I never thought I'd say that. To me, it seems like this band focuses more on making good music with progressive rhythms rather than trying to be the next Meshuggah. That's not to say that it doesn't have its heavy parts, but they're not overbearing. Does this belong in the prog thread? I don't know, but it really doesn't belong in the metal thread that's for sure.

If you guys haven't checked out dredg before, I'd 100% totally recommend listening to their first two albums, Leitmotif and El Cielo. They're easily some of my favourite albums and El Cielo in particular is incredible all the way through. Leitmotif is a bit of a harder sound but is also amazing (especially for a debut). Dredg is a really interesting case. I've been following them since the El Cielo days, and I definitely agree that it and Leitmotif are incredible albums, and certainly the best work they have ever, and probably will ever do. El Cielo is a masterpiece. I also think Catch Without Arms has some really good songs, but it seems with that one that they were trying to go more mainstream, and I think a frustration with mainstream music is reflected in the lyrics. Definitely more of a pop-prog-rock sound on that one (and everything after). On The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion, though... that's when I think they really take a nosedive, particularly Gavin (the vocalist). His lyrics went from very interesting and introspective on El Cielo, to mildly interesting and sometimes excellent on CWA, to some high-school-sounding bullshit on Pariah. Backward progression at its finest. Most of the songs sound like he wrote the lyrics and then tried to jam them into the song, rather than working with the rest of the band and really meshing. The music on Pariah is some of my favorite they've done, and has some really interesting stuff going on, but Gavin just ruins the vibe entirely. The instrumental tracks are definitely the best on the album. They also seemed to try to get back to the El Cielo structure with the segue and interstitial tracks, but compared to El Cielo's "Brushtroke" tracks, Pariah's "Stamp of Origin" tracks are dismally poor. I think you could probably still make a decent album out of it by removing some of the really bad tracks, though. I couldn't even finish listening to their most recent effort, Mr. Chuckles or whatever it's called. So sad that the same band that did Leitmotif and El Cielo can produce such garbage. I think they must have stopped taking psychedelic drugs or something. Yeah, I like to rant about Dredg. They were one of my favorite bands at one time, and inspired me musically like few others, and now I am almost scared to hear anything new from them. Good thing I can still jam El Cielo and forget about the new stuff.

I'm enjoying Steve Wilson's 5.1 mix of Hawkwind's "Warrior on the Edge of Time". And its about time that Yes' "Close to the Edge" is finally getting the surround treatment. It comes out the same month I see Hawkwind on tour! The dude is on a roll...

If only he would incorporate Porcupine Tree back into his roll  It doesn't seem like he's going to bring his solo show to Australia at any point so I need PT to reform so I can actually see him live. I want to like Dredg but I have a lot of trouble tolerating their vocalist. He's just so bland in a way I immediately associate with Nickelback and similar bands. Or Christian rock.

I feel the exact same way with a handful of bands, but give this guy a little credit; his voice doesn't have loads of character, but he's also not trying to sound like a unrepentant suburban douchebag. He has been making exactly the same comments since before Grace For Drowning came out. He has also said it's inevitable that there will be more from Porcupine Tree but that one didn't seem to get reported anywhere near as much. I am looking forward to them getting back together too, but who knows how long the wait will be.

Not much of a surprise though, since DT's B-side work has usually been as good or better than his actual album material. I find Damnation kinda boring. There's a few great tracks on there (Windowpane, Hope Leaves, Closure) but the rest doesn't really do it for me. Today I finally found some King Crimson records I didn't have (Red, Beat, Three Of A Perfect Pair), so now all I'm missing is Discipline. I've only given them one listen each but they were all really good. I am gonna wait before I rank them among the albums I've listened to loads, though. Everyone says Red is one of the best things out so hopefully I end up in that camp.

Gazpacho has come up a few times in here, and after finally listening to the remastered edition of Night a few times I have a few thoughts on how it compares to the original. When Night was released in 2007 I felt it suffered from a lack of effort in the sound engineering. The drums and some of the piano parts had an unpolished dullness to them while the bass was barely there at all. The compositions were solid stuff but with over 200 audio tracks on 'Dream of Stone' things understandably got muddled up. The biggest change, and arguably the biggest improvement, is bringing in a new drummer and re-recording all the drum parts, and this time around it doesn't sound like a drum machine with an overzealous noise gate. Instead it's clear with a spacious tinge and a well-balanced stereo sound. The bass parts are also much more prominent and manages to keep everything a bit more coherent without getting in the way. A few times when needed the guitars are given a bit of extra power, but they largely chug along doing their own thing in a subdued way without disappearing completely. The vocals have had more reverb added (unfortunately a touch too much at times, I think) and a rotary effect not unlike a Leslie speaker is used sparingly with good results. Overall it's a significant improvement and stays true to the original recording.

The Proms, for those who don't know, are a season of classical music performances, and this is the first time Zappa has been performed during it. It starts at 22:15 BST (local UK time) (There is also some Nancarrow and Philip Glass being performed too!)

Drove down to Niagara Falls around noon, got to Seneca Niagara casino around 3. Grabbed a late lunch at the buffet, walked down to the Falls and back. Was with a friend and was meeting up with another TOAPP camp alum. Around 4:30 Pat (Mastelotto) and Marcus (Reuter) arrived and said hi as they walked to check-in. We went to the bar next to the venue and waited for them. Tony (Levin) showed up and hung out for a bit then they all wandered off to do soundcheck. Tony popped back out to get our names on a list as he'd left the original in his room - we all had tickets already but the Casino gave us better ones. Show was great - I really like their version of Breathless (from Fripp's solo album 'Exposure') and they did a mix of Stick Men stuff and Crimson (Industry was novel). After the show we waited for the signing session to end then headed to the burger bar around 10:15. P@ bought a round only to find his wallet was in his room so he had to run up. A lot of talk about Camp, touring, stories from the road. There was a girl playing guitar and singing covers near our table so at one point I slipped her a $5 and asked for 'In Your Eyes'. Tony didn't even twitch (admittedly he was eating a veggie burger at the time). After each song she said who the song was by and after IYE she explained it was a mix of the PG version with a couple others. I pointed to Tony and said 'yeah he knows how to plat it on bass', to which she replied 'oh cool!'. At her next break I explained who precisely the tall bald guy with the mustache *was* and she boggled a bit... They threw us out at close (1 AM). Said our farewells and hit the road home. I listened to Dream Theater daily for about a year solid when I was just getting into prog, and I'll be happy as hell if loving Jim Labrie can not gently caress over an entire album trying to hit notes he has no business hitting. They've also been the backing band on an album or two...plus, Ihsahn is the Leprous vocalist's brother-in-law. I'm a huge fan of both Leprous and Ihsahn/Emperor (who just got back together a few days ago, by the way) so more collaboration is fine with me! And yeah, he definitely has an unusual vocal style unlike that of anyone else in the black metal scene.

Has any love ever been given to The Aristocrats in this thread? A friend got me onto them recently (In turn I am now getting them into Liquid Tension). Their new album is quite good, takes a few listens though but eventually you see it's a great continuation of their debut album.
