Hey dudes, this isn't exactly girl talk mashup, but I think it falls in the same general category. Bird Peterson is this guy with mad decent who is all over the electronic music spectrum. He also has a series of mixes called Drankenstein that remixes trance and (mostly) southern rap. I think it loving owns; it sounds like being supremely coked up at a Miami nightclub.

He's made four of them; all of which are free on his soundcloud. IMO the first and the third are the best: https://soundcloud.com/bird-peterson.

The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.
Listened to Bearly Legal a couple more times over the last few weeks and it's slowly growing on me. I don't think I'll ever like it as much as Bambooyah or Pandamonium, but it's definitely getting better each listen.

The thing I like most is that the base tracks are pretty unique - I find that mashup artists tend to just keep rehashing the same few samples endlessly and it shits me to tears. How many times has Work It or Izzo been sampled? Too loving many. So at least Bearly Legal is an entire mashup album with stuff I haven't heard sampled before.

Supposedly later this year, but afaik that's only based on circumstantial evidence like "he's not touring much this year", and "he's pretty overdue for one".

Something I've noticed since getting into mashups with Super Mash Bros and Girl Talk in 2010 or so is that everybody seems to use the same group of samples. I had imagined it was just due to availability.

I don't think that's necessarily true - I'd never listened to Linkin Park or Jay-Z, but absolutely loved Collision Course. Likewise for a bunch of samples on Girl Talk and White Panda mixes, I don't listen to much pop music so a lot of it isn't familiar, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy it.

Some of it has to do with what kinda acapallea/instrumental samples they can get but yeah, I know what you mean.

These days, lots of mashup artists use EDM tracks in their mashups (for example, White Panda's Bambooyah uses some famous EDM song in almost every song). Likewise, if you listen to EDM concerts, the EDM artists/DJs will commonly incorporate mashups into their sets.

Availability of instrumentals/acapellas is definitely a huge part of it. Instrumentals less so, since you can kind of piece them together in a lot of cases, but for acapellas your options are really limited. Rock Band and Guitar Hero both had their encryption cracked at some point, so multi-tracks for a lot of the songs on those soundtracks are readily available. If you've played enough of RB or GH, it's easy to recognize. So you can blame Harmonix next time you hear the isolated vocal stem of "Mr. Brightside." The Kleptones' Uptime was really bad about this.

It's not just samples, though, but the form of what they're producing. Though there's a broad spectrum of mash-up works from Plunderphonics to Girl Talk, a lot of the mash-up artists you're talking about are young dudes sticking pretty closely to the Girl Talk model. A lot of the lesser Girl Talk knock-offs adhere too strictly to a [rap vocal] + [pop instrumental] formula when it comes to their selections--so even if they're using different samples, it's in service of the same creative mode.

A lot of it's just dudes with boring taste, though. Even with all that other stuff, nobody's making them use all the same Ludacris acapellas.

tanner4105's bad apollo was the first and as far as I'm concerned only true mash up album I've ever heard, it instantly ruined me for this genre. Everything else is a bunch of pop backings with rap acapellas, what a loving waste of time. This guy put together a thousand disparate elements into an amazing 20 minute cacophony and anything less just feels lazy in comparison. Don't listen to this album.

Bad Apollo is great but I think it relies a bit heavily on pitch shifting to make some of the elements fit together better, and the resulting chipmunk voices give the tracks an almost novelty value. I agree though that a lot of releases are sounding increasingly stale as all the popular samples are repeatedly recycled, and the use of current pop music causes a mashup to lose a lot of impact for me because much of the appeal is recognition of a musical element in the track and how it interplays with another sample and it's not as entertaining if I don't know the source material in the least. Are there many mashups of people mixing their own work with existing songs? I think milkman did throw some of his own work in to his last couple of albums and they turned out really well.

It occurred to me this morning that I don't recall Monkey Farm Frankenstein having been recommended in this thread yet. So, to fix that, here's their BandCamp page, and here are Part One and Part Two of the video mix they made using their material.

Their stuff is primarily a blend of hip-hop and horror film samples, and their most well-known track is probably their Evil Dead homage, which also had a video created for it. I'm very fond of these guys, and before going by the Monkey Farm Frankenstein moniker (which was lifted from a line from Day Of The Dead) they went by the name Original Genius and did more standard mash-up material.

I'd recommend starting with the original cut of their album Twitch Of The Def Nerve, which was slightly reworked for a Some Bizzare release a couple years later. I hope people will take the time to check them out.

Nah I disagree with this. They're even better if you know the song but most of Girl Talk I hadn't heard of because it was a lot of pop tunes that I kind of checked out of listening to pop for a few years.

Weirdly enough the really good songs made me track down the originals.
