It's funny...

You were so scary at night.
I don't mind We Hate Movies, I think it's a fun podcast, but I love HDTGM. I just think Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas are funnier people, and that's what I want out of the podcast. And June is pretty much the best with the way she unpacks the themes and empathizes with characters in a really funny way...I don't seriously want them to look into the problems or the subtext of the films, I want them to do it in a funny way. And that's what they do.

Yea June's voice is annoying at times but the fact that she either A) creates this insane empathetic bond with the most worthless characters, or B) has literally no grasp of what happened in the movie (what IS a Street Fighter?!) makes her hilarious. Her doing her thing and Jason hating everybody and everything makes an amazing back and forth.

I don't see this at all. Even if you think it's true, at least they don't scream "I KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW" whenever anyone mentions something remotely weird in the movie.

I enjoy that. They have enthusiasm that's different from the "nerds snarking about bad movies" thing that's so prevalent on the internet. And as mentioned above, June is really funny and has a unique take on the movies, so her vocal quirks don't factor into it too much for me. I enjoy WHM too, I'm just saying I don't understand all the hate HDTGM gets.

June's great in that episode because she went to the bathroom, came back and thought Will Smith had superpowers.

You should feel ashamed.
This week's WHM was good even though there were only three commentators. I've never seen She's All That despite being in their age group and now I don't have to.

The Paul Walker impression, though entertaining, is not as funny as the Matthew Broderick impression. Of course, nothing can too the Wilford Brimley impressions. They need to do another Brimley movie. It's been too long since Cocoon.

Hey don't you worry about Paul Walker.

New episode was great and so was the guest host. You only need to see Not Another Teen Movie and you know every scene their referencing. Might just be nostalgia but I love that drat movie.

While it was my least favorite of the bunch, I'll still be sad to see it go. The guys really enjoyed doing it and it was always a fun listen. I don't know why they're being so SUPER SECRET SERIOUS about their reasons for quitting though... it's apparently a "personal legal issue" but they're not getting sued.

Wow, I was actually kind of getting back into YITB again recently and this is certainly a shock. Not the best bad movie podcast (I'm actually kind of embarrassed of the praise I heaped on it earlier in the thread) but they had their moments. I was kind of hoping someday I could throw $50 their way and get them to watch some horrible poo poo but now that'll never happen :argh:

Friend the podcast on Facebook, there a big discussion thread and they've posted links to the saved file. Apparently one of their jobs was at stake.

That's a pretty lousy deal, seeing as the YITB guys made a concerted effort to protect their identities. The podcast was kind of on an upswing, too, since they cleared out what felt like a year of listener requests and got back to choosing their own movies. It's always lovely when employers put their foot down on harmless personal projects.

That just sucks. Listener requests weakened the show but they made me laugh plenty in the past. My favourite moments:

-description of special effects when Goro dies in Mortal Kombat just slayed me
-live reading from a script for Showgirls
-when one of the guys describes how he had some kind of magical experience watching Polar Express in a cinema to complete bafflement of other hosts

"The White Shadow"
I listened to "Yeah It's That Bad" only as a last resort if they were doing something I had watched and had run out of podcasts to listen to that day. The way they edited out the gaps between their sentences and laughs (or even mid-sentence pauses) in post felt really unnatural and made the whole thing sound strange, like the whole podcast was being done by one of those YouTubers who uses jumpcuts twice for every sentence they speak and made the banter feel really unnatural. For the most part they also seemed to cut out the laughs that any of them had, and hearing other people laugh as a reaction to their co-host's joke helps a lot in my opinion in making a podcast more enjoyable and making me want to laugh myself. Still, it was nice having it as a backup thing to listen to, and for some reason they seemed to do reviews on movies I had actually seen more frequently than any of the other podcasts, so I'm not happy that it's gone.

Listening to a couple of YITB from my backlog, and I guess I'm glad I won't have to listen to anymore episodes where Kevin shows how completely loving horrible his taste in movies is. They all completely miss the point of Starship Troopers which is kind of infuriating to listen to. I mean, I don't want to discount personal opinions but when your criticism can be summed up with "Is it a satire? Or is it supposed to be campy on purpose?? It just makes me confused." and then proceeding to give the movie a bad score, maybe you aren't as smart as you think you are. And Kevin also admits to hating The Fifth Element, so gently caress that guy.

Anyway, I still like the show, but things like that make me not begrudge anyone for hating on them at all.

I don't think there's any real reason to hate any movie at all, so it frustrates me when those kinds of opinions are thrown around with little weight. I appreciate How Did This Get Made because it's less constant abuse being thrown at the movie and more incredulity at what the people who made the movie were thinking. It helps that it is a podcast hosted by people who actually make movies.

Now, that might be because I haven't listened to a good deal of movie review podcasts, but when I got onto yeah, it's That Bad, I was hooked. A bit of warning for NOTLP, the early episodes have a couple of members, Matt and I forget the other guy who, maybe it's just me, are super loving annoying. Thankfully they leave the show in the mid 50's or so,but they can be really grating. Once they get the main crew together, Andy, Freddy, Amy, Chiz, Kelly and Erica the show gets amazing.

NOTLP rules because of the variety of stuff they do. Besides the normal straight to video and normal horror film, my favorite episodes are when they review horror themes porn, the best being the XXX Files.

Episode 154. They have the entire crew there and it's right after they shifted the format. It used to be a 2 hour or plus show with everything crammed in, but they slimmed it down to just a Straight to DVD movie and a feature film with porn reviews and mailbag and news occurring at the end of the month. It's also super funny.

Not Head Brain of the Hobosphere

I can't believe I went this long without finding this thread. For content that isn't shameless self promotion: I started on HDTGM and love it so but some of the jibber-jabber does get to me. They seemed to have settled in to what they think people think is funny (Jason yelling, June's ridiculous interpretations) and play it up hard in the live shows.

WHM is the gold standard of bad movie podcasts. They had me completely hooked from the Halloween III episode. Jupin is my third favorite of the hosts (my order of preference is Sajdak, Szyszka, Jupin, and then Cabin, who I don't think has ever said anything funny) but he was on fire in HIII. The Rupert Murdoch bit will still pop into my head and I'll start laughing ("Wot? It kills kids? LEAVE IT ON!!").

I do think that film selection makes or breaks a bad movie podcast. A lot of bad movie podcasts seem to latch on directly to easily accessible stuff that everyone has seen.

I'll throw my hat into the ring with another goon-made bad movie podcast: Your Stupid Minds. We have a great love and affinity for bad movies, so we try to strike a balance between camp that we love (Showgirls, Death Wish 3), big blockbuster schlock (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel), and nearly unwatchable nonsense (The Hottie & the Nottie).

I would like to know what some of y'all think. I'm proud of the work we do and I'm always trying to make it better.

Yeah, It's That Bad just dropped their last episode, where they actually acknowledge and discuss the problems some people had with the show. Someone also wrote a great send-off to YITB, and the comments section explains why they had to end it: apparently, a group of fans discovered the identities of the three hosts, and went to them with the news. Joel, Martin, and Kevin basically replied (politely) with "if you reveal this information, then we'll have to end the show." The fans called their bluff, and that's why it's over.

The show's content rarely rose above PG-13 levels, so I'm guessing one of the guys simply isn't allowed to do creative projects outside of work. It wasn't my favorite movie podcast, but it's sad to know that I'll no longer have an outlet to listen to those guys.
