I got a new SIM card activated so I can get LTE on my new Google Edition S4, but I'm still not getting it. I'm replacing my iPhone 4 with this. Do I need to do something else to get 4G? I think my data plan says it's "iPhone Data" or something. Is that limiting me?

Last time I switched devices, they gave me a new SIM and validated that everything was working properly from a plan/data perspective in the store. It's probably worth just stopping by an AT&T store and getting things squared away.

What happens when you put the SIM card from a dumb phone into a smartphone? Does it not work at all? Can you make calls and send text but not access anything else unless you are on WiFi? My brother and I are both on AT&T and he has a dumb phone. I had a Samsung Galaxy S and I recently upgraded to a Galaxy S3. I honestly don't know why my brother has a dumb phone. He's also got an old iPod touch he carries around everywhere with him. He either connects with WiFi or uses apps that don't require internet access. I understand not wanting to pay for a data plan if you don't need it but he's on our parents' family plan and he doesn't have to pay for any of it. Our parents probably wouldn't mine paying for his smart phone plan too. I don't know what my parents are paying for their plan but now that I've read this thread, I take a quick look over their bill and see what's up.

I'm pretty sure on the nation plans (non mobile share) it provisions the 3GB plan because it's just a lot safer than the 300MB plan, especially for an auto provision where there customer might not be aware of the details.

Not only is the 300mb an incredibly bad deal but it's a huge cash cow because people can go through that in just a couple days if they're not careful, only to be charged another $15 for 300mb more of data. I would have a hard time believing that AT&T wouldn't want to cash in on that.

To be fair, the company isn't stupid, and the flip side to it is that people burn through it fast, call up and just get the overages credited anyway. Far as I can tell they prefer people on the 3GB plan because it's a guaranteed extra $10 a month. That's what they strongly encourage us to tell people to get anyway.

I looked through the rules posts to see if there was anything about unlocking phones but couldn't find anything. I'm getting an AT&T phone but will want to unlock it for use on another network. What's the right way to go about this? I'm a total idiot when it comes to phones. Thanks

Generally you need to get an unlock code from the service provider. In this case AT&T. Are you buying the phone on contract or just outright?

Just a quick note. The ability to match prices is decided on a regional level. So my region does not allow any price matching of any kind. So we can't match att.com or any of the national retailers in our area.

It has unlimited data. I have 3 other lines: my wife, my mom, and my mother-in-law. My father-in-law is insane (literally) and a few months ago broke MIL's phone. A month or two ago, crazy FIL got a phone from his brother or some crazy story that I don't care about. It was a Samsung Dart (?). She was able to use it with no problem (i.e., no auto-data plan). Actually there was a problem: it was using data, and ATT billed at pay-per-use rates. I got a credit and put a data block on her line. Then a few weeks ago, she dropped the phone in the toilet. It was ruined. Crazy FIL goes to Walmart and buys a go phone. I don't know what kind it is, but he insists it's almost the same phone as the Dart. So, they set it up. ATT adds a data plan to it because it's a smartphone. I call ATT to see what's up. They say the system sees the IMEI number, it's some Huawei phone, there is no way to turn off the data plan. The guy on the phone says he'll try to manually override it. Says it almost works, but the system rejected it. My question: is it possible to get the data plan off at all? I'm thinking no, but INSANE FIL is insisting it's possible. "It doesn't say on the box" that it requires a data plan.

Was it this phone (Huawei U8665)? I'm willing to bet that it is. If it's an Android phone, there's no chance he will be able to get it removed. You could always give AT&T a different IMEI, but the system will eventually auto-detect the [correct] IMEI and place the data plan back on.

He got the Ascend II most likely, I think that's the one selling at that price. Either way, it's a piece of poo poo phone and does require data. Basically, you should get a divorce, or murder her father. There can only be one.

I managed to get myself in a bit more trouble -- I updated the APN because that seemed to be an issue with these nexus4s, I'm using the settings from http://tysmith.me/post/36377623241/nexus4speeds but now I get no data service at all unless I'm on wifi. Is there a reference for the correct settings?

Well, for those who have been on the edge of their seat waiting to hear how my unlock goes... Apparently the phone needs to be "activated" for at least 90 days before they can unlock it. Has anyone ever heard of that? It's looking like my options are to activate it for 90 days just so I can unlock it (which would cost $30 a month, so kind of not ideal in pursuit of a free phone) or just port my number over to AT&T and activate it there and keep it there (without a contract, so pretty good.) I just want to make sure I get good AT&T coverage where I work (I remember some people saying it was bad but that was a while ago...) But before I do any of that, does this sound right? Anyone ever encounter this? I suspect it's right. Thanks.
