Random Stranger posted:In fairness to DC (and obviously they don't deserve much), the 27th volume is material that they didn't have the rights to. Alan Moore wasn't going to let them reprint his story, for example. And considering volume 25 wraps up the "real" Spirit stories and volume 26 collects the daily newspaper strip, it's not like DC was doing a crappy job. Dark Horse had planned to continue their own line once they acquired the Spirit rights. They were going to reprint pretty much everything Spirit related in matching HCs but then DC decided to re-up their license for some reason and hosed up those plans.

What TPBs tend to be the biggest sellers; "catalogue" releases (by which I mean reprints of classic stories, such as Marvel Masterworks and Essentials or DC's Showcase series) or collections of more recent stories? As I've mentioned before, I've been checking out a lot of the Marvel Masterworks stuff (the re-released versions with black covers rather than the silver-bordered ones that came out ten years ago) lately and it strikes me as more than a little odd how much of it has gone out of print and how only specific books seem exceptionally difficult to find. For example, over the past three or four years, Marvel have re-released the first nine Fantastic Four Masterworks collections, but the second, fourth, fifth and sixth seem to be exceptionally difficult to find, whereas the rest are easier to track down. I might ask, while I'm here, what's a good resource for developing one's understanding of how the comic book industry works behind the scenes, in this area and others?

It's been coming out for 2 years or something, any reason to hope it'll get an OSHC release like the Parker stuff?

Has Marvel ever released (or indicated that they might release) any of Busiek's original run on Thunderbolts beyond the Justice, Like Lightning TPB? I have that one and I like it a lot, and I'm re-reading his run on Avengers at the moment and it's a lot of fun too.

I pulled the trigger on the Strangers in Paradise collection thing (which is out in 2 weeks or so). This is a 100% blind buy since I have never read SiP and the only recommendation I ever got was "put that gay poo poo down" by a LCBS owner when I asked if the series was any good. Reviews are generally favorable and I've always remembered the series as being critically acclaimed. I'm a fan of anything as long as it's not objectively awful...Did I do good or should I cancel my pre-order? 2000+ pages of comics for 70 bucks seems like an OK deal. Fake edit: Is there any way I can find what series' are going to be collected in HC editions? I'm asking mainly for the Marvel Now stuff...I've been holding back on buying Hawkeye since the 1st couple trades are being collected in a hardcover. I'm curious if I should wait for things like Gambit, FF, and Fantastic Four. I have no problem buying the paperback collections, but would way prefer to get some deluxe hardcovers.

Does anyone else have a mismatched set of Sandman TPBs (and is as bothered about it as I am)? I've been trying to put together a matching set, and I'm getting closer little by little. I've a general question for the thread; which series or particular runs on a series that haven't been collected in Marvel Omnibus/DC Absolute/etc editions a) most deserve to be and b) are you most surprised haven't been already?

My answer is always DCs Vigilante. It was a critical darling when it was being published and had one of the most talked about endings of it's time and at 50 issues it could be done in 5 volumes. But I'm not really surprised because it's taken them forever to get Hellblazer sorted out and we still don't have complete collections of Swamp Thing or Animal Man.

Annihilation and Abnett/Lannings cosmic Marvel stuff, definitely. It's mostly out of print and kind of a mess to short through chronologically. Marvel should put out a bunch of big cosmic Marvel omnibuses, I'd buy them in an instant. Also I don't know why they're dragging their feet on Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 2. Get that poo poo out already.

In relation to my previous post, I was thinking of mentioning Walt Simonson's FF and Peter David's Hulk as popular runs I was surprised they haven't collected, but on further reflection, Simonson's Thor has already been collected, they'll only just finish Byrne's own FF run this December and PAD's Hulk is loving long (I imagine it'd end up being something like four omnibuses or more if you tried to collect). Kurt Busiek's Avengers is another one, and Waid's Fantastic Four; Bendis's New Avengers and Jonathan Hickman's FF titles are getting omnibus-ized first (though I concede that both of the former runs have been collected already in TPB format, and I guess the latter sell better since they're more recent).

This is an easy one for me: Ostrander's Spectre. There is one trade that was published early on (I want to say during the first year of it) that collects the first four issues and nothing else of the spectacular five year long run that redefined the character and colored a lot of the DC universe since. It's a crime that this isn't collected. Of course, Ostrander got the short end of the stick when it comes to all of his terrific work at DC...

I finally got a "real" bookshelf and can finally post my own bookshelf porn. These books make up about 90% of my OSHC and omnibuses. I have two other shelves about the same size for my SC and manga. On top of the bookshelf is a Star Wars B-Wing from Lego. The jug is a growler from Stone Brewing Company.
