Someone did more than checking email, it is a pirated app and it is not the one that shows up on the update list. Go through the apps and get rid of anything you don't recognize.

Anyone know why windows file sharing would stop working on an Lion install? a reboot did not fix the issue, the only thing that did was turning SMB sharing off and then on again.

this is the second time we have had this issue, which results in our clients backups not running.

This happens to me as well on my work laptop, mainly when I take it home. I did some troubleshooting and I'm pretty sure it's related to how SMBX accepts connections based on DNS.

At work I have a static reservation in DHCP with an A record attached to it and SMB connections always work with it (the suffix isn't in my search path so I always use the FQDN to connect).

At home I also have a static reservation and A record in DNS but the suffix is provided by DHCP so I normally use just \\name to connect from other computers. If I connect through \\name it tends to be hit and miss and I'll often need to restart SMB as you mentioned but if I use the FQDN (\\name.domain.net) it works pretty much every time.

Of course, if you're using straight IPs this won't help at all.

My wife and I just made the switch a week or two ago. It was pretty painless, although it seemed that if the same event was shared on multiple Google Calendars, iCal threw a bit of a fit. However, all of our such things were two years old, so I just said "trust the server", and one of them got deleted, and it was all good.

Is there a well documented solution to getting bootcamp installed on a 1tb fusion drive? I tried it last night using the utility to create a 200gb partition, after hanging for three hours I killed it and used disk utility to restore the free space it took. The next attempt worked (250 gigs this time) but when I ran windows installed it said it couldn't install to that partition. I tried to format it in the installer and it still couldn't. I googled and saw that's a common problem so I tried to create the partition manually as FAT32 but that took four hours and ended up making a 650 gig windows partition somehow! I just killed it and went to bed defeated.

What the hell am I doing wrong here? I've done bootcamp tons of times on previous machines (Mac minis, MacBook pros) and never encountered issues just getting the partition going. I suspect it has something to do with the fusion but I would have thought it would have been sorted out by now.

Anyone have any suggestions for converting multiple AVI files into mp4 or m4v? I have a bunch of very old local pro wrestling shows that I converted from VHS to AVI like 15 years ago and I'd like to get them playing on my AppleTV. For example, I have:

june1-part1.avi
june1-part2.avi

june8-part1.avi
june8-part2.avi

june14-part1.avi
june14-part2.avi

I'd like to just have june1.mp4, june8.mp4, june14.mp4 so my ApplyTV listing is manageable and the shows are easier to watch.

I have like 200 shows like this and most of this stuff probably doesn't exist anywhere else at this point so I'd like to try to preserve it in a more usable format. I figure I could run them through Quicktime to merge them and then use Handbrake to get the best compression, but that's a manual and very lengthy process. I would think re-encoding them twice would also degrade the quality?

Is there some batch method that someone might be aware of? It doesn't look like Handbrake can merge files and that's my preferred method because it does such a good job and has queuing functionality.

MP4Tools will let you join and convert them. It also supports batch jobs. It's a pretty handy tool to have. The only thing it doesn't do is tag stuff. I am going to guess there's several solutions out there, but that's the one I've found that works best for me.

Be really careful, it's really touchy. I had to internet recovery my machine due to attempting to install bootcamp (plus my own stupidity). 1tb fusion drive, iMac 2012 model. Long story short, don't use Disk Utility to create the partition in 10.8.2, not sure if they fixed this in later versions. According to the Apple guy I talked to, Bootcamp installing works different if you are using a fusion drive. I had similar problems to you, doing a clean install via internet recovery gave me 10.8.3 which seemed to solve the problem. Are you using the newest system update?

Would changing the OSX version in my SystemVersion.plist file work?

That will depend entirely on how your university is determining what OS you're on. Is it through a web browser/login page? 802.1x? Some other sorcery?

Turns out I had one too many external drives plugged in (just thumb drives) and that caused it to freak out. I had just the windows USB in and did it again, worked flawlessly. I did have to reformat the boot camp drive in the installer, but that's it.

Thanks!

Is there a good Autohotkey equivalent for OS X that can do this for me? I tried Iron Hotkey but all the tutorials for it have disappeared and compiling it is a mess. GW2 doesn't support Applescript either.

Can I ask why the hate for the default mail app? I have like 7 e-mail accounts I keep track of and while there's "a lot" going on in the default mail app...there's a lot going on that I like to keep track off. Maybe it's because I"m used to outlook at work all day and that's what the default mail app is like....

Just curious. I had sparrow until I decided to mix it up (there was a specific reason...don't remember) and it seems like the default just plays better with the rest of system integration.

I use Mail.app for my personal mail and Thunderbird for my work email.

The issues I can see with Mail.app for some are the fact that you have to do some hacky poo poo to get a html signature, and I'm not sure if it's just me but every time my macbook goes to sleep, Mail.app stops working and tells me it can't connect to the server.

Mail.app annoys me because its representation of the state of my Gmail account is always slightly off. It thinks something is unread long after a reasonable window, causes messages to be marked with bullshit labels occasionally, etc.

I have a love hate relationship with Mail.app, but I still use it almost exclusively.

I am trying to use AirMail, but it's search has been awful.

One late annoyance with Mail.app is searching for a from address - it shows me a list of emails with the recipient and subject. It's frustrating. I don't know if I clicked on some option to do that or what. I'd rather see the from address in the search field, subject line, and date, so that I actually know it has found the emails I want to dig through.

Plus, if you flag an email, sometimes it will not show up in normal searches. Really bizarre behavior.

I was having a problem yesterday where none of the export options worked but I really needed to save this screen recording somehow. I found the source file named 'unsaved QuickTime movie' or something like that by just spotlighting for it. Had to copy it to a different mac to export it successfully.

Hey mac thread, I wanted to know if there was a mac equivalent of the windows program "Media box". It's a little program that does the pretty amazing task of capturing every RTMP/HTTP/HTTPS video stream that is currently playing on your computer. I've looked around but alot of them seem like those sketchy software companies that re-package open source stuff and charge you for it and it usually doesn't even work.

is there anything like this for Mac? where if, say, a RTMP mp4 video is playing in your browser, it will sniff out the URL of the mp4, and let you download it. Anything like that?
