You get afraid status just by dwarfing their military, although it depends on the Civ. South Americans are apparently scaredy cats because I've had both Maya and Inca regard me that way frequently. England is another one, and I've had Monty act that way as well, but never Alex, Bismark or Harold.

It's worth noting that if you get Afraid from someone in the very early game, it indicates their starting Warrior has been killed. If their capital is nearby and you happen to have two or three Archers, it's worth taking them out.

Missed he Special Olympics/Games what it is called that gives +100% tourism for 20 turns. gently caress YOU PUPPET CITY WHO DECIDED TO NOT WORK TOWARD IT!!!!

I "like" venice but am really starting to dislike the whole "have to puppet" thing for my extra cities. Seriously if for one more turn that puppet city worked on it I would have won it and now can't win via tourism because it will take too drat long even with hotels.

Also anyone noticing Research takes a lot longer or is it just because I am rocking 2 fully upgraded cities?
I still see some civs a touch spammy with getting cities out but now it makes more sense. They are basically building new settlers as soon as they get a new city. Thats why they are all low low cities but they are rocking 5-6 of them. Interesting not sure if would try that but I have gotten out something like 4 settlers by turn 100

Cultural city states loan you art now as allies. :getin:

Also, I think science is actually how you win culture victories now. The National Visitor Center is probably the most important tourism wonder and it's almost at the end of the tech tree.

VVV Yeah it's good. You can access it immediately, every policy is good and the reformation beliefs are game changing. I'm pretty sure Justinian can have a 8 belief religion now with Piety, which is :psyduck:

Man, my Morocco game isn't even FAIR. I'm pumping out so much Gold, Production, Research, Tourism, and Culture, I could win any which way I want. A Domination or Cultural victory would probably take the longest, though I've already gotten Dido to wear my blue jeans just from trading, and I'm still a ways away from the top of the tech tree or most of the SS modules. I have so much cash that I've bought out almost every City-State in the world, and have more than enough to win the World Leader election in five turns. Trade routes and kasbahs own bones.

e: I think the AI really likes the new Diplomat spy option, because my Special Agent hasn't had to bust any heads in at least a hundred turns, when I've got like 4 cities with 5-star potential, whereas in my last G&K game I was killing fools and having my allies coup'd every other turn.

It's solid, especially if you pick up some of the wonders that let you buy great people with faith later in the game (or faith warriors early).

You definitely have to dedicate yourself to going for it early on though, you need to lay the seeds, because it's hard to play catch up by the mid game.

I'm not sure how viable it is in comparison to other early/midgame tactics yet, I haven't really tried a religious appropriate civ.

Plus buying Great Prophets in the 1900s is oddly funny.

Gotta say, shoshone pathfinders are my new favourite unit by far.

Pump out two of them with honor in the early game, upgrade them both to composite bowmen and go to town on nearby civs, then steal all their money for more settlers when they sue for peace!

The AI's main ways of competing with human tactical minds (tech disparity, building a shitstorm of units) are hamstrung on Marathon, so it's generally easier for human players who can take advantage of retreating and unit promotions.

Capitol: A building or complex of buildings in which any legislature meets.
Capital: A city designated as a legislative seat by the government or some other authority, often the city in which the government is located; otherwise the most important city within a country or a subdivision of it.

Any and all resources a trade route create are created from thin air. It's just that you're trading, so the merchants at the other end are still making a good deal, they're just not making bank like the merchants at your end.

It seems that you can suggest a slew of things people love for the UN, and then suggest one thing they don't like and suddenly the denouncements start piling in. I wonder how large the diplo penality is for suggesting things people don't like? It seems there is also a diplo penalty for heavily voting nay for something a civ proposed to the UN that ultimately fails to pass (and it seems to last a long time too).

I'm really having fun here. But goddam I feel a bit over whelmed! I'm going for a culture victory so I'm doing the best I can. I'm Pocatello on an archipelago map (always play random) and was friends with everyone. Then Boudicca backstabs me and has a MASSIVE army and takes one of my cities! I've never EVER had that happen to me before. Backstabbed, sure, but an actual decent assault force? What the hell? 3 swordsmen, 3 horsemen, 2 composite bows, and 3 catapults. Knocked me right the gently caress out, and I didn't have any units over there because we were friends.

Now we'll see how well the AI defends, because I'm taking my city back and her holy city. They will love me and my tourism.

Or they will die.

As Assyria, the day you have to upgrade your Siege Towers is the saddest day. Trebuchets are terrible, Cannons are only okay, and the entire process of slowly moving siege into range/losing half your health before you can fire is the absolute worst part of the game and made me never want to conquer prior to Arty.

Yeah, the longer the setting the worse the AI is at the game. Military units have far longer to move around and level up a lot more, which allows the player to build up a really formidable advantage.

Going up a speed is the equivalent of going down a difficulty, so on Marathon you want to really crank it up if you want a challenge.

Just passed a world religion. Out with the old superstitious mumbo jumbo, in with dat kush.

Late game it's still necessary to F10 between turns. Sweden has a fleet of 28 aircraft that he keeps moving around the Shoshone's cities, and if one of my boats catches LOS the turn time goes up to like 2 minutes.

Amazing. In my current King game on BNW, I conquered all 4 cities of America using a 5 Siege Tower Rush. I didn't have a single regular attack unit and still conquered his civilization. Towers can't attack units so I was killing units by taking their cities, evacuating them, luring them into retaking cities, then taking them back, killing the unit they had garrisoned in it. After defeating America without losses, I added on 3 Swordsman and conquered half of the Mongols including their Capital.

Total losses for eliminating a civ and forever crippling another: 1 Tower.

Verviticus posted:

They start with Cover and you can start them at Cover II if you have a barracks. In the case of my anti-America rush, none of his cities could do more than 15 damage to my towers.

God drat. This game is more intense and I was a bit thrown as to how to approach it but I was definitely hosed by my starting location. Within the bounds of my empire and the two nearest city states to me there is one source of horses, but 0 iron and 0 coal. Denmark was just to the south of me and was plotting against me the whole game but didn't declare until I was just about to hit Modern Era. I had a tiny military and had left much of the bottom tech tree to the wayside in favour of gunning the top so he invaded me with ski infantry and cannons vs pikemen and crossbows with a few Gatling guns. He also had far more units in total. I don't know if I'll be able to win the game but I'll be pleased if I can at least lose with dignity, with Alexander being elected leader of the world or something.

I've got 10 turns left until I can get the freedom benefit that gives 6 free foreign legions. If I get that I'm probably good.

E: also on the other continent Attila wiped out Pachacuti and Washington before I met them, I rarely see that happen.

I just had a loving evil idea. What if, as Venice, you used your Merchants of Venice to buy a city state... and then sold it to a civ you want to make friends with? I'm pretty sure a city is enough to empty ANYONE's treasury/income and have them still think they got the better bargain. Plus it would be a great way to dick over anyone trying to go Diplomacy AND probably make more gold than using the Great Merchant's Trade Mission ability.
