Dr Creflo A Dollar posted:Same. "A kid who smoked pot, got into petty crime, and liked to brag/posture about how tough he is" is the common teenage shithead across America. These people are just freaked out because Martin was black. It's the same racist bullshit that led to the criminalization of marijuana to begin with, really. Pot turns good white kids into shiftless stoners and makes those other people into hardened criminals that run over little girls in fast food drive-thru lanes and laugh about it. Or, in modern terms, a white kid who smokes pot is just running with a bad crowd or being rebellious. A black kid who smokes pot is obviously involved in gang activities.

If somebody I know did X, I know their reasons, so I can say they were justifiable. If it's somebody I don't know, I don't need to bother considering the reasons since it has the appearance of not affecting my rights at all. Also, the justice system should never consider their reasons, only my reasons. If you question these people on "but what if [reason]?", they are sometimes quite lenient, which is how we've wound up with "abortion is only okay if rape/incest" as the position held by much of the GOP. I honestly don't know how people even live with this thought process. Imagine you're taking a tour of a hospital on the ground floor. In one room you're shown a maternity ward with dozens of cribs, each with a newborn infant. In another room right next door is a refrigerator used to store fertilized embryos. There are hundreds in there. Conveniently, this refrigerator is on wheels and has battery backup, in an emergency it can easily be unplugged and wheeled to safety. Suddenly, fire alarms go off, this is not a drill, there's a gas leak and the building could blow at any minute. Do you run for the exit? Do you try to grab a baby or two? Or do you unplug the refrigerator and get rolling?

Then run for the nearest exit, all the while screaming "YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN!" and burning bras and bibles aplenty.

I hate when GPA is brought up in cases like these, either to defame someone or to laud them. Being good at school doesn't make someone a good person nor does being bad make them prone to being a criminal. As the finance industry has shown us, being a successful, intelligent person has no bearing on personal morality so I don't think whether Martin was a straight A student or scraped by with a D- has any importance on if he deserved to be killed.

I always bring up the same point in response to end of the world doomsaying. It's been happening every loving day since at least the time of Jesus Christ. There is a historical record of this a mile and a half long. Of course, just pointing out that the last thousand people that made these claims were wrong isn't enough to convince anyone because HEY IT'S DIFFERENT THIS TIME so you have to dig a little deeper. Why is it different? Is it perhaps because we have the benefit of hindsight with which we can contextualize the horrors of the day? Like, yeah, the Black Death and other really high body count pandemics were awful, and it's easy to see how people in the midst of that might have thought it was the end times. The same goes for the Cold War era and a lot of less obvious times. And it's not like we aren't facing serious global problems at the moment, which is a scale we simply aren't used to working in. The chances that we can make it through what we are dealing with as a species seems less certain than the chances that we made it through the ones we already have survived, but in actuality that's not so. People then felt all the uncertainty and weight that we feel now, and it was only through hope, perseverance, and blind luck that we've made it this far. To be completely fair, the world IS always ending. The world as we know it, at least. It's not quite literal, but it's a good enough approximation for government work. The truism that you can't go home again doesn't just apply to physical places, but the rosy times in our memory in which we were safe and the world was just and good. You can't return to those times, and not because humanity is somehow debased. The memories of those times are an illusion, and even when you called them home they were not what they appeared to be. So my corollary is this: if the world is always ending, and I know it sure as hell feels like it sometimes, then those moments of dissolution and chaos can also be moments of rebirth. One day ends and another begins. As I like to point out to conspiracy nuts, the Mayan calendar and notions of time were circular. In that moment when everything you know feels poised to fall, I feel like your real options become limited to two: acceptance or cussedness. I wouldn't even be here if not for a whole shitload of cussedness in the face of seemingly hopeless odds over the course of human history, so I'll leave it unsaid which I think is the correct choice.

I heard a story once of a preacher who did a sermon about the rapture and the end of the world. He was a charismatic guy and many people in his congregation were really worried and upset. Then someone saw him planting trees in his yard and the panic was over. I've heard that the most devout of Jesus's followers did not plant trees, instead they sold all their possessions and gave the money to the poor. That's a reasonable plan if you believe the end is imminent. In both cases they were wrong about the end of the world, but in only one case the belief was sincere. If someone says the world is ending and they're not living their life like it's the last day, they're trying to con you.

Better yet, go a step further and suggest that if this had not been the case, they'd probably would have grown up following a different religion- some European pagan tradition or perhaps Islam- and been just as bullheaded confident in that faith. Almost every religious person I've ever talked to seems blissfully ignorant that their religion is culturally imposed. When its come up in debate, they say they're convinced they would have 'found' their true religion (invariably the one they currently follow) somehow. There's just some kind of mental block whereby they can't fathom that if they grew up in bum-gently caress nowhere Afghanistan they probably never would have been a Jew/Catholic/etc.

Forced conversion, immigration, and outright genocide. The oft-used phrase 'kill them all and let God sort them out' is usually attributed to a general working for the Papacy during the extermination of the Cathars. The Catholic armies had captured a city filled with Cathar refugees and couldn't tell which were good Christians and which were filthy Cathar heretics; the general told them 'kill them all; God will recognize his own.' People were burned to death, eviscerated, tied to stakes and used as live target practice for archery training, women were raped to death...and that's how they treated other Christians, who had just picked the wrong 'kind' of Christianity to follow. 'Believe what we tell you to or we'll have you exterminated' doesn't sound the least bit voluntary to me.

You guys are kind of missing the best part of that. He's saying that Christians never impose their beliefs on people of other religions. However, they're perfectly within their rights to torture, oppress, and murder other Christians for not sharing their identical set of practices. So, if you're an American and you want to impose progressive views, just make sure that you pay lip service to Christianity while you do it, and then just tell Liberal Logic that you're just trying to impose a different set of practices, not beliefs. Clearly he will recognize his own logic and concede the point.
