It's great she uses Hanna Rosin's hilarious overreach in "The End of Men" to support her view of the liberal left trying to emasculate men. Rosin's book was so poorly researched most of the basic statistics she used were completely wrong.

The thing that's really infuriating about that article, actually, is that I have heard that exact argument or something disturbingly close to it many times in person, in churches, dinners with lots of people, etc. it's an incredibly common opinion. The reason for this is that as privileged as your average low income white person is, it still feels quite hard to get by, because it is. So of course being told it is easy for you is offensive and they will lash out at whoever says it.

Two things about that Venker article. First, this came from it:

quote:

Plus, many schools have eliminated recess. Such an environment is unhealthy for boys, for they are active by nature and need to run around.

When I read this all I could think of was a litter of puppies.

Second, and I think I'm correct here, the one and only time she uses the word "white" is in the next to the last paragraph in the article and then she refers to "White American Male", capitalization is her's here. So if you start the article, you think well she's talking about all males in general and its not until that paragraph at the end that she lowers the boom and lets you know that she's making a racist rant.

I get that part, I just couldn't figure out why Rush was trying to imply that feminists would support such a ruling, ostensibly because feminists hate pretty girls I guess. It seems to me that any feminist I can think of would be rightfully pissed off. Listening to Rush bend over backwards and smash non-interlocking puzzle pieces together to try and bring this verdict in line with his "Obama is a Socialist", feminists are liberals and fit the entire matter into "Liberalsuckville" was really something to behold.

I'm still not sure what he was on about. I'm pretty sure he supports employers being able to fire anyone at any time for any reason, but since this ruling is so strange, he had to tie into something beyond "this dude who fired this lady is a dick" and it must somehow be the fault of liberals.

Speaking of the Zimmerman case, Hannity's been going on and on wondering why liberals are always trying to divide the country (by making this case about race). Because Hannity would never do that, you see.

"Coming up next, ACORN, the New Black Panthers, voter fraud, voter ID laws, a segment on affirmative action, food stamps and Jeremiah Wright. Also James O'Keefe will be joining us to tell us why Obama was born in Kenya. New revelations after the break."

Hannity really is the worst of all the people we're discussing in this thread.

Anyone in your situation should realized the utter depravity and sorrow and misery that is a result of the existence of the rich. The economy is a zero sum game, and if you're sleeping on a bed worth ten thousand dollars, eating food that costs a hundred dollars a meal, driving a car that costs fifty thousand dollars and living in a house that costs a million, that means there's like a thousand people sleeping in the streets, starving to death because that amount of "excess" wealth has been transferred to your life instead of theirs.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but to explain why people don't think about or admit this. I'm lad you seem to admit it, but is it emotionally real to you, those people starving out there? Also, it seems really incremental, but the aggregate of all that siphoned wealth could be represented the way I just did for understanding purposes, but it's really more like every rich person taking a small fraction of that from everyone in the country, not any one specifically. So the victims are nameless, faceless, an other.

What this all adds up to is it not only being emotionally impossible to carry around these beliefs without thinking about(no offense) how selfish you really are unless you excuse it somehow. Not only that, but it's not their fault it is like that and it is very difficult to understand or explain why it is like that, especially when it means breaking down these false beliefs and basically telling someone they are a heartless selfish monster because they live the life they were born into.

Rich people are so insulated from the suffering their richness causes they don't just not believe it exists, if it is proven to exist, they find a way to blame the poor for it because the alternative is admitting that they are the worst kind of horrible monster in the world and in their head they are not that. They are just living their lives and they don't get it.

It is absolutely real to me, which is why I didn't go to big law and became a public defender. If there's a job that makes you understand how you were just a few bits of luck from being in poverty, it is that.
What is amazing to me is how virtually everyone else on the system, who has contact with real poverty daily, doesn't. Probation officers who refuse clients bus passes because they are "rewards," and them disbelieve that they can't afford the 3 bucks to get to probation. Judges who eat that poo poo up: "if you could afford that meth that sent you to prison, you can afford a bus pass."
Meanwhile, rich drug addicts avoid jail because they can afford rehab and therefore are "making an effort" (at 80k/mo Passages Malibu, where they get a loving butler).
It is clearly engrained in the psyche, especially in my right-wing county, but still amazing.
These people are not exactly sheltered. Many POs have been supervising these kids since juveniles and may have supervised their parents. They will rattle off their parents beating the poo poo out of these kids, having people executed in front of them, the massive mental health problems, and still gleefully recommend prison (because they are adults and have to take responsibility) for simple possession or require my client to be homeless because the one place they can live has a convicted felon living there (mom). I'm not sure what loving leaps they have to take to get there, but I'm told they somehow sleep well at night.

Agreeing with this. I'm not wealthy by any measure but over the course of two years, I lost my Father, my step mother and my grandma (also my son was born during this time), so it was sad and and uplifting and crazy all at the same time there, but there was a bit of money and property inherited and I'd be a selfish fool not to recognize that.

A lot of people, when their family members die, may not inherit anything but more debt (hospital bills, mortgages, creditors, etc.), so along with losing their loved ones, a lot of times they can barely afford to even bury them. I've learned a lot about this stuff over the last three years and, while I don't necessarily feel "lucky", since I'd prefer my son had grandparents, I'm acutely aware of the advantage I have and the things it allows me to do.

I mean, right now, my wife and I are trying to decide which house to live in and the logistics at times feel like a pain in the rear end. Everyone should have my problems, right? How much of a dick would I have to be not to know that?

This is twice you've gone off on this sort of tangent in this thread and the last time you did it, people asked you where you draw the line (how much is too much), which I don't recall you answering. Reading your posts, it sounds like you think that anyone with more money than anyone else should feel bad about and give it all away.

If ti helps, when I inherited what I have, I gave a poo poo ton of it away, donated to Betty Griffin House, gave some furniture to some kid moving off to college, gave potty chairs and poo poo like that to nursing homes, etc. You talk about millionaires and $50,000 cars but I've never really heard you say where the point is that someone has too much. To put in perspective, the money I'm talking about is six figures and the car I got is worth about $35,000. Should I give my car away and drive a Ford Escort or what?

I'd like to keep this thread on topic but you seem to have an unusual hard on for anyone who has any money at all. If I'm wrong, please clarify, or maybe we can take it to more appropriate thread.

^^^ I thought about it, this is pretty much my answer.

But this right here is how it gets justified. You're here acknowledging it, openly saying you know how bad it is. This assuages your guilt. But...are you selling that and giving it to people who need it? No. (I'm not saying you should, it's just a perfect example. I don't know your life of course.) and of course it probably doesn't really assuage that guilt, but it obviously does the trick for the people rich enough to actually be the people I am talking about.

And of course your gut reaction is most likely(understandably) 'hey gently caress you, you don't know what I need.' And I don't. Where is the threshold for "you have too much and now I am allowed to say horrible poo poo about you and demand you make massive sacrifice out of the good of your heart'?

This wedge is very effective in keeping us poors from storming the mansions and taking it. There's so many layers of "it's not my fault though, I'm a good person". So, so many. The line is probably somewhere underneath a hundred million dollars though. There's nobody to make that judgement call, there never could be.
