PerrineClostermann posted:AC04 suffers from a lot of the same stuff other series transitions did. They're basically the same thing with shinier graphics and feeling a bit hollow. Armored Core 2 was like that. It was the later games in the series that really got great. Yeah I can see that, I started up AC5 almost immediately after finishing 4 and enjoyed it pretty much from the get go, haven't gotten around to finishing it yet though, seems to be one of the longer games.

You are loving pro if you can gun kill stuff often in AC4, they definitely made it easier in later games. Getting the "Beat campaign with guns only" achievement in AC6 wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

The planes being less maneuverable in AC04 didn't help either, though I had a lot more trouble with just plowing into the ground trying to make turns I shouldn't have.

I honestly didnt realise that AC04 was made in 2001, man that seems like such a long time ago now. Saying that I remember playing the original ace combat, which was called air combat in europe for some reason and then somehow the japanese version of ace combat 2. The worst thing about the first game was you had to input some sort of code at a loading screen or you had to fly every plane in some stupid white and flurescent blue colour scheme.

Honestly, it might be because I played so much 4 in my time as it was often the only disc I ever had when a AC itch came along, but I really loved it. The edge-of-map reload thing was actually really interesting on those giant maps like the Oil Refinery/Platforms missions, the Naval landing, or the big rear end Desert Storm style engagement towards the end. I took it as a challenge to see just how much of that poo poo I could kill before I ran out of time, and more often then not it took a lot of poo poo to hit the S rating. I remember at one point I actually cleared all 3 beaches on the Naval landing mission with about 40 seconds to spare before the A-10s showed up at the mission marker. I didn't really find gun combat all that difficult in AC4, the hitboxes were smaller but when you got the hang of it the planes fly the same as they do in AC5 so the targeting is basically the same. There was a lot less need to really gun many planes down though in 4, it was more about killing things as fast as possible to conserve time, which generally just meant get the missile line you needed and move on. AC5 definitely was a step forward in a lot of areas, but I love AC4 just as much in the long run. If the next copy was more like either of those then AH I'd really be ecstatic. I think in AC:AH if they could take the helicopter missions and make them feel way more open ended it'd be pretty cool, kinda like a nod to the old EA Strike games. What I hated in AC:AH is that everything felt scripted, including the DFM fights. It was just so off compared to AC4 or 5 where I can approach the mission however the hell I feel like it so long as I'm blowing things up fast enough. I'm not trolling, I just checked and you're right, you can't set it to ace. It's been a few months since I ragequit it so I couldn't remember. I set it to "elite". It's not that I'm bad at the game, I'm actually quite good at the parts where DFM isn't forced on me, but as soon as it told me "OK, you don't get to fly the plane anymore, you need to press all these buttons to make explosions happen", I decided that I wasn't going any further. That and I didn't have the patience to let it teach me the "line these arrows up then hit "E" to get behind that plane". I don't know, maybe I'm letting it get in the way of me finding parts of the game I can actually enjoy, but for now it's just going to sit in steam limbo until I decide to suck it up and play it on "normal" to learn the mechanics. e: I also played it with a keyboard because my USB controller is broken and I sold my 360 ages ago.

That's fine, let it sit in limbo however long you want. Your game, your choice. But I hope you don't expect anyone to take your opinion on whether it's good or bad seriously because you sure as poo poo don't know, which makes your continued insistence it's a bad game somewhat amusing.

I can see why people love AC4 the most if 5's characters irked them or they didn't like how cheesy Zero could get.

The voice acting in all the Ace combat games is one of the best things about them and I will brook no argument to the contrary. But seriously, anybody who thinks that there was anything wrong with the VA or story in any one AC game in particular needs a reality check - they're all universally bad. That's one of the reasons the series was loved, or so I thought. Even AH was pretty out there at times, and that was the only AC to have an actual writer. Course, I'm also of the opinion that even arguing that a particular Ace Combat game is bad is dumb in the first place - if you have a favorite that's fine, but they were all well-regarded by most and arguing that any one game was terrible and killed the franchise is stupid. Besides, anyone who doesn't acknowledge that Zero is the best is the proud owner of a wrong opinion

It's not supposed to be The Walking Dead, The Last of Us, or Bioshock Infinite. It's supposed to be goofy (the commander of Sand Island, anyone?) and it all goes to serve the tone that the individual games were going for.
