-existent save for us and maybe one or two other unknown bands.

I agree about the length of some of the tracks; I keep trying to tell our guitarists that 1-2 minutes of a well thought-out solo says a lot more than 5 minutes of noodling. And as we've been adding more and more songs (particularly originals) to the catalog, we are trimming down the time a good bit. Ideally I'd like none of our originals to go past 5 minutes unless it's a piece with a lot of changes and we can keep it interesting. But at the same time, if we're playing and people are getting into it, of course we're going to keep going :)

Haha thanks again, I really do need to start picking up my resonator again... I've got a few more written, just never recorded them.

Thanks. I feel very much the same. Drums are something i have alot of trouble with. i do them all in ableton from scratch and i havnt branched out into using alot of plugins. i started using the program as just an apparatus to record acoustic stuff on but i havn't had a drum set in years and have since moved on to add more electronic stuff. i use a couple of their built in drum sound composers on some of those songs or i would always change a couple of parameters on the presets to make them sound interesting or distorted or degraded etc to make it interesting, but yeah all in all the drums always sound a little robotic or tinny/flat. ive watched a couple of videos and read some guides and tried doing some layering to get a better sound and also EQing certain parts of the kit to emphasize them but im always looking for tutorials/links regarding building drum sounds in the DAW because i still need to learn alot of fundamentals.

im glad you noticed the dissonance. i dont know a ton of theory but ive always listened to oddball and low fi stuff.

Working more with the velocity of the hits (and the relative normal volumes of each element) and having effects chains that subtly change goes pretty far, I'm only on my laptop so I can't give detailed advice... Unlatched effects and riding in sends, feeding bits into a bus with saturation so it blends together and kind of modulates the interaction of stuff, something I love to do is have a reverb on a send and then process the reverb so its no longer a room space but a weird wash of noise, layer elements either to strengthen the sound or create variety/reduce staticness, all worth playing with.

:siren: :siren: Disclaimer: My drums aren't anything special, and I go for hiphop style drums which aren't exactly live sounding.

Anyway have a music.

Bunch of solo songs I made over the past couple of years. I didn't mix any of them very closely and rarely did more than a few takes. I'm into lo-fi stuff and singers who are bad singers, and I know that doesn't mean having poo poo production and tons of mistakes and terrible vocals, but that's the aesthetic I go for. It's difficult to get a good lo-fi sound in the computer era.
