Despite the odds on paper I don't think they're going to retake the Senate. I think the modern Republican party has a historically weak ability to generate quality candidates and that's going to poison their re-election chances yet again next cycle as it has the past few.

My point was that as far as I'm concerned saying those two are equally bad actors on the national stage with no qualifying statement is the exactly as problematic as saying "both sides are to blame" for issues we've got in government right now. You might be approaching some truth if you explain it out, but as a flat statement? No. Stacking one of them up against the other in the totality of what makes them bad people and how they've affected the nation is not a contest.

So if two people are equally terrible, you're just not allowed to say it unless you cushion it in hugs and cuddles for the rear end in a top hat who claims to be left wing?

No, Maher and Rush are both equally repugnant people, they are both racist, sexist, hateful pieces of poo poo who's fame is entirely related to the bullshit 'heh am I making you mad? GOOD :smug:' acts that are insufferable and not a replacement for actual discourse.

The big thing about Maher for me isn't what he does. He's doing the same "Politically Incorrect" act he's been doing since the 90's. That's his world view, and eh, it's the world view of a lot of Americans who make up his audience. The thing that bothers me is the fact that he has some pretty conservative views on a lot of issues but throughout the American media it's just assumed that he represents the American left. A guy who's for the death penalty, all for an American empire with some spending cuts around the edges and has never met a Muslim he didn't want to bomb is as far to the left as you're allowed to go.

My parents are big Bill Maher fans and keep asking me if I saw this or that on his show. I've tried to watch it a few times and usually turn it off when they get to the part of the show where they talk about how something has blown up in the Middle East and Maher launches into a full White Man's Burden speech about how maybe "these people" just aren't ready for civilization.

If someone on the left is equally terrible then there are probably better places to talk about it than the right wing media thread. I think we're more interested in examples of how someone is bad than equivalency arguments. If you posted clips or examples of Maher being horrible then at least that would be more entertaining than 'but guys! Don't you know Maher is bad too?!'

Mmmmm nope. Rush (almost) singlehandedly propped up the style and format of conservative radio and media that we all know and love and put his hand on the wheel of one of the two major parties in the United States. He's someone with little to no stake in policy who has an outsized influence on it and regularly bases how he uses that influence on complete nonsense that isn't even consistent with his other nonsense.

Nothing Bill Maher has done even approaches that sort of malignance in general.

I don't even disagree with what you're saying because you're talking about specific things. You're talking about their personalities and how they run their shows and discourse.

I'm saying the blanket statement of "They're both equally bad" is demonstrably wrong. Saying they're both Racist shits is not. I'm certainly willing to entertain the idea that if Bill Maher or someone else on the left had just as much influence as Rush they would be just as bad but the fact is there aren't many of those that are even remotely comparable and that fact doesn't wipe out the fact that Rush regularly dissemenates terrible bullshit to a wide audience and holds a lot of sway over the GOP.

That's only because Ron Paul convinced him. Maher would prefer a SpecWar doctrine, assassinating clerics, etc. We could do that with fewer bases.

Maher is right wing. But, he lacks the talent of Limbaugh so it's no surprise that he lacks the influence.

Rush chat!

Today he had some lady on that he was cheer leading (not sure if she was a guest or a caller) who was saying the contraception mandate in the healthcare law meant that all those religious schools would have to close and that the States would have to absorb the cost of educating those kids, thereby draining the economy, etc. Something like that.

Also, he and this same lady were comparing Anthony Weiner's issues and Weiner's wife to Bill and Hillary and saying that Hillary is defending, what's her name? Suma? Weiner's wife? Whatever. And Hillary is saying "stand by your man, ride him to political prominence, then you can have your own political career", just like Hillary. As far as I know, Hillary hasn't weighed on this dumb poo poo at all but I haven't looked it up yet.

Rush: "that's a great point!"

I wanted to call in and ask them about Mark Sanford, Newt Gingrich, the guy with the wide stance, the dude from Utah who went to gay rehab school or whatever it was (Ted Haggart?), let alone Limbaugh's stellar record of marital bliss and questionable sexual escapades.

I get why Weiner is an idiot and a laughing stock but Mark Sanford got re-elected and I don't recall Rush going into great detail about that matter. Or mentioning it at all.

I can kind of see why it's different. I mean, it would be like if Mark Sanford got re-elected, and it came out that while on the campaign trail he once again went back to South America for an illicit tryst. Weiner's deal is that it's come out that he continued sexting or whatever for a full year after he gave that incredibly humiliating press conference where he announced it was all behind him and he was deeply ashamed of what he'd done and would be turning over a new leaf.

You know who i wish was still some kind of player on the right? P.J. O'Rourke. In my right wing homeschooled upbringing PJ was a guy I could get behind, and I think my current leftism and a lot of my lifestyle is traceable back to his influence.

I sometimes have a hard time reading his poo poo nowadays because I've gone so far away form him politically, but dude is wicked funny, and despite his deep-seated distaste for leftism, he never shied away from taking some real nasty swipes at the right, especially back in the 80s. Republican party Reptile is a must read. Reagan and early Clinton era PJ was some of the best political satire ever written.

He had the advantage of the pre-Tea party right of coming form a simpler, more honest area. He empathized with the plight of the disadvantaged, even if he took a knock at them. His war correspondence is largely based around drinking with people getting bombed by America, or riding aorund in humvees with low level army grunts. For such a capitalist gently caress, he did a great job capturing the blue collar aspects of imperialism and war.

Parliament of Whores, his book about the workings of DC should be forced into the hands of every Tea Partier, because a lot of it deals with, again, the boring blue collar aspects of working in DC. The tedious paperwork, endless luncheons and functions, all the boring bullshit that actually goes on in the Government. PJ was always good at humanizing his opposition, and even if he made a nasty dig at them, it came form a much greater level of understanding and empathy than the whole of the current right wing punditry combined.

Then PJ got married and had kids and got old and he's gone a bit away form his early outrageousness and has kind of become a boring old man, but his best stuff is on the same level as HST in my sterling and unimpeachable opinion.

I remember reading Parliament of Whores, and was impressed by the fact that while he was decrying crackhouses and inner-city drug culture, he was ALSO self-reflective enough to relate an anecdote where the son of a friend of his was busted for cocaine or heroin and they were pulling out all the legal stops and of course because the kid was white and upper-class, he'd get off amazingly lightly. And he concluded the chapter with a harsh statement about how until white middle/upper class America was willing to look at its OWN drug issues and how it both feeds the druglords' profits AND generates massive disparities in punishment, we basically deserve whatever we get.

I mean, I'm FAR from in alignment with his libertarian, free market über alles ravings, but a conservative journalist who was willing to look further than THOSE INNER-CITY YOUTH WITH THEIR RAP AND CRACKHOUSES was (and is) a rare sight.

One of his more recent essays has a pretty honest and self-aware explanation of, to some, what FYGM really means:

quote:

The good things in life are remarkably expandable, but it's ordinary people who expand them. Look at China, look at India. Yes, it's upsetting that some people have so much while other people have so little. It isn't fair. But I accept this unfairness. Indeed, I treasure it. That's because I have a 13-year-old daughter And that's all I hear, "That's not fair," she says. "That's not fair! That's not fair!" And one day I snapped, and I said, "Honey, you're cute, that's not fair. Your family is pretty well off, that's not fair. You were born in America, that's not fair. Darling, you had better get down on your knees and pray that things don't start getting fair for you."

It's kind of weird to see a right winger basically admit to privilege and tell hsi kid "You are privileged as poo poo and if you love your iPhone you better pray you stay privileged."

Sometimes I think if PJ hadn't had kids he might have had a late life reconversion back to the left.

That;s the way it goes in my fanfic. SIGH

I think it's less the existence of FYGM and more the refusal to acknowledge the FYGM or that you are not an island and your present position in life has a lot more to do with the circumstance of your birth than any amount of ability or hard work that is so reprehensible. It seemed really off the deep end even for a talk radio type.

A bunch of Navy Seals were on a single helicopter which, according to Savage, means they were offered as a sacrifice to placate Muslims based on:
The helicopter they were on was a Chinook, which he believes to be made of wet paper and has a top speed of turtle.
The "military strategy of putting all your eggs in one basket" because all these seals were on the same helicopter.
The fact there was no investigation.
He believes Obama is a military hating "naked Marxist"

He's been beating this drum for a while and when he first started I remember he had veterans calling in telling him how bad a Chinook is. What Savage ignores or is simply never made aware of is that transport aircraft are usually unarmed when transporting, for example, 30 seals into a combat zone so that you can have room for the things you're trying to move.

The "Navy SEALs killed by Obama as revenge for Osama" is so deliciously crazy I don't even know where to start.

The conspiracy theory has as a starting point that the operation to kill Osama bin Laden must have been some rogue thing independently taken on in a foreign country by some elements of the military and intelligence acting completely independently, and in opposition, to the President and executive branch.
