Talking of Four Tet (and listening too!) made me remember I've had his remix of Two Banks Of Four sitting on my HD waiting for upload for ages. It's an old one, 1999 or 2000, something like that was when the original 12" was out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HeIv8w2vAM Basic Chunnel posted:Short trax play better with the rock press Don't forget it's on 4AD too! I remember it getting spun in many a dance. Also Wiley, you can't help but like the guy even when he's acting up.

Hey guys, first I'd like to say thanks for the great thread. Here's my contribution (stolen from Coki): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfcruU23_rc Now hopefully you can help me out. I'm living in Budapest for the next year, and I want to experience the most of the UK/Europe Bass scene. The first time I heard Degenerate and Warrior Dubz way back was life-changing for me, but I've been stuck in the states until now. This is my chance to see what I've been missing, but I'm lost when it comes to the club scene itself, so I have a few questions: 1. What major events should I be looking out for? I'll be at Outlook to start. Is there any chance of FWD>> having another birthday party this august? How about DMZ next spring? Butterz (even though Cable shut down)? What am I missing? Especially in terms of events outside of the UK. 2. While not major events, what else should I definitely check out? I'm going to try for Fabriclive with Distance/Chestplate in August, but I'm not sure I can make it. Other suggestions? 3. Are there good websites which list these events? I've checked out Resident Advisor, etc., but I haven't found much. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough? Thanks a ton for the help.

Spooky and Elijah are doing a brief US tour with Shiftee and Starkey/Dev79 so if they come thru your city you better see 'em. Caught 'em in Philly on the first night (which also happened to be Spooky's US debut) and the response when he dropped Midnight Request Line was just insane.

Still being Vinyl Factory I'm shocked it didn't sell for that price originally. And some things I have been digging is the new Midland release on his new imprint Graded, especially the a-side which has a bit of a bounce in it to keep things moving, to keep it Funky. Admitingly I can take or leave the b-side, it's a bit too straight like some of his other stuff (mostly thinking of some of his Aus releases). Meanwhile the new Lone single on R&S is also amazing, raw swinging beats that are just plain groovy. Nice to see he's not just continued making Crystal Caverns v2.0 or whatever.

I must say that I really don't like much of the classic UKG or Speed Garage I've heard - it sounds synthetic and fake-soulful, like something you'd hear in an boardroom suite or a soda commercial from 97. Maybe it's because I was just coming in to consciousness of popular music at the time those genres were at their height, or because I associate chopped up swingy vocals more with Disclosure than Todd Edwards. It's not that I have anything against upbeat cheese - Grant Nelson's happy hardcore work with DJ Vibes gives me chills, but his garage singles just leave me cold. What UKG would you guys recommend to a fan of oldskool hardcore and jungle?

But seriously, you mention Speed Garage and like the Grant Nelson kinda sound (so guessing the whole Nice 'n' Ripe type thing) but I don't know if you went further, past 1998 or so wiith the 2-Step stuff. I mean the Speed Garage stuff got the basslines and well, the speed from Jungle, but it was really the 2-Step era when things started getting a bit more road. A bit more ruffer, a bit more tuffer. You get actual MCs coming in more, darker sounds, later on you also get the whole Breakbeat Garage thing rearing its head. If you haven't already try the 2-Step bit of my guide. http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3420553&pagenumber=17#post396377318 Tube-Tape Playlist Link

Also, what's "Classic UKG" to you? Like classic 4x4 stuff sounds different than classic 2-step stuff and even then theres divisions within those groups. For like classic 4x4 garage and to some extent speed garage, you might just not like it- a lot of the cheesiness/faux-soul is part of the appeal (imo anyway). Sorta like Happy Hardcore in that way actually. This song's sort of on the border for me- not say as deep as US Garage but definitely trying to ape that sound a bit and has UK vibe to it, and definitely has SOME soul to it. A lot of the appeal of this earlier 4x4 stuff, to me, is sort of the same as early house/UK acid house- making up for technical skill with pure vibes. Ends up feeling a bit artificial/plasticy but in a cool way (imo). But it all works better if you consider the US influence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnk1JwKOtmc This one's classic and all but really hits the jungle-influenced garage sound well. The bassline/dub effects are on point and I looooove the hats- sorta sounds like hard amen riffs or something. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqfIvPQ8Dgo And here's a mix from a Speed Garage DJ I caught completely by accident at some kandi hardcore rave in the burbs- it's not "classic" and it leans towards bassline but hearing the stuff mixed helps. https://soundcloud.com/djparallax/thump-a-speed-garage-adventure-mixed-blended-by-dj-parallax About 5 minutes in is a Blue Cantrell remix that like hits all the notes Speed Garage should imo but keeps it really simple. 2-Step though you can hear the jungle influence way easier. On top of the stuff 28GBB linked, if you haven't already, listen to El-B til your ears bleed (a little less 'classic ukg' but still great) and all the ghost folks/associated acts, etc. http://www.dubstepforum.com/topic55164.html is a cool mix. And for the poppier/cheesier side of it, https://soundcloud.com/benji-b/groove-chronicles-recorded is a great "classic" 2-step mix. It helped the poppy-cheesey stuff click for me with the MC and crowd noise. Also try listening outside on a sunny summer day, it makes a difference. Warning: very late 90's/ early 00s pop sounding and some of it would go off in a boardroom. Also a lot of the garage hour shows on Rinse recently have been pretty good, see if there's a DJ you like that did one. The Brackles and Scratcha ones stood out to me though they're 2-step focussed and the Tom Shorterz one was good if you like the 2:31 stuff, and more 4x4.

Groove Chronicles of course originally being Noodles AND El-B, though you could always tell the differences in production. I always go on about it but man, Stone Cold, just loving... words can't describe. No matter how many times I've heard it over the years it still sets me off. Are they official or bootleg? I don't really care personally, but some of their stock seems almost too good to be true (I thought this the last time I bought from em but the records were fine when they came in). Or maybe I just think of garage 12s as way rarer than they are or something. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33IGVcaeWs0 Here's a cool grimey UKG track (right on that turning point) I found by accident cause I was looking for the one it sampled. It's also the first track on this amazing dark garage/early grime mix by Bok Bok (tons of rad vocals on there too including R U Double F): http://guppyslim.tumblr.com/post/30676660694/ranchobumpy-blogariddims-29-69-allstars-mixed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVan0uS7Aks Heres the song I actually wanted, great classic 4x4 UKG. https://soundcloud.com/tom-shorterz/tom-shorterz-four-2-the-floor And here's a mix with that song in it by one of the 2:31 guys, retrospective and all but it's got some cool tracks and a slightly different vibe than most of the older sets playing this stuff.

Records stuff, but you never know. Wouldn't be surprised if there's some cash and under the counter DATs involved though. Qualities decent from the couple ones I have, and DnR's been about for ages. Most of the labels in the Garage days were pretty small, and things like DPR was Noodles own imprint so it's not like there's a billion and one labels and publishers trying to get a cut of something. Now it was HTFR who did all the real bootleg stuff (LaRoux Skream mix for isntance). And speaking of 24Hr Experience, here's a slightly rarer mix of Jazz From The Heart I uploaded a while back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-2WkAZz3IY Another thing I uploaded was the '96 remix of an early Grant Nelson/Nice n Ripe tune, though this one ended up on Larger Than Life sub-label. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXb3b9Gz4-U

MCing is really loving weak now. There's only a handful of new MCs that are any good. On the production side, however, there's a lot of interesting things going on, I think. Deeco, Preditah, and Faze Miyake are all relatively young in the game and pushing new sounds.

Comb Your Beard posted:I was a little confused by the Noisey article saying that Grime is undergoing a "second golden age." I don't really find that to be the case at all, what do you real grime-heads think? Well that's just you're usual press release talk. One of these days I will find the press release done by the clinically depressed, suicidal man who gives no gently caress and says it how it really is. But yeah like above, MC wise it's a bit down in the dumps if you ask me. The old guard can still bring it most of the time, but a lot of the youth don't seem too inspiring to me. I don't know if it's just a decade on these kids have grown up with it, or it's just me comparing them too much to the ones who built the scene or whatever. I know a lot of 'em have ended up into the whole UK Rap thing which is a different world really. Still on saying that about the og, even some former heavy hitters have fizzled away over the past few years. Dot Rotten being one big casualty I'd say, snapped up in the last major label post-Rolex/Tinchy/Chipmunk feeding frenzy I guess and it just plain didn't work. But instrumentally it's been cool, all you need to do is look at that recent comp Big Dada put out to see the strength of production out there. Of course that means gently caress all if you don't have the MCs to do it justice. It's been a bit strange seeing the rise of foreign MCs in Grime too. The big one lately obviously being Canadian Tre Mission who's actually just signed to Big Dada (of course I'd have liked it if they actually supported UK artists from day 1 - obv excluding Wiley - but whatever). Not really too keen and it can seem a bit off to me at times, but given the amount of defense I've had to give the UK Grime/rap thing over the years from the typical shitey talk I can't really complain too much.

In the last couple months theres been a few decent MC releases, Tre Mission, MIK, Merky Ace and P money have put out pretty decent tapes and I'm kinda excited about a bunch of 16-17 year old MCs from Lewisham. It's a big improvement over how dead 2012 was save for a few Wiley/Trim singles but its a bit of a stretch to call it a new golden age. Grime production is pretty cool right now though.
