I ran into the guy earlier today on DS9 and decided to offer him an olive branch. Except it wasn't so much an olive branch as it was a Disco ball.

He then went to a private channel and started laying out his "puppet master" plan, completely unaware that I was sitting in the channel the whole time.

Here's the result: http://pastebin.com/hWgw9hRn

Edit: Other comments in the SSR thread were deleted, but there was a guy who was trying to talk the sperg down a bit, saying "I doubt Dentals are THAT stupid," "they're smarter than you think," and, "be careful, it seems like you're just pissing in the wind." Of course, the dude completely ignores everything and keeps on ranting.

Sadly, porn and disco balls are the reason for his current state of impotent rage. He was perusing one of quality pornography establishments that the internet offers, and out of nowhere a pop-up ad appeared with a disco ball graphic and a beat he couldn't help but dance to.

Now everything is ruined forever, and it's all the fault of Goons. Indirectly.

From what I've heard, yes. It really got a lot of wind in its sails when Perfect World scooped it up (Atari was deliberately stifling and starving Cryptic because they're stupid and don't understand MMOs), and it got a lot of the good ex-City of Heroes developers when NCSoft shut them down.

I only started playing a little over a year ago, so I cannot say anything about beta, or launch, but from what I've heard, it's getting better. I'm actually enjoying the new content, Legacy of Romulus, a lot. That said, there are still bugs and glitches all over the place and ground combat is pretty dumb.

This may have been mentioned before, but in Path of Exile, there's a required quest which involves three bandit chiefs. There are four options: side with one of these bandits and gain a reward depending on which one you pick, or kill them all. Two of the bandits in particular can be quite difficult to kill depending on your character and skill build, however, so it can occasionally be necessary to group up to kill these bandits - or just get a high-level character to carry you. However, the bandits have two options: help, or kill. If you choose to help the bandit, you will have to fight any member of your party who sides against you. So, naturally, you get high-level characters who offer to kill the bandits for well-progressed but insufficiently powerful players who simply want to continue on with the game. Unfortunately, the high-level player tends to have a very flexible view as to just what constitutes a bandit.

This is particularly brutal on Hardcore mode, where a single death means that your character is shunted to the Standard league. This doesn't actually do anything to the character - it still exists - but people will get absolutely livid about now being in the "scrubcore" league and being 'forced' to reroll. Luckily, "bandit griefing" (as it is colloquially known) is fully supported by the developers and is intended behaviour, so they're not changing it anytime soon.

Its not just spaceship games. World of Warcraft has had an item for years called the Piccolo of the Flaming Fire that makes people around you dance when you use it. Nowadays most wow players are pretty chill (relatively) but a long time ago it was pretty easy to find someone that would get enraged for being made to dance.

There is a type of player that goes into a total meltdown rage if anything happens to their character that they aren't in complete control of. I've guessed that as any MMO gets really big these people tend to ragequit and drift over to smaller MMOs where developers and players are more willing to put up with their poo poo.

With STO keep in mind Sun Tzu's sage advice "If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him".
STO has many fun items that launch cosmetic effects that often get released on seasonal events.
The fire extinguisher is Dental's signature item and is found early in the game during a starting mission. I haven't been on for a while, but holy hell that disco ball is amazing.

These items are put to great use, providing smoke effects for dance parties and crippling people's framerates when a dozen people fire off party poppers. These lead to complaints and forum requests because how dare people party!!!
I think there was a dev response to the effect of cheering us on for livening up the dance floor.

The trick is to stay utterly polite as pubbies will usually melt down into a bubbling pitch of expletives and threats to your family. A simple "report offensive mail" will eventually have them sitting in the naughty corner.

If you feel cruel join random pubbie fleets and see if they've left the back gate open to the bank. Or challenge them "to defend their honor" and best them in PvP without blinking an eye as many spend their time crafting their alter ego (complete with an epic biographical entry) that they forget to actually equip any gear and accuse you of hacking.

It's enjoyable just to imagine a nerd getting angry as he tries to roleplay some important diplomatic meeting with another fleet and then they are forced to start dancing because a disco ball showed up. And you'd think that guy would be able to masturbate to his character just the same if it is dancing. Or maybe he is roleplaying himself sneaking up on someone who is sunbathing.

I believe way earlier in the thread there were stories how just dancing around people trying to Roleplay got their tits in a twist. (Yes I know this is for Star Trek too but I'm pretty sure there was for Neverwinter!) Also roleplaying in a way they do not approve of, such as being realistic about your roleplay or doing something that they don't want to have happen to them but is perfectly legit anyway such as you pretending to be a blazed version of Gilligan and offering them a premium mandrake from your secret island.

So far, Neverwinter has provided for some pretty great griefing opportunities. There are lots of very hardcore DnD players that play Neverwinter, especially on the RP server, Mindflayer. These people will get raging mad over very small things. Two major griefing opportunities stick out.

First, you can cancel emote animations by interacting/getting close to someone. Running up and down the Moonstone Mask (A big rp/erp/sperglord area) and interrupting everyone will cause some major rage. It's gotten to the point where people see goons in their instance of the Moonstone Mask and pre-emptively zone to another instance or leave.

But my favorite is the second instance in the game, Cragmire Crypts. Before every boss, there is a short 5ish second cutscene that zooms in on them while they do a little animation. Nobody can move during the cutscene. Nobody can cancel the cutscene. Usually it only plays once when the first player enters the room. On the first boss of Cragmire Crypts, this isn't the case. The cutscene plays every single time someone walks across the threshold and will play multiple times for each person. If you want, you can indefinitely lock your party in the cutscene by just running back and forth over the threshold. If you do it fast enough (by using dodge rolls), it's difficult for them to kick you from the party if they have leave or even leave because they keep getting interrupted by the cutscene. Most of them will just force quit the game. However, there is no amount of time being logged offline will kick you from the group so they can't just leave, wait 5 minutes and come back because if you are still doing it, they will still be locked in the cutscene. I've only done this once or twice and only with people that were such incredible assholes that they really deserved it. However, it's beautiful to see unfold.

There are plenty of other ways to be a complete rear end in a top hat and grief in that game too. For example, making a foundry map that seems completely fine and normal for the first few minutes until someone steps on a switch that spawns 20+ mobs that immediately murder them and continue murdering them when they respawn until they quit. Oh and the death tax is pretty drat high in the game so a high level person dying several times costs a lot of money or 15-20 minutes at a campfire doing nothing.

I just did a search for "killed british cutscene neverwinter" :v:

Eve Online's game mechanics differ slightly from reality.

The ships that were lost are the equivalent of teleporting aircraft carriers and are nearly invulnerable when you have a significant advantage over your enemy. Unfortunately they trusted a guy who tricked them into teleporting blindly into an ambush.

No, I think the battleship analogy is a good one (incredibly expensive, also very vulnerable without proper support, and a monetarily equivalent quantity of that support could probably do a similar or better job).

The biggest advantage is that it only takes one player to pilot, while a similar force projection of more cost-efficient ships would require many more warm bodies. The relative value of man-hours and raw materials is somewhere that eve drastically differs from the real world.

Vadun posted:

The Revenant is basically a bad carrier. There's carriers for each of the four NPC nations, and then there's the Revenant, a faction carrier. Compared to the other four, it can't soak as much damage as the others and it's basically not really useful because of it. Faction stuff tends to be more expensive/rarer/harder to get, so the Revenant ends up being extra expensive/harder to get, while not performing as well as the others. For the big 0.0 groups, there's no reason to spend money towards making one for a member to use to help the corporation/alliance because anything else would be cheaper while still fulfilling the same role. To have this ship is to basically be wasting money to make a point about your resources and/or your ego.

And yeah, this wasn't some kind of pitched battle in which someone brought a $8000+ ship and lost it. The group of ships were trying to bait people into hunting them and the person leading the fleet intentionally led them into an ambush.

I'm not an EVE player but I like to keep up with the occasional news since EVE is strangely fascinating when you don't have to play it, so this is pretty much just poo poo I've read online and may not be accurate.

"Oh, and Senator, just one more thing."
I might have typed this up before, but I couldn't find it in a search.

When I played Neverwinter Nights back in the day, I discovered a neat trick involving Animal Empathy and NPC factions. The way NPCs were set up, they would be assigned to one of several factions which determined how they would react in combat. You could put commoners in one faction, guards in another, or have two monster factions that were both hostile to the players and each other.

I was tooling around a chicken coop in a town one day (don't ask) when I came across an innocuous-looking chicken. Being a druid, I decided to befriend the chicken by using Animal Empathy; when successful, the skill would make any animal your henchman temporarily. However, it retained the faction it was set to. Perhaps it was an accident or oversight, but for whatever reason, this random chicken was set to the same faction as all the citizens and guards in this town.

There was a custom script on this server to direct animal companions, familiars, and other henchmen to move or attack wherever you clicked. Out of sheer curiousity, I selected my chicken and clicked on a random player who was walking through the town. When the chicken attacked him, he auto-attacked it back, killing it instantly. However, when he did so, he became hostile to every NPC in the town. It took him about 6 seconds to be completely demolished by the town guards. I was just taking this all in with morbid fascination, standing over the corpses of the chicken and the innocent man that killed it. I realized I had discovered a great power that day, and decided never to employ it again.

Except for a couple times where I knowingly repeated the experiment "just to see if they fixed it yet".
