They were flat bottomed with poor weight distribution so they rode poorly, especially empty, like a modern gator. Not saying that the destroyers weren't even worse off (Halsey's Typhoon sank as many destroyers and killed nearly as many sailors as Bull's Run) but it's not like a modern fleet carrier, or even a contemporary fleet carrier. This is what happened when a Navy S-3 decided it wanted to get intimate with a thunderstorm. Pics via somebody on Facebook. Not sure of the date these were taken but a crew took off out of NAS Fort Worth, and the crew on apparently their own volition, decided they would fly right through a thunderstorm. They encountered 3 inch hail, severe turbulence, and the tail section was struck by lightning.    Notice one of the sidepods is missing as well, and the plane had to be helped back by ATC because I think the windshield was also cracked significantly.

Quite a few Navy jets don't have the ability to fly ILS's. Not sure if the Viking could or not. They probably used the tacan to get close to home and then a PAR to get them on the ground.

When visibility is below 1/4 NM or less, I manually vector in our helicopters back to the ship using our radar. If they aren't visual within 200 yards and there is no divert... well, that hasn't happened yet. *knock on wood*
