So for DPS in nightmare dungeons I'm using an ancient AR/Shotgun build from months ago. It's still half-decent but is clearly no longer optimized after the recent patches.
What is the current top-DPS build, using say Pistol/Shotgun? My gear is mostly 10.4 with three or four 10.5 pieces.

But also means if you're like me and keep crafting mats in the bank since they take up lots of space that could be holding signet bags the amount of loading screens to go from a zone to having a ql 10.4 is completely unnecessary. Zone to agartha to London to Agartha to New York to Agartha to a zone.

Didn't Odin's ravens confirm Beaumont was Loki too?

And there's a one time escort mission (Or at least, it was the last time I tried to redo it.) where Cassandra puts a debuff on you. The text says that it's a "spell from the wicked witch of the south". Given how Morgan le Fay is usually considered to be a sorceress, it fits.

Especially since they show how blindsiding a bee'd person the way she did is pretty difficult. She completely shuts your character down until she leaves the area. Pretty much no one else in the game can do that to you.

They've definitely got the materials there if they want to go that route. Though it's mostly speculation until they can go back to that story arc.

Can anyone recommend a good weapon combo to do some early grinding with? I understand the system, at least in general, but I started out with Rifle and Shotgun and not really enjoying them (although they may get better with more skills). Don't really want to be bouncing around between several while I'm still trying to unlock more than the first few skills.

Shotguns are a solid choice early on with the hit and run passive, an aoe builder and either an aoe consumer or out for a kill(or both to handle everything kinsmouth and savage coast will throw at you). You can do all this with minimal AP/SP invested.

I have been toying around with a build that uses blade/shotty that focuses on exploiting hinders. This is a leveling build for an alt, so it won't work against nightmare QL10 mobs which are immune to hinders. I pretty much use blade torrent and clearing the path, and the shotgun consumer that auto pens on hindered targets. I b-lined for close quarters so it would always apply to close targets. Then I loaded my passives with on pen procs.

I can post a proper build when I get home if your interested.

I finally picked it up yesterday because I had a mission where the nightmare mobs were not only susceptible to hinders, but you actually had to hinder them or they dealt +50% damage to you.

Most fun combat I've had in a while, circle strafing around trying not to pull extra packs or patrols.

tldr: Everyone should rush Close Quarters and enjoy it while it lasts. Don't reach QL10 like I did and wonder what could have been.

Fun Shoe
It can be good but rushing Close Quarters is really bad advice. That's like 170 AP that could have picked up far better and generally useful abilities first. Besides, you're overwriting an 8% damage bonus which is up almost all the time against all enemies, not just those you let into melee range in the first place. Oh it also has an internal cooldown.

I always picked it up before starting to throw AP at outfit decks because it can be used to cheese the hellspawn in shadowy forest and to some extent DPS gatekeeper, but I wouldn't actually use it for soloing otherwise.

Frankenstein Dad
Jul 4, 2008

Dad of Frankenstein
I certainly wouldn't say that EVERYONE should rush to Close Quarters, but for someone who has decided to go through the quest content with a shotgun/other ranged weapon build, it's absolutely fantastic, especially if picked up early. The internal cooldown is so short that it goes away before the enemy can get back into range, provided you put a little distance between yourself and the enemy while the hinder is up, so that's moot. I use it for anything that's melee and doesn't resist hinders. Hinder resistance only becomes really common in Carpathian Fangs, so it's useful for a pretty good chunk of quest content. As for it being a big investment, I'd say that's offset by the fact that the two abilities immediately before it, Lock, Stock and Barrel, and Overpenetration, are both great AND nightmare dungeon staples. The biggest thing for me, though, is that kiting a mob around is a lot more fun than standing there and spinning at it or whatever.

It's definitely not for every build, but it's certainly got its place, which is a lot more than can be said for most elite passives.

Reverend Dr
Feb 9, 2005

Thanks Reverend

There are a lot of skills that would be pretty good, or interesting, or give different playstyles for leveling, except that they are late outer ring skills or elites with little to no use elsewhere. By the time you can rush something like that, either you have spent all of your AP for that one skill with a highly niche use, or you have progressed into parts of the game where that skill is just no longer useful.

Of course, the whole thing with nightmare mobs and nightmare dungeons that make hinders/impairs useless, when so many of the skills either apply or exploit hinder/impair is loving retarded.

As far as I can tell, there's no internal cooldown on the ability, what you're seeing is diminishing returns - when cc is applied, for the next 15 seconds any cc of the same type has a reduced duration. I think it's full duration, then half, then quarter, then immune. Once 15 seconds has passed since the first effect was applied, everything goes back to normal.

Close Quarters obviously suffers a little because of this system, but it's not as bad as you might think - it seems that a second hinder isn't applied if the previous effect is still on, so even if you're attacking every second, you still get the full 7 seconds of cc before they go immune. Also from what I can tell, even though it doesn't technically apply a new hinder when one is in effect, it still triggers passives as if it did. Maybe. I should really go to a target dummy and check properly.

Obviously you shouldn't rush for Close Quarters if you're not using shotguns, and you also shouldn't use hyperbole in forum posts. :v:

If you haven't finished the story missions in Transylvania yet, go for Issue 6 - they assume you've finished the story in their respective zones (Egypt for 6, Transylvania for 7).

So I've been raging around Kingsmouth with AR/Ele, and it's fun, but I'd like to try a melee build before I commit to one or the other.

I was looking at this: http://www.badomens.net/calculator#01.09.09.0902.0482gg004g0002.09.09.09.074g0094.09.082003.09000/b5br5l51blea68eq404n4wb24u5iboep

And thought it looked really fun. However, that's an end game build and I have no idea how to adapt it to a "first 60" type build. Is that build even still good for soloing? I just need a little help with the progression aspect. Thanks in advance.

Something like this?

Actives
1) Escalation (Chaos PBAoE builder, Frenzy)
2) Clearing the Path (Blade PBAoE consumer, 40% chance to penetrate afflicted targets)
3) Call for Eris (Chaos single target consumer)
4) Stunning Swirl (Blade elite Impair cooldown)
5) Martial Discipline (Blade bonus defence cooldown)
6) Illusion (Chaos bonus evade cooldown)
7) Surging Blades (Blade dash cooldown)

Passives
1) Intensity (Escalation weakens targets with exposed and glances less)
2) Shoot'Em Up (Frenzy attacks like Escalation place strong afflict on target, AR, expensive)
3) Sudden Return (extra damage on pens)
4) Immortal Spirit (pens give heal over time)
5) Regeneration (Martial Discipline gives heal over time)
6) Lick Your Wounds (hits give heal over time, Fist)
7) Fluid Defence (pens give damage increase, glances give damage mitigation, Elite)

That looks alright (well, not the final build)

A few things. You are most likely going to want to finish out your inner ring before starting to move deep into the outer trees. For most of the weapons the best actives are in the inner ring or are comparable to the preferred outer ring abilities. The only real exception is blood, as bloodshot is just far and away the best consumer (also bloodline + finish the movement for your builder is amazing paired with that). In doing so, you get a whole bunch of passives to play around with. Many of them are not optimal, but are certainly pretty good until you can get something else.

In general: Passives are more important to your build than actives. A good set of passives with any builder and 2 consumers is going to perform better than the best actives with poor passive choice. Also, earlier in the game the passives with red number damage are generally better than % based passives, but towards the endgame the % based passives become far better.
-Lick Your Wounds: this is great in Kingsmouth, but you will want to phase this out during Savage Coast (the second zone) as it just doesn't at all keep up with incoming damage.
-Intensity is alright, though for most all situations Breakdown is going to be better. In any case you should have one or the other as exposed is the single largest damage increase.
-Sudden Return is highly dependent on your penetration rate. With a good rate, it is going to be amazing, and it stays good even into the start of the late game NM dungeons. Though if your penetration rate is low, then its not worth it.
-Immortal Spirit, same thing as above, just check to see how often the buff is up.
-Regeneration, this is okay. Your mileage may vary with this one. Its definitely one I'd look to phase out.
-Fluid Defense is a top tier DPS passive. You can never take that off your bar, ever, and do just fine. (unless you decide to fist/blood heal)
-Surging Blades. I like this skill for certain fights, but I hardly know what you would use this for outside of those few very specific boss fights.
-Escalation, if you are running swords, just run blade torrent. (caveat: BT+Breakdown>Escalation+Intensity>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BT+nothing) Also lets you take perfect storm for your afflict (only slightly less damage than shoot 'em up)

Transition skills (Don't specifically work towards these unless noted, they are just fairly cheap and generally good)
Inner Circle:
-Weapon 10% skills, generally one of the best choices is to take this for your builder weapon.
-Gunsmoke, SH, Great for builds that apply weakness on practically every hit, which melee builds will.
-Dark Potency, blood, If you are applying afflict often, this is 150 point boost to penetration rating, which is really good up until the endgame.
-Paradigm Shift, chaos, Good to get +hit rating if you are glancing often.
-Gnosis, chaos, Decent damage passive since your targets will be weakened.
-Master of Illusion, chaos, I'd take this over Regeneration. If it doesn't mitigate more damage than regeneration will heal, then you didn't even need the defensive skill in the first place.
-Ele force, ele, Creates forced crits. A decent damage boost, though its really an late to endgame passive.
Early outer circle:
-*Twist the Knife, blade, Top tier damage passive. On nearly every bar.
-Bloodsport, fist, afflict on hit, works with any weapon and/or active
-Salt in the Wound, fist, +dmg on afflict application, which is likely to be most every one of your hits
-*Iron Maiden, blood, A top tier DPS passive. Gives 10% extra pen chance on penetrating an afflicted enemy.
-*Breakdown, chaos, Applies exposed with any chaos/blade/hammer skill and exposed is the largest damage increase in the game
-Molecular Expansion, ele, Extra damage on hit for afflicted mobs.
-*12 Gouge, shotgun, Applies debilitate on penetration. Debilitate is the single largest damage mitigation. Though this is likely unimportant until group content.
-*Lethality, AR, Top tier DPS passive. On nearly every bar. Mileage may vary while leveling if your hit rating is low (but you shouldn't be glancing).
-Turn the Tables, survivalism, A heal that is independent of heal rating. Absolutely amazing for solo at low levels. Still good into Transylvania.

Final Build.

That build is awful. (Well there are worse things, but it is most certainly not a final build or something you should be striving to get to)

Most likely that build is old. Really old. Virtually every build on the forums is like that. I don't know what you'll do with surging blades honestly; it doesn't really do damage and there isn't anything for solo play that you can use it to avoid that you can't just by moving. Art of War used to be everything all in one, but it has received multiple nerfs. Its still good, but it isn't the defining skill that it used to be, and most likely you'd be better off spending those points elsewhere (there aren't many good elites in the game).

This doesn't have a way to apply exposed as a melee build which is the most idiotic thing next to bringing no weapons. The 10% weapon damage passives are good for your builder, but bringing one for both weapons is just terrible, especially since it doesn't have any of the top tier DPS passives. Leeching Frenzy is amazing, its so good that other heal over time passives are irrelevant. From the Abyss is a really good elite passive, though it serves the same point as Fluid Defense and eventually is outscaled by Fluid Defense, its not a bad choice, but mileage may vary. Sudden Return I would still have mixed feelings, its not necessarily a bad choice, though taking it over the other top tier DPS passives is not a good idea.
