There are a couple of Thinkpad x120's floating around in SA Mart on any given day. Generally under $450.

Nice machines but they cost that much when they were released and were slow then. The Intel ULV options were always miles ahead in CPU performance, the only thing the E series AMD chips had going for them was the graphics chip.

My mom is looking for a laptop, and doesn't like my idea of a t430. She visits her sisters a lot and wants to do lots of typing, but also watch movies on it and wants a 20" screen with 1080p, which I don't think even exists. How do I talk her into a Lenovo instead, or is the a brand I'm unaware of that would work for this? Budget of 1k.

What about focusing on 17" laptops? My guess is that it's almost impossible to see a difference in resolution from 1920x1080 to the 1366x whatever at such a small screen, even up close.

You're not going to tell the differences between 720 and 1080 while watching a movie on a 20" screen, at least not from any further back than 2-3 feet. Saeger made this 20" beast: (17" Alienware on top for reference) Dell made some 18" or 19" laptop as well.

17" laptops are pretty much all terrible. And I'm not sure what you're trying to say about resolution, but 1366x is pretty excessively bad for a 17" screen even by my standards, and I'm not one of those people who makes a big fuss about display dpi, because when you use it as a computer and not a tv, your face is going to be close to the screen.

It's a huge difference. 125+ ppi is about the point where people start to say "everything is too small", which is what 1080p on a 17" ends up being. 1366 is a comically large 92 ppi on a 17" screen. 1920x1080 @ 17" = 129.58 ppi 1366x768 @ 17" = 92.18 ppi An 11" MacBook Air @ 1366 is about the same ppi as a 17" @ 1080. 1366@768 @ 11.6" = 135 ppi For shits and giggles I looked up what VGA would be on a 14-15" monitor back in the day. 320x200 @ 13.8" = 27.34 ppi (what games like Doom ran at) 640x480 @ 13.8" = 57.97 ppi (what you probably ran Win 3.11 or 95 at)

You can count the number of options with that feature in your price range on one hand, and all will have large trade-offs in return. It's not that big a deal if you're a general user, since it's unlikely whatever you're replacing had a great screen anyway.

Even if it's higher, my budget doesn't stop at $1000 I think your price estimates are a bit low, though obviously I have nothing solid to go on. But look at the price jumps in even crappy Acers once you start putting a nicer screen in there - an aspire ultrabook with a 14" ips retails for $1400. Or the $625 Dreamcolor display in HP's pro laptops, though obviously they're 17" and 10 bit color so it's not a direct comparison. A 1080p IPS monitor at that size is going to be pretty pricey. I'd stick to my $400 guess, especially since it's going to be a high-end option and so probably won't have huge volumes plus offers the opportunity for extra profit off of less price-sensitive customers.

If you want IPS, you'll probably have to step down to a 13.3" laptop and a price of ~$1000 to have many options. I think there are a few 15" options (ivy/sandy bridge Samsung Series 9 maybe?), but I believe they're pretty expensive.

The panel itself should cost Lenovo under $100 and they're also not needing to burn one of their 1600x900 panels already included in the base price, so the issue isn't cost/margin as much as it is how much Lenovo thinks customers will pay, and my estimate on that is $300.

The screen on my T420 is utter trash and ruins what is otherwise a really good laptop. In contrast, my 2010 MacBook Pro I paid far too much for also has a 15" matte TN screen, but it's actually pretty drat good, and the viewing angles are not awful (though still not as good as IPS). I mean it comes down to the fact that you are staring at that screen every time you use the laptop, so why skimp on it? movax fucked around with this message at 23:11 on Jul 22, 2013 |

[quote="InstantInfidel" post="417710978"] Again, you will see zero real-world performance gain or loss between the two before your entire CPU is comically outdated. The reason I ask is not from a power stance but rather from a heat stance since I want the 4702 but cannot seem to find it available at any place I have located (if you know of one please let me know as I have checked Xotic, Malibi, LPC-Digital and powernotebook.com). Rather my question is will the additional wattage and heat from the 4700 be significant enough to warrant trying to find how to get a 4702?

So, the S-Series thinkpad is now showing up in the US store. No price yet. 1600x900 max resolution, 250 nits brightness (average). Yawn. http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/s-series/s431/#techspecs The 02 model i7 is about 21% more power efficient... but only when it's not running at idle, which will be about 99.99% of the time. Few if any Sandybridge/Ivybridge/Haswell CPUs will ever see 25% utilization on average unless you're doing something like BOINC or Folding@Home. So I just received my W230ST. First impressions are generally positive. The keyboard is very nice and the build quality seems solid. Its plastic, but fairly sturdy and well constructed. The screen has excellent viewing angles, as would be expected from an ips panel. The fan is quiet at idle but really loud under load, it has an annoying tendency to surge to max speed every once in a while. Built in speakers are quiet and sound tinny, they are really bad. With an ambient temp of 82F the keyboard sits at 105F when idle, under load it gets to about 120F.
